The biggest advantage for touch screen for me is being able to fly across the project page, using swipe, pinch zoom, etc.

I love doing PRV editing using my left hand to swipe across the project to where I want to edit, and my right hand on the mouse to do typical click edit the events.

I also agree that screen placement is key.  You definitely want it placed like a console.

This stuff is the future, no doubt about it.  But its utility for me is borderline today.  I just upgraded my studio system.  I have a 25" non-touch and a 27"  multitouch.  I have them both on VESA mounts, so I can change the placement.  However, after experimenting, I just left them in a vertical plane side by side.  That's because most of me time on this system is with Finale right now, and that doesn't support any touch.

I definitely agree that this placement is really awkward and tiring for touch use.  But I probably won't change mine until we get an upgrade that is a lot more touch-friendly.  I'm not complaining.  I think Cakewalk has been doing exactly what they should be doing in stabilizing the product.  The last big wave of productivity came from the UI design (flexible layout, prochannel, etc).  The next be wave in productivity will come through touch.

Now if Finale can get to the point of allowing me to scribble my notation with a stylus, we'll really have something.

I think it would be nice to have a touch toolbar for working in Track View. A bit like the Raven, have buttons you click to tell Sonar what you want to do.

That sounds like pre-X Sonar !  Will touch bring back what some people feel they lost ?

I have been considering adding a 22" touch monitor, laid out like a console underneath a vertical monitor.  The plan is to set the resolution to 1600x900 and use it for the console/transport view exclusively.

Will a 22" monitor at 1600x900 have enough resolution/ control of the console?  When a second monitor is sized to this resolution, the console fits perfectly and it looks as if there is enough spacing for touch to work well.

I know that everyone is going to large format monitors, but my feeling is that a smaller monitor set to a lower resolution may work better because everything touchable will be closer and more ergonomic.  Also, the vertical monitor behind it will still be at arms length, not pushed too far away.

Opinions?

I like real mixing desks with motorized faders, but, given the times, I assume a vertical monitor for the main DAW functions and a horizontal monitor for a console will be my next solution.

I think I would want a fairly large horizontal monitor, but would have to play around a bit with some cardboard mock-ups.

I just went with a 23" touch screen in front of my 27" main monitor. I was running windows 7 for a long time and the touch was flaky. Last week, I moved up to 8.1 and the touch works great. I sold my Mackie Control Universal Pro last (I'm shipping it out today) if that tells you what I think about the touch control panel! :)

What resolution are you running the 23"?

I've got the Acer T232HL running at 1920x1080. That happens to be the max resolution, but even if it wasn't I don't think I'd want to run it higher as that would make some things like tapping Solo buttons more difficult.

Some people speculated that the 22/23" size at 1920x1080 is a bit small to operate some of the smaller controls.  Do you think it would be much better with a 27" monitor?   Or is going to a lower resolution to make everything bigger going to work better?

Re: Just picked up a Touchscreen Monitor to Use with X3- My Initial Thoughts 2014/11/04 16:06:31 (permalink)
Well, realize that <most> monitors are going to run 1920x1080, which is HD. There are exceptions, but they are expensive and I don't think they support touch. For example, my primary monitor is a Dell 27" and it goes to something over 2400+x1900+. So, a 27" touch will probably be 1920x1080 - the same as the 23". That means everything WILL be bigger. If the resolution stays the same, you get  bigger stuff with a bigger monitor. If you move up to a higher resolution as you move up to a bigger monitor, that is not the case.

I will add that OF COURSE it will be better on a 27" touch monitor. :) However, I find it usable on a 23". Only you can really judge that.

If you can swing the cost for the 27" touch, I'd say go for it...

Hope this helps.
