Komplete 10 First Impressions

So I couldn't wait for a price break on Komplete 10 and I bought it :). I'm breaking into all the inner workings right now. Posted an article about first impressions. I know many of you have owned Komplete for awhile now. I've had Kontakt for awhile now. Komplete expands on that in a big way.You can see the same technology behind most of it. Some of the things like "the finger" haven't been very practicle for me yet. I'm impressed with all that even the Basic Komplete 10 offers. Now I want Komplete Ultimate. Not that Komplete isn't enough . GAS? Yeah.

Of note, Kontour and Rounds are both in a group all by themselves. Kontour is a very nice sounding synth with control automation built intro three seperate channel feeds. This is wonderful for those big pads that change and morph...the controllers are ok. I'm not really looking at one yet but maybe later. Rounds is like a combination of different synths in one and once again is killer on any kind of a sound landscape. The three new pianos are all welcome additions . I especially like Maverick.I plinked a little on it the other day and recorded it.
Installation is still very long and drawn out even for the basic version.130gb is a lot of material!

If you don't have Komplete yet and want some insight you can of course go to the NI website and I provide some of my first impressions on it here.

For those of use that only have a few bits of komplete, eg, guitar rig, is it worth the massive investment for the komplete suite or better to pick and choose pieces?

If more than a couple of Komplete pieces interest you, it's a far better buy to get the package rather than choosing items à la carte.  Especially if you already have something like Kontakt or Reaktor and are eligible for the crossgrade -- you can see for sure about that by logging into the NI site and checking your pricing for K10.

Karyn,

I would answer this by saying that it depends on what you already have, and what you are looking to add. If you don't already have Kontakt, I'd say Komplete is definitely worth it as you get Kontakt, plus several good Kontakt libraries to get you started. But if all you use a synths like Massive, or already have the latest version of Kontakt, it would be a lot harder to justify, IMO, unless there are additional pieces you were planning to buy anyway.

Just to add, I have Komplete 8 (not Ultimate), and really don't plan to make the jump to 10.

Regards,
Dan

I would say that even if you already own a couple of the elements, Komplete is still worth it. Especially if you go for Ultimate and get it on sale (which I did with 8, then upgraded to 9 Ultimate). I don't know what the total full retail price of everything would be but it's high. Even if you have say Massive and FM, there's still the full versions of Kontakt and Reaktor, which are HUGE programs (and don't forget that having the full Reaktor grants you access to the full Reaktor User library and thus 1000's of unique synths, effects, drum machines etc).

Even forgetting about the big standalone synths, there are synths which run in Reaktor like Skanner, Monark and Razor, all of which are awesome (not sure which come with Ultimate though). And the libraries are worth the price of Komplete in themselves. Not to mention the extra effects you get for Guitar Rig, and the vintage compressors and EQ's you get with Ultimate. I really don't know where I'd be without it. Like Waves bundles, you get a HUGE bang for your buck (especially if like me you got them on sale).

I'll upgrade to 10 when they have a blowout.

If you don't own Kontakt, then I'd say absolutely - for the "entry level" Komplete that is.  Whether or not you'd want to spend the really big bucks for Komplete Ultimate (or whatever it's called) is another matter.  I am perfectly happy with the entry level bundle (Komplete 8 in my case) and don't have the slightest urge to cough up a big wad of cash to get the high-end bundle.

Guitarhacker, get in on one the upgrade sales when they come. There's a large leap from 6 to current. It's over 20 more items just on the basic Komplete.

I just bought Komplete Ultimate 10 - full version and I'll sell my Komplete Ultimate 9, full version, clear serial number. I bought the new NI keyboard and got a package deal with KU 10 full. I'll sell my KU 9 full version for $450 and you can get the upgrade and still be ahead a couple hundred if you're interested. gblaptop@gmail.com. I can document the clear serial with a copy of the release from NI.

Yeah, the best deal is to wait till next summer and buy Komplete Ultimate 10 on sale right before Komplete 11 comes out. I've been one year behind on NI stuff for years, and it's saved me $$$

That's a fantastic price to get Ultimate 10!!!! (that's about the upgrade price for me from K9)
Karyn, since you're buying the the full version outright, you can sell all your other Komplete items seperately and try to make some of that money back......so it might be even a nicer deal for you.

He's selling (I'm buying) his old version 9, not 10. Though I guess I could use it to instantly upgrade to 10.

The only NI product I have that I could sell are GuitarRig 4 Pro, which I'm guessing is to old now to be worth anything anyway.  (It can't be used as a cross-grade into Komplete, for example).

