Josh's Song - new mix 1/10

My oldest son, Josh, played this extemporaneously one night after helping me get my new DAW set up, about 1 1/2 years ago.  I was just perusing my SC site choosing songs to re-do and I wondered if I could get this to sound any better now with my newer toys.  Well, lo and behold, even I can hear the difference Ivory and EWQL and a few tips from Ron F. make. :-)  I'm curious to hear how it translates, though.  He played the strings all at once, so I wasn't quite sure how to mix them in, etc.  And even though it's better, I'm sure it can be even better-er. That's what I'm going for.  And if you hang on till the end, you might be able to tell that he was transitioning into another song.  I cut the rest of it off, but thought the way it is works.  If it doesn't, please let me know.  Thanks, guys!

Josh's Song

OK, you all twisted my arm enough that I went in and reworked the string section.  I hope it's better. Thanks everyone.  He actually when I told him how much everyone loves it. :-)

It's dark, I like it. You could never write this, because there's nothing dark about you. You are the anti-dark. I would do more than just the big string section, I would layer in "an orchestra..." And it needs words, and a singer :-) I wouldn't "stop" the strings abruptly where they stop, but rather fade them out. And the end cuts off.

Pretty though, I liked it very much.

Yeah, I know I could do those strings better.  Or differently anyway.  Not sure how much more I want to do with it right now, but I appreciate the ideas for sure.  I'll check out the ending. Thanks!

    That's nice, Janet.
Also it's the first song I played on my new computer. These pc speakers su.... don't sound good.
I'll listen to it again later when I push it through my stereo.

Performance is the first thing that comes my mind when hearing this. The tone
is great and it fits the performance. That to me is the ultimate in the end result.

    Hi Janet,

The piano sounds MUCH better.  The strings don't sound very real.  I think they are in too much of the piece.  IF they waft in and out and kind of creep up nice and lushly the piece will breath a bit more ....all my wobbly opinion so have salt on hand.

Beautiful !!!  Great composition  !!! The strings need to be more plush... not enough softness to the starts and stops of them..they are well positioned though.. I love this !!! You have a wonderful talent Janet.. I will be diving in to your long list of tunes you have posted for sure :-)

The piano sounds beautiful,  As stated above the strings do seem to stop & start abruptly & the
    end could use a   f a d e     o    u    t.
Well written & performed though.  Very pretty!

    Hey Janet,

This number puts you squarely in the George Winston(Autumnal) part of the prairie: short melodic phrases played (and improvised upon) on top of rolling arpeggios, all with a soft pianistic touch and laid back timing. Pleasing and warm sounding piano. I like the string part- it adds some harmonic/tonal interest to the piece.

    Very good.

Thanks, Chuck.  Yeah, I'll work on those strings.  I appreciate the ears. :-)

Thank you Bert!  That's funny...I think he has all of George Winston's CD's and I'm sure George is his favorite pianists.  He'll be tickled that you hear the resemblance.

You sure have been putting out some pretty stuff!!  This is a terrific arrangement to this and I get more of a malencoly than a dark vibe from this.  I am just getting into midi, so I can't comment about strings and stuff --  but It all sounds good to me.

Very nice song.  I agree that the ending is a bit abrupt, but that's all I can find that I would change.  Your son is very talented, as are you.  I just got X1, and there are some very nice string sounds in there that would do this song justice.  Way to go.

Thanks Freddy.  I'm glad you think I've been putting out some pretty stuff.  I try.  This happens to be my son playing. The one that rarely plays the piano anymore. :(

Thanks so much Lynn.  Hey, you're not far from me. Whadaya know!  :-)  Yeah, he segued into another song and it didn't really fit, so I cut it off.  Maybe I should really have him come and fix some of it.  Or do it myself.  EW has some great string sounds too.  I've just gotta work with this one some more to do them justice.  Thanks again!

This is AWESOME!  You should be very proud!

WOW! He just sits down and starts playing and all the sudden he makes me feel bad for not knowing what I'm doing and everything I have posted!!

I'm only kidding Janet, with the exception of the being Proud part! You should be!

Somebody should add some words and vox to this, my suggestion would be Julibee!

Oh BTW: The mixing was great also, not that I know how to do that yet!

Well Ed, maybe I'll do something about it after all.  Got a lot of work to do in the next couple of days, so it won't be right away.

Thanks, Bobby.  Yeah, he's good.  And probably not just because I taught him the first 7 years.  lol

I finally did a good one, huh, Herb?  Maybe I should just record him from now on.  In fact, I'd like to, but he's a very busy new daddy right now. :-)

You already know my thoughts on this piece, but I do feel the need to publicly state:

    "JC"
A musical family eh! Well, it's excellent contemplative/meditative new-age-y music. What strikes me is the multitude of musical themes that could be developed further within that piece. Your son has a great musical imagination and he can play. It really does captivate and I like the energy, the "improvised" vibe.
