It's time to throw my PCR-800 in the trash!!!
Hi! I've finally had enough of my Edirol PCR-800 controller. After the latest Windows 10 anniversary update I cant get it to work. I've tried all the recommended guides etc here but still not working. And I cant put much more time into this. So... M-Audio Axiom 61, Arturia Keylab 61, Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol S61 or something completely different? I have to add that I mostly use Arturias softsynths. The only Native Instruments softsynth I own is Kontakt and Guitar Rig 5. But at the same time I've heard that the Arturia one have some quality issues? Anyone out there who has used them all or knows pros and cons with the different ones? /M

Ah... Minimal setup and compability with Sonar is a must.

I currently use 2 midi controllers, in the studio and when performing. They are: M-Audio Axiom Pro 61, and M-Audio Keystation 88es. I don't bother with setting up ACT for either - the Keystation has no real midi control capability, other than note triggering. The Axiom Pro 61 has all kinds of transport controls and knobs and faders and drum pads, but again, I do not bother with those, and just use them for primarily note triggering, and pitch bend and mod wheel. Both have been rock solid for me. Bob Bone

I am currently debating between the Kontrol s61, Novation SL MK2 61 and the new Nektar LX 61+ (not seen it for sale yet and does not have aftertouch as far as i can tell) I currently have a Novation SL MK2 25 that I got cheap second hand, downside is you really need to use automap, the keyboard quality is great though. I could not get it working to my satisfaction with ACT Someone on here got a Behringer Motor 49, it comes in a 61 key variant, they got working with the azslow utility

What about one of those Kontrol S-series keyboard. More developers seem to be jumping on the NKS bandwagon. I've got a PCR-500 that I have not yet tried with the new Win10 update so I'm right behind you.

I want to a dealer today to try some of them out. I had my sights set for the Arturia keylab 61 which i thought would fit my needs perfectly since I'm a Arturia guy... But man... It felt like a toy. And that white color everyone seems to love. I didn't like it at all. There was a black special edition of the 49 version that looked much better. But the keys, sliders and knobs felt everything but premium. The Native Instruments one felt far more professional. BUT the one I really enjoyed playing the most was the Akai Advance 61.. Anyone used that one with Sonar?

FWIW - My Native Instruments S-61 keyboard is VERY nice , and the integration with NKS-enabled plugins is awesome! But, to really get the most out of it, you need to be using the Native Instruments Komplete plugins or other 3rd-party NKS-enabled instruments. Non-NKS plugins will generally work as well, but you may need to spend a lot of time manually mapping them to to S-series controls, and won't (by default) have the graphical interface and browsing capability that comes with NKS-enabled plugins. S-series keyboard capability as a control surface with Sonar is very minimal, and personally I would not recommend any of the current NI S-series keyboards if your primary purpose is control surface integration. However, a basic control surface like the Presonus Faderport makes a GREAT companion for the S-series (and many other) keyboards, and having both available makes for a VERY cool integrated setup, especially if you're planning on using a lot of NKS-enabled soft synths!

This is the path I think I will end up taking, maybe with an X-touch or Korg Nano control, either that or use ableton or cubase as my main DAW. I have essentially given up on finding a midi controller to intergrate properly into Sonar on its own. Oh, you might wish to look at the Roland a-88, if you start looking at 2 part solutions

I actually got my PCR-800 working yesterday night. Not sure what made it work this time and not the last. Must have done something wrong previously. I will still look into getting a new one, but now I can dig deeper into this so I dont rush into something. Im sure the PCR will give me more headaches in the future..

Good to hear the PCR800 works. I have a PCR500 and don't use it much. Need to get it out and see if it too is working with the Anniversary update. I had to modify the Roland driver to get it working when Win 10 came out, since Roland isn't officially supporting Win 10.

Tried my PCR500. No go. I had it working originally with the hacked Win 8.1 driver. However, that won't install now. I tried reinstalling and get a notice that I have to uninstall the PCR driver first. I uninstall, reboot, and try to install and it keeps reporting I have to uninstall the driver. I've tried several other things and still won't install. Fortunately I didn't pay much for the PCR500, I bought it when Guitar Center was "blowing out" the PCR's when they were discontinued. If someone wants the PCR500, for shipping cost only, PM me.

Happy with my Kontrol S49 and Nektar P6 but I would love to get my Roland/Edirol PCR-50 (a predecessor of the PCR-500) talking to Logic Pro X in El Capitan (or Mavericks). Anyone?

Which has the better keyboard? and would you get a Kontrol s49, s61 or even a s88 if you were to buying today? Would you get a nektar p4 and a kontrol 61 instead? Since I have just upgraded my cubase to pro, I am now considering getting the Nektar, but since I have the Maschine Studio, well I might be still procrastinating over keyboards at xmas, which might be a good plan in itself.

I won't consider Roland when I do get a replacement. Roland Zapped me twice, they won't get a third chance. I had a Roland Octa-Capture. The small Headphone I/O board is bad but Roland will only sell a package of internal boards for $250, not the Headphone I/O board alone. I mentioned "Had" as it is gone. Now the Roland Edirol PCR500 will be gone since they will not support Windows 10. That rids me of Roland gear.

