Took another listen, section 2 if you like (1:10 ish),
the Strat (I assume the Strat) is very ethereal.
Mind revealing the signal chain on that?

T

It's not a strat. The third guitar and the wah guitar are strats. The one playing the melody is a hollowbody. It's actually a sample library from OrangeTree. The guitar coming out of the library was lightly compressed and EQ'd, with a little bit of spring reverb. In Sonar, I used the Waves SSL to get the sound I wanted, then used sends to two delay lines. One delay is very short and fast, almost like a slapback. The second delay is much slower, with more feedback. I automated the second send so that longer notes echoed. That's it. Nothing more than that.

Dan

very nice, Dan!  love the piano intro and love the whole soundscape you've created here.

I do agree with Tom above, tho, that the piano sounds pretty "heavy-velocity" wise and I read your answer  and understand your response, but just wanted to mention that it did sound pretty even and hard velocity to me - I guess I would have preferred a little more dynamics in it.  but that's just my preference - which, if you add $5 you can get a coffee at Buckstars...

Thanks for the listen Reece! Totally understand your point. I've modified the intro with a field recording that, I think, makes the piano sit better now that there is some context for it.

I love the idea of ambient sounds at the beginning.  But, somehow the fidelity took a hit.  You still get an A though.

Thanks! I'm guessing you mean in the intro itself? Beyond that, this version is identical in all aspects.

Wow!  Excellent arrangement, great mixing, very professional sounding.
I like the reverb/delay, it adds a lot to the song....not too much, just the right amount.
Great job!   I can't think of anything I would change.

Really nice, Dan.   And a bit different for you, I think.   Like others I got a bit of that Hornsby vibe which comes across really well in both the piano and arrangement.   Mix sounds clear and punchy too.   Yeah, I could use a bit more piano "wood" and less "string" during the intro but that's a nit all things considered.

Thanks Dave! I use mostly stereo instruments and decide while mixing where to place them. If they don't need to be wide, I'll use something like Channel Tools to narrow the width and place it where I want it. Some tracks will get treated with delay or other widening techniques to place them on the edges. A lot of it is just plain old judicious panning (how boring).
