Khyber Pass-New Version 3/13
Old version: http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=10067307 Edit 3/13: The 2/15 version of this had significant clipping, and a few other things that I felt I needed to clean up. I inserted a limiter in the master bus, and lo and behold, the mix sounded like absolute poo. I spent the better part of today playing with levels, EQ, reverb, and compression to get the whole thing to settle down. I think I have arrived at a good place, but let me know what you all think. New version 3/13/11 http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=10285834 For anybody interested, here is a breakdown of what is involved in this project: Bohdran, Tabla: Sample Tank Violin, Cello: Dim Pro More Cello, Bass: Studio Instruments Strings Tambourine: Dim Pro Chimes: Sample Tank Hammered Dulcimer: Dim Pro EQ: Sonitus, Nyquist Reverb: GlaceVerb Limiter:Boost 11 Project done in Sonar Home Studio 6XL

Many of you? I believe I suggested it? And others "agreed" This is better... It seems much better in fact. I would bring that drum up a bit in the mix? This is excellent, it builds tension... This version is much better. However, you still need to look at perhaps a break? Or a bridge? That includes maybe some arpeggios? Or chords vs the continued hammers throughout the song (JMO) But you took the last one? And it's better :-) So maybe I'm on to something?

Must have missed this first time round so can't comment in comparative terms, but you've certainly done a good job with this. Only on my lappy, so can't really listen properly, but it seems to translate well. The drums could maybe come up smidge. I fancy a curry now for some reason ;)

You're definitely on to something here! I really liked your first version but this is much stronger. Those low strings parts are very cool, too.

Robby, I'm kind of fight EQ/levels to bring the drum back up right now. Still working it. As for the other ideas, I'm trying lots of different things. We'll see what happens. Paulo, funny, I've had a taste for curry sing I started this Thanks. Cliff, so do I. Still runnin' with it. Thanks. Greg, thanks. If you are getting the visual images, I'm moving in the right direction. Geeare1, Yeah, I'm likin' this. Probably the most fun I've had for a while. I have to work on some timing issues, but I'm really happy with the cello part. Thanks. Mark, totally agree. I've tried to stay with the synths from a concept point, but this could really use a propper fiddle player. Thanks.

This one really took off! The cello sounds great in there and adds a lot. I agree that a digeridoo and some light finger bells would fit in nicely. I also agree that the drums could come up a hair. Keep up the great work!

Sorry Bub, the didgeredoo is just the wrong part of the world. Cool sound, but 'll be using it for this. Glad you like it so far, though. kieth, Nat Geo, eh? Wouldn't that be cool! Finger bells...hmmm. Radio, no weed here, just barley pop. Glad you like the percussion. Scotty, Yeah, the cello is a driving force, but the tabla seemed to enhance some timing issues, especially in the second wave. I'm still working on that. If you have any ideas on violin/fiddle, I'm all ears. From the very inception of this project, I thought of you. Thanks for checking it out.

I wish I knew what a tabla is. But whatever is going on, I like it. Definitely soundtrack material...lots of movement and tension. The cello adds so much...makes it sounds menacing or something. I love the dynamics on the strings at 3:30 on. I think I would have been tempted to end with a humongous climax. But it all depends on what the director wants, of course. :-) GREAT stuff!! This DOES sound fun to work on. I can't imagine how you did it, but I love it.

Ask, and ye shall receive: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tabla This is the prominent percussion sound you hear. I used the one from Sample Tank. It is mapped so you can play right/left hand parts nicely on the keyboard. On this particular track, I really thrashed the Edirol. My fingers hurt, and it almost fell of the stand, but I had fun. I agree on the huge climax...still working on that. This is a different direction for me, and a fairly exotic blend of instruments. Changes seem to suggest themselves as it develops, and I haven't had this much fun with a project for a while.

Oh, I guess I could have gone to the google to find out myself. lol Looks sorta like a djembe. Don't thrash your Edirol. You might need it again some day. Especially if you continue to have this much fun with it! :-) I totally understand about changes suggesting themselves. That's how most of my songs come together. Sorta fun discovering what happens. :-)

lol. The Edirol hasn't let me down yet. I think it can take anything I can throw at it. I'm trying all kinds of stuff with this. Balalaika, bazouki, mandolin, more strings, etc. Something is going to stick. This is turning into one of the busiest mixes I have ever tackled. If I can keep it together, I think it will really shine. I hope so, anyway.

agape, thanks for checking this out. Yeah, possibly a bit more on the bass/cello. I think the drums are pretty much where I want them. They are hand drums after all. Janet, Yes, I did, and it was really challenging to stay focused. lol. I usually clip that Master Bus extension off, but I forgot this time. As far as what's new, it's mostly strings. Bass and cello. I think it plumped up the piece, and added some texture and richness to the weave. If I pushed it a bit more, it might descend into cacaphony. As it is, it's just chaotic enough, and is pretty much what I had envisioned. I added a new intro, since it seemed to me that the original dulcimer start was a bit abrupt. And I'm really happy with the new ending. Sort of an afterglow, after all of that energy, and it just kind of settles. I brought the tablas up a notch, because they were a little washed out in spots before. And the tambourine was tamed some. This one's been a bit of a journey, radically different from anything I have done before, and definitely the busiest mix I have tried.

Overall I think the original better. The sound quality of the new version is not as good, it sounds very quiet and a lot of stuff is getting lost in the background. The string intro is nice but it looses direction (sorry) :( It's easy to overwork a piece. (I know 'cos I have done so my self sooo many times)! The overall level of the original seems to be more dynamic and even and the imaging is better. I think all you needed to do with the original was add the string intro, put a break in somewhere (like rockinrobby suggested) and add a little bit more interest during the ending (which seems to start at around 4:00). The string phrasing between 3:00 and 3:30 is a bit repetitive (and a bit loud in places). Sounds like you and I should collaborate because I love ambient stuff like this.

Phil, James, thanks, glad you liked this. MemphisJo, thanks for the note, and I'm inclined to agree with much of what you wrote. I realized this morning that I had muted a doubled track on the cello that kind of knocked the wind out of it. That's why it is sitting so far right. Yes, this version is quieter. I reduced the levels because I was seeing lots of clipping, but I think I might bring it back up, and use a limiter. I'm still looking at that violin around 3:30. I'm not entirely happy with it either. I'd love to get into another collab, but I must warn you that I don't work very fast, and so might be frustrating to work with. have you checked out any of my other tunes? Cypress Drift, Celebration, and Strolling with the Reaper are probably more in my comfort zone. Thanks again.