Wouldn't like to miss either of them. But would I prefer to go Nektar P4 and Kontrol S61 or S88? Definitely not S88, 'cause I'm not into (semi-) weighted and I do find the Kontrol S88 somewhat too "heavy" to play, handle and even look at. I do like to have all knobs and sliders evenly distributed over the top panel of a keyboard, which is why I preferred to get a Roland FA06 above an FA08. Same goes for the Kontrol S49 over the S61. The top just looks more evenly covered. (I do hope you understand what I'm trying to say here.) If NI were to add more knobs and sliders, or maybe a center screen, I might reconsider an S61. Then again, I think I would love an 88-keys Nektar P8 if ever launched. The pads would be more evenly distributed and there would be more of them, to mirror Reason's Kong drum synth. So, to conclude, the knobs on the NI Kontrol series pushed me towards an S49, but even more sliders and pads on the Nektar Panorama series would handily allow for an 88-key version. Preferably still synth-style keys, for me. Meanwhile, that P6 is pretty sweet.

I'm guessing the PCR's would (in principal) work over a midi-cable even without the driver on Win10? How much functionality would be lost if someone had a midiport over and could use that method?

After using my PCR-800 for many years as a midi keyboard and control surface, I replaced it this past week with the Behringer X-Touch on my Win10 system. Very happy with my decision. The long throw motorized faders make a huge difference for writing automation to my tracks. The rest of the board is very intuitive. The keyboard and mouse are getting used less each day. The PCR will continue to be used for my midi keyboard only. I deleted the PCR control surface and midi ins/outs when I installed the X-Touch. After reading this thread, I wanted to check if my PCR still works. I re-enabled the PCR for midi keyboard. No problem. Then I re-created the PCR control surface. Transport, faders, knobs, buttons...it all works fine on the PCR (using ACT), even with the X-Touch. In fact, I can move the faders on the PCR and the X-Touch faders respond, along with the faders in Sonar. So, the PCR-800 will work with Win10. I'm connected via usb using Roland PCR driver 1.0.1.0 dated 9/30/13. Haven't tried any newer ones. Metz, sounds like you also have yours working too. Just thought I'd throw this out there as another option to separate your midi keyboard and control surface. 8/20/16 Update: No control surface function on the PCR-800 after the Win 10 anniversary update today. Connected my PCR to my interface via midi and the PCR-800 is working fine with Sonar and X-Touch. Just can't use it as a control surface. MIDI is all I need it for now anyway.

The Anniversary update also hosed my PCR drivers.
However by turning off the Windows driver signing feature then installing the W8.1 drivers they now work like a charm. IIRC i didn't even have to hack them this time. The updated method of getting PCR drivers to work is descibed somewhere in the forum - i found the thread by Googling.
My Edirol SD20 also received the same treatment and is up and running.

I've joined the dinky controllers that can be used on iPads club. I have the 3 Novation Launchkey Mini series. My Oxygen 8 v1 still works. If I need a serious 88 keys my digital piano works. I still have the 1st Axiom 49 if necessary. I have one of those mini IK controllers that flaked but a new usb cable from the 99 cent store fixed that. I have enough. My room looks like I'm a serious keyboard guy which I'm not.

I am thinking of joining the dinky club also, I was about to buy a Native Instruments 61 key, but are now thinking that I can live without afterouch, and just get a cheapy, and like mentioned above, if I need something a more serious use a 88 key digital piano, I am going to upgrade to a Casio Privia PX-5S next year I think. I am watching for demo stock deals at a couple of online stores for a 61 key synth action, at the moment its likely to be Nektar lx61, but might go an lx88 since it has midi out on it. Either way I get to save 600+ AUD, to spend on a nice instrument library or other gear such as an xtouch. When I first purchased Sonar, my plan was to get the Akai Advance 61 or the NI 61 model, but now that I understand what they do, I would rather advoid them and get something more generic and risk proof, that way if they go the way of NI's Kore, well, I can just go spend a 100-200 and get a working replacement.

Don't throw out your PCR. I sold my 500 (only $80.00 but better than nothing) and got an Advance 49. Not much use with Sonar but I have a Mackie. You get an incredable amount of Air instruments and effects with it an even a Blackhole reverb through Sept. Can't think of anything I have it doesn't work with. I love mine. With the multi you can put together, playlists and the FX. Some people thought the keys were too stiff but not for me. I'm a guitar player and playing my PCR I could bit of pain on occasion. Not bad but small pains. Never happens with Advance. Maybe keys are a bit of a shock absorber. Only thing is I should have bought the 61.

beltrom I'm guessing the PCR's would (in principal) work over a midi-cable even without the driver on Win10? How much functionality would be lost if someone had a midiport over and could use that method?
Correct. If all you want is the basic functionality from a midi keyboard (keys, pedals, pitch, mod), you don't need to install the drivers. As long as the keyboard has AC power and a standard midi out, you're in business. ... Unlike the newer keyboards with only a USB connection, which are totally dependent on the drivers.... If the drivers don't work (or are nonexistent), then you have a doorstop with a bunch of knobs and sliders... My ancient CME uf5 keyboard has knobs, sliders, and transport controls -- none of which have worked absent working drivers... but because of the midi connection, it's still a perfectly usable keyboard with pitch and mod wheel.