Re: Komplete 10 First Impressions 2014/10/14 09:49:43 (permalink)
Karyn I got my start with a few NI products I had purchased separate. I had Kontakt,Guitar Rig  and a few others.First I crossgraded Kontakt to the newest versions a few times. Initially I didn't think I needed or wanted Komplete. A false assumption on my part was to think that it was primarily geared for electronic artists. While this is partially true..there's so much more and you can use those techno/electronic things at times. I tend to make prog rock sounding things and those current electronic instruments fit in there just fine.

I think my crossgrades helped me out some in buying Komplete. The deal to outright buy Komplete isn't really a bad one when you consider all that it has in it. I think an upgrade to Komplete 10 Ultimate will run me something like 399.00 in US currency( correct me if I'm wrong).....I held off temporarily because I'm getting a new computer soon and my $$ is going there for now :) I did get a 25.00 voucher from NI when I bought Komplete 10. Hmmm...that's still around 375.00.Quite a lot for an addition to an already existing program.

I think I'll end up with K10 ultimate eventually. I don't particularly want to load twice onto another computer as it is now. I still like my hardware keyboard as a midi out and a sound source...so for me I'm not entirely sold on the idea of that controller yet. I mean...I can still select sounds with my computer. Maybe at some point in the future I'll spring for one as a side thing but probably not my main player. In the plug-in that controls Komplete offers midi learn then you can use almost anything to control it. It might take a few seconds longer to do but I'm ok with that right now.

Eventhough GuitarRig 4 Pro is an older version, there's always a buyer around the corner at KVR who's looking to get a deal. You could use that $$ for more GAS!!!

Do your upgrade at sale times! They do 50% at least twice a year. Skipping a version is probably the best/economical way and even then doing it towards the very end before yet another comes out is best. It's rare that you actually need what's in the latest version.

I just got the K10U upgrade on Friday, despite UPS best efforts to thwart my pleasure.i honestly would prefer to support my local music shop-but I was afraid there would be a price hike after the preorder date expired so I jumped the gun.  Smooth installation, no issues experienced (yet) with integration with Sonar X3(64).

Yes It should come all on a hard drive...makes it much easier. One benefit of Ultimate I suppose. A usb drive right? Have any of you ever experienced any issues with the included hard drive?

enclosed 2.5" usb3 hdd in a nice brown Native Instruments marked case, with a unique connector and matching usb cable- should not cause any issues unless your usb power supply is insufficient to power the enclosure, then I gather you have to mess about a bit. It took about 3 or 4 hours to install everything with my usb2 interface. Ive read some posts elsewhere with corrupt files that where rectified with files downloaded from NI- unfortunately there are a number of posts concerning unnecessary delays with customer service- so that is one thing you might want to be aware of.

What it means, at least to me, is that you'll probably find little need to get on an annual upgrade cycle.  Since I first bought Komplete (before there even was a Komplete Unlitmate), I found myself skipping every odd-numbered releases - not enough there to justify an upgrade.  Now, it's pretty much come down to this: if there's a new version of Kontakt, I'll buy the upgrade.  If not, I'll wait until the next release.  So, it's been two skipped releases for me this time around.

Thanks for sharing that info arachnaut.

I see a trend for NI to discontinue certain products over time. All companies  do this to some extent as this is a symptom of product cycles. Still it's sad to see all of the ommissions and discontinuations over time.

I tend not to think of earlier versions...I'm only looking at whats new. A condition of GAS I think :) There is quite a large difference in size between K10 and K10 Ultimate with ultimate being over 400gb in size.....You get the larger horns/sax section and Alicias Keys...more orchestral and movie themed sounds. They both have Kontour and Rounds the two most recent synths. I guess it boils down to the kind of music you like to make. It feels good to have all of something and this is the feeling I think NI wants you to have :)

Depending on the success of the new controllers I can see improved versions of those in another year or two...maybe one with a built in audio interface. NI have been known to stop supporting hardware. If they make a new controller in two years will they still support repairs on the now new but then old ones? I guess this is always a chance you take with anything new.

One thing about the article that I hope doesn't turn out to be true....I don't ever want Komplete to be the only synth sampler I have. I guess it could be for someone, but I'm not ready to lean on them to that point. There's too many other good products out there including hardware synths. A huge well organized arsenal it is, but if they're hoping it's all I ever use they will be sorely disappointed. I'm a little on the stubborn side I guess :)
