Bruce...you remember this?  Wow!  Yeah, Ivory was one of the best purchases I ever made.  I've been working on the strings for a couple hours.  I hope they're better.  Thanks for stopping by.  :-)

JC--the remix...for you. :-)

Thanks Tom.  He makes about anything he touches sound good.

Cliff...ME?  Use big words?  Which ones?  And you remember this too?  If you heard the two back to back you'd be astounded.  :-) (not that someone else couldn't get GPO to sound amazing.  I know I couldn't at the time, and I'm not sure I could yet.)  Anyway, I broke down this summer and got EWQL when it was half off.  Still about $500, but that's about the only fun thing I did all summer.  :-)  I hope I can eventually do it justice.

New mix up 1/7/11...reworked the strings.  I'd like to know if they're better.  Thanks again guys!

All comments on the strings set aside, this piece is absolutely beautifully played and the piano sounds great!

Yes ...You ... :-).....them big words !!!...sheesh.....I actually had to go find a dictionary for that one!!!   LOL....no not really .... :-)

But yes I do remenber this tune....and no I would not be amazed if I listened to them back to back cause I know that you have improved a WHOLE lot since then and I think that this is a standing testiment of your improved skill.......and I mean that only in a positive way.......the only problem with that is that now your held to a higher standard...kind of like my last two I posted.....now I need to improve from here.....and so must you.....and you could not of done so on any better of a composition !!!

you desrve the big congrats!

Needs a cello or dbl bass to carry the lower registers. Long and slow. Then you are done. I would also suggest some room ambiance very lightly across the entire track. You can put this on a send. Just enough to get some room bounce type vibe. It's a nice piece.

Gear: A bunch of stuff.

So Scott, basically the strings still aren't doin' it for you?

Thanks Cliff.  So now we need to do a couple of really bad ones to sort of lower the bar?  Is that what you're saying?  :-)  Honestly, most of it is Ivory.  And Ron F. painstakingly helping me learn to work with midi.  He's got to be the most patient man I know.  No, wait, all those guys in the Music Creator forum (where I started) would qualify too.  Well, actually, almost everyone around here.  lol

Young55--thank you, sir. :-)

Herb, whateryou laughin' about??!!

Middleman, that's a good idea about more bass throughout the piece.  I'm not sure I know how to add room ambience.  Wanna take a stab at explaining that one?

I really have no nits with the arrangement at all at this point. The production is excellent to my ears. If you consider this piece finished, then so do I. I stand by my original comments and this re-listen simply confirms that I really enjoy it, including the "revamped" strings. And I have to say for having recently heard the original, that you've got some real good samples to work with. Again, bravo to the both of you.

Re:Josh's Song 2011/01/09 00:05:14 (permalink)
Janet, first create a new buss (not track) put the Sonitus reverb fx plugin in the fx bin of that buss. Name it Room Verb then expand that buss and make sure it outputs to your main stereo buss.

Now create another buss. Name it PreMain Buss. Expand it and point the output to output to your main stereo buss as well.

Now expand all of your music tracks and change their output to the PreMain buss instead of your stereo main buss.

Now expand the PreMain buss, right click and chose the "create an insert" and choose the Room Verb buss.

What you have now is a parallel room buss with some reverb on it. Go into the Sonitus reverb on this buss and play with the different room sounds, for this piece I would select mellow reverb.

Go back into the Premain buss and look down at the bottom of the expanded buss. You should see the Room Verb insert with a volume control. Back this way down so that just a little bit of the music is colored with reverb. From here you can play with some different settings in the reverb to get a nice room sound for your piece. You don't want too much just enough so you hear it, then back it off some more. It needs to be hinted at, but not heard.

The idea is to create a performance hall or room experience where all the instruments seem to be in the same space.

Thanks JC.  I certainly do appreciate your ears and your confidence in me (and everyone else around here) and your encouragement!  :-)

M.Man, thanks for that.  I'll see if I can work through that when I'm at my DAW next.  I'm wondering if that would be that much different than the reverb bus I have everything going through now.  Perhaps I just need to change the type of reverb.  Anyway, I'll try it.  Thanks!

Yeah, Steve, it kills me that he rarely plays.  It's always a pleasure listening when he does.  I really hope I can pin him down some day to record several songs.

Thanks John. :-)

Thanks, Phil.  Maybe I'll have him read this thread and see if that will get him to play more. :-)

Thanks Phil.  I appreciate that. :-)

So Scott, basically the strings still aren't doin' it for you?

You had plenty of comments on the strings without me adding any. They didn't do it for many, but I was only listening to the tune, the piano and the quality of the composition.

New mix sounds awesome... Again, I would consider what's been done here "seed corn?" I would plant it? And grow it "substantially..." But I'm known for big productions... I hear a "big production" here... I would not be happy with this. It's good? It could be great...

As evidenced by the song, you both have talent.  Either by gift or acquire, you both exhibit talent.

As to the song....well, yeah, it is very nice.  But, I am not the critical ear in this situation - you are.   So, any commentary I might provide would be moot.
Are you happy, does it emote the feelings you want?   If not, leave it alone for a week and come back to it.

In any case, as a mother of two myself, having a track or a song from your son is a precious and time-encapsulated commodity (I still have their kindergarten drawings *sigh*).  And in your case... he just happens to be very good at it.

Good luck

Yes Janet it will be different than what you have now...eseetially what he is explaining to you is how to send both a dry and a wet signal to the master buss.......It gives the illusion that ALL THE INSTRUMENTS ARE IN THE SAME SPACE........it is a very nice technique.....

it is also the same kind of technique used on Parallel compression.......

Yeah, Robby, I know you're into big productions.  And you're SO good at it!  I never even thought about it actually.  I was just trying to get his work as good as I could.  But if you'd like to add more to it, I'd love to hear it. :-)

Katie--so true...to have a recording of his song is priceless to me.  I still have a dream of doing a CD of his songs if I can ever get him at a time when he feels inspired. :-)

Thanks Cliff.  I will definitely try it and see if I can figure it out.  I thought that if all the instruments are going to the same reverb bus and you set the sends at different levels, then that makes them in the same room, but farther and closer from the 'audience.'  As always, though, I realize there's more to learn. :-)

Janet,
This is a great piano piece.  Your son is very talented.

Sorry to say I'm not a fan of the string sound.  I do like the string part just not the sound.  The vibrato is distracting to me.

Anyway, I agree . . . give the kid a hug.  He'll pick up music again.  Hopefully it will be soon.

I like this mix better and the strings blend better. I don't particularly care for the train horn at 1:24. That could go away without disturbing the dynamics.
