Great work guys... I'm a huge fan of JH... especially his work with Ry Cooder... my band still plays a couple "Little Village" covers...
I think Randy did an excellent job, considering JH's distinctive vocal sound/style...   big fat well done from me...

I still have a cassette of Little Village knocking around somewhere, that was good stuff.

Thanks man. I've done a couple of JH covers in the past, and took a shot at doing his gravely style and pulled it off for the most part. I wanted to do something different on this one, and Ed wanted to do this in a non-note for note style. JH's phrasing on this song is whats unique about it to me. He's got lines in the verses that have different numbers of words that previous lines, yet the meter of the song is the same. It's a cool thing about his song writing. When listening to songs like this of his, you kind of get a surprise when you're expecting one thing and get another yet it all fits. I really appreciate your comments.

Nice one guys. Don't know the tune.
I did think the kit was in the garage but the kik was in my face. Maybe If I go out in the garage that will work better..  Great work though. just nitpickin.

I thought it was good.

There was a few spots that I think could have used a euphonium. I happen to be giving lessons to a student here in Zion who plays Euphonium. He's available for any future recordings.

Mooch, that's quite possibly the nicest thing I've ever seen anyone say about music I've been involved in. Thank you.

Hey, Ed, James, and, Randy,

Excellent job on this tasty, very cool cover!

Randy's vocals are fantastic, all the instrumental performances sound great, and the mix sounds clean, wide, and perfect for the genre.  Yeah, I'm really lovin' those guitar solos, James, great playing and tone!

Nice work, boys!

You chose a very good song to cover.  JH is one of the more underrated songwriters around.  This version packs a punch and then some.  It sound radio ready, so kudos to all involved!

Excellent song! The music is great with a great sounding guitar solo. Vocals are great in the chorus but pitchy all over the place in the verses. Maybe by design? Anyway, a great effort by all.

I have never heard of John Hiiat, so I cannot say how close this is or not. It is not bad, but I found it a little loose in both the playing and vocals. Knowing the skill level of the folks innvolved, I suspect that might be coming down to the mix.

I agree with the harshness comment by you know who. The mix seems a little lowfi. I kept turning it up expecting some energy to come from it, but it got too loud before that happend.

Ed, I hope you do not think I am beating up on you. I really am not trying to. I was actually really was hoping it would be great and not have to say anything. But I would not be completely honest if I simply said "good job". You are not some fly by night smuck dropping through to fan your glory. You're Bapu. You deserve the truth.

I went and listened to a few of his seminal recordings and while the voice is vaguely familiar, none of the songs were. I am by no means the worlds expert on music, but it surprises me that I am not familiar with his work.

I grew up with that album... I might have the only copy... who knows. :-)

That song peaked at #16 in the pop charts back in the early 70s.

all the best,

Really liked the singing and that lead at the end was terrific. Not totally familiar with the tune, but as I age the less sure I am about a lot of things!

I think the issue some are hearing with the mix is the drums, which don't work sonically with the rest of the tracks. A more natural kit would improve things dramatically.

Thanks for the comments everyone. This is one of Ed's best mixes in my opinion. He just keeps getting better. I real easy guy to work with also. I've always loved working with James. He just flat always brings the goods!

This is the first thing I've been a part of in way too long, and I really appreciated the opportunity.

Thanks again guys.

Try it now James. Thanks for the observation. My parallel compression on the drums was way too high. DOH!!!
