LOOPER for LIVE GIGS - Suggestions?

We play Live electro/house gigs in clubs. So far weve been using some equipment.
- Yamaha DX-200 (drum + fm7 synth engine + bass)
- Korg ESMK2 Sampler (drum sampler, and some loops)
2 Keyboards
Mic
a simple Radio
Virtualizer

we plan on doing some more live-sampling but dont want to use any notebooks.
What we are looking at is eg. :
BOSS RC20 XL
DIGITECH JAMMAN
others?

what would be the best choice?

CD player or minidisk? Record tracks ahead of the gig. Minidisk is better because you can rearrange the tracks without re-recording them.

thanks, but prerecord tracks on CD/Mini Disk is not what i would consider "live-sampling" ;-)

    Planist....totally off topic but...

I listened to about the first half of your songs and I really like what I heard. Really nice vibe and arrangements. Sound quality is quite good as well. I remember particularly liking "Me And All Four". Nice work on the tunes and the mixes man!

Band I did some live sound for used the RC20 extensively - Great little box, never a problem.
    Never used the Digitech
Depending on what you want, you might look at the Line 6 DL4
This is a delay that also does looping - 14 seconds? - might be more versatile than a dedicated box, but you don't get the loop time of the Boss

    Steve,

thank you for the advise. for our purposes the 14 seconds of the DL6 is a little small. but if you had good experiences with the boss i will look at it and test it next week in the store nearby.

Isn't that exactly the sort of thing that Ableton Live! is made for?

I know it is not a Cakewalk product, but I've heard that for live work, throwing loops
or wav onto your workspace during a gig, it all links up, syncs up, you can trigger
with whatever box, and now you can use midi in addition to loops.
    Never tried Live! myself.

Point is, you can use Sonar to create, and something like Live! to recombine your
stuff in different arrangements, play along with it, doing extra verses, etc.

But who knows what Sonar 5 will have ...

i will try live 3 for that..thanks for reminding me that i bought it once and never really used it only thought that its gaplessness is great

but 403 is almost the way i want sonar to work, and let see what s5 brings

I second RC-20, DL4 has nice functionality, but 14 seconds can be limiting. The Kaoss pad does some cool stuff with samples, but only holds 12 seconds. The Boomerang seems to be perfect for this, but I've never used one myself.

I believe that the Electrix Repeater is still the best one around and it is now back under production. It can do 4 tracks and can store 99 loops and you are only limited by the size of the CF card. It is 16bit and quite impressive. See www.electrixpro.com

Depends on whether you want to loop material you're playing live, or whether you want to trigger one-shots recorded before the gig, or both...

The Boss is great for the one-shot stuff (holds several pre-recorded tracks in EEPROM) but is unwieldy for recording and playing back live loops IMO. The electrix is fantastic from all I've heard, but is pricey and has a bit of a learning curve.

I've been using the RiffBox for looping as I play. My experience is somewhat limited, but so far I like it because it's dead simple. It's claim to fame is that it can automatically align your loops with peaks in the audio input, which keeps timing pretty clean. Check it out at:

I’ve been looking around for this, and I haven’t been satisfied. I have the Boss RC-20. I use it for a live solo guitar/vocal deal. It’s limitation is this: I can use my feet to record loop 1 and loop it. But to get the next loop going, I must bend down, hit a save button, deal with the fact that loop 1 stops playback, switch a selector knob to next memory slot, and proceed as above.

The Boomerang has 2 slots, A and B. The user can do the above with feet only.

The Gibson product has plenty of slots, but goes for around $1K.

Ableton Live – I haven’t seen anyone come up with a straightforward way to use this with midi or other pedals. If I’m wrong, though, someone please direct me.

I'd like to be able to create loops on the fly to the backing parts to the 3 or 4 sections found in songs I like. So when I get to section 2 of a song for first time, I'd like to be able to, with my feet, begin the recording of loop 2, while stopping any playback or recording of loop 1. And so on.

Does anyone think this is a goal that won't be possible in the near future?

mpc1000, either the new one or the old skool one. barring that, you can get a s1000 or even a s2000 for cheap these days, and plug a keyboard or drumpad into it.

Jerry, good thoughts about live looping! ;)

what i am thinking about is using the JAMMAN (Digitech) (like RC20 but has a card slot) in connection wich some one MIDI sending groovebox (Yahama DX200)
    - prepare some loops before going onstage load them into the JAmman (with specific lenght/bpm)

BUT what is when i record some loops into the JAmman onstage and want to improvise a little in connection with a drumgroovebox that mustnot stop playback (think about House.Music in a club).. is this possible?

    what i am missing/thinking is
    - a LoopBox with MIDI IN, it would recognize the bpm and/or the start of the loops of the drum machine
    - different loops to be loadable/playable at on time

Apologies for being vague... but someone posted, either here or on the Project 5 forum, a video from a guy who performs solo beatbox/vocal type stuff using nothing but a mic, Live, and a MIDI footpedal. He seemed to have some pretty sophisticated and intentional layering happening. He mentioned at one point that part of his solution was a little software component that converted MIDI messages into keystroke combinations. I want to say it was called "MIDIFinger" but that is at least half a guess. If no one here chimes in, cross-post to the P5 guys and I bet they can tell you what this software was, or at least who that performer was. Maybe Live is your solution after all?

I had to see what you are talking about so I hunted down the thread.

Is the JAMMAN new? It seems to have the RC-20 beat hands-down, although some kind of MIDI implementation with it would be interesting. Compact flash and USB connectivity are very nice. I need to play with one of these.

Not cheap, but another interesting option for sampling and live performance is the Roland SPD-S.

Yep, that's the one. And apparently the software I was referring to is the not-so-imaginitively-named "MIDI Translator".
