Mario,

Best option you recommend, off site storage on hard disc. I have multiple backups, but all here within the house structure. When the big one hits, likely all copies will go down. Tsunami plan is to save my cigar box with all the backups, a laptop and a couple guitars on the way out to higher ground.

Being a cheap SOB, I've thought about sending a HD to relatives thousands of miles away and even burying a HD somewhere with multiple levels of moisture and environment proof safeguards. Some vegetable level of mechanic background, so could pull this off easy. Safe deposit box easier to update obviously. My dirt level ignorance is about not trusting a Cloud thing.

Not wanting to derail this thread, but was wondering how many of us have lost software due to either the company going down, or sick immoral fees to download what you have already bought...(you listening IK...nobody is a fan of your policy on this issue)

My question is who has lost what. I've taken the hit many times. Can jump up and down and complain, but the the company even if it still exists has me by the chalumbas, and in any case doesn't give a flyin' fork about my protest.

Interested in hearing first hand testimonials, like Bit. What did you lose. Reason is that strength is in numbers, and there may be someone who has the file to get you back up and running. Not saying any piracy or illegal stuff, just someone who lost something and someone else who can share the files you already paid for.

bitfilpper, I always have two HD backups, one here and one in my bank's safe deposit box.  You may want to consider this option.

Excellent idea, Mario. My bank's too far away, though, and I am lazy to boot.

I did learn my lesson, though. My backup drive is no longer left connected to the computer overnight. I plug it in just long enough to do backups (both individual folders and Acronis), then it's disconnected and stashed in a safe in the house. When I went out of town for 3 weeks I left it with my granddaughter for safekeeping. I also back up the most critical things (mostly day job stuff) onto a laptop, which is likewise never left unattended in the office/studio.

Oh, yeah, I'm backed up in triplicate. But I'm still maintaining that old shoe box as a backup backup.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Re: Kontakt updated to 5.7.0 2017/10/05 17:11:03 (permalink)
I've held off on this update since seeing the problem reports on this forum and other places three weeks ago. I was hoping to hear something about an update that wouldn't delete my NI DLLs.

(1) I've been using Service Center, which I thought replaced Native Access. Do I need to start over and download Native Access and start using that instead?

(2) When I installed Komplete, I had the installer put the DLLs into C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Vstplugins. Is this configuration going to cause the deletion problem mentioned earlier in this thread? (I don't move DLLs manually.)

Thanks.
Mitch I.

I never install anything into a specific product's VST folder(s). By default, Komplete installs the 64-bit instrument VSTs into:

C:\Program Files\Native Instruments\VSTPlugins 64 bit

I just add that folder to the plugin scan list. I also use two folders exclusively for all 3rd party plugins.

For VST2: C:\Program Files\VSTPlugIns

For VST3: C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3

Note that, by default, Komplete installs its FX plugins into the VST2 folder you specify.

I have never had any issues with plugins being mysteriously deleted. I do have to clean up after AAS product installs, though. They just LOVE to install the AAS Player and instrument VSTs in multiple locations.

I found the answer to my first question from NI. They now recommend Native Access.

But I'm still wondering about question (2), whether the location of my DLLs will cause the deletion problem.

No DLLs are being deleted. They're just going into an unexpected place. Let NA install where it wants to, follow the advice of that Arizonian alien above, and you'll be fine.

Found the secret to Native Access.  In preferences you can set all file paths.  So in theory, if you let this thing do all updates, installs, etc. you should have everything put where you expect.

I just did a little housecleaning with the recent updates, and after a fresh NI install, this house is in order!

This is only tangentially related, but the previous post reminded me that I'd long ago moved all Kontakt-related data files off the c: drive, and decided to have a look and make sure they're all gone. They weren't.

There were a bunch of leftover installation files there in hidden folders under \users\all users. Not huge files, but irritating when installers don't cleanup after themselves. To locate them, open a DOS window and type in Dir \users\all users\Kontakt* /s

Not only in the users folder. I still use a registry cleaner though probably not needed in this day and age. Kontakt leaves literally thousands of dead end entries. Love Kontakt, but the uninstall routine is among the worst out there.

Goes back to the principle that the developer has to put as much quality time into the uninstall as in install, and they don't get paid for us to uninstall a program. If they can abort the executible file and a couple other in your face pieces of residue, they are content to leaving a vast debris field of junk all over the place.
