Last song for the year.
To say this has been a busy year musically would be an understatement. I set out on Jan 1 with a goal to write 26 new songs this year. I did achieve that goal and even went past it a bit. I did not post then all here. I'd have written many more but I hit a slump in the late spring that lasted a few months. Between work and family I didn't have the time to write much. I have no numeric goals for 2012. Just the goal to write better songs. So with all that behind me, and a higher post count here than I started 2011 with, (still well behind Bapu... bless his heart) I present to you, my last song for this year. I started working on this in the spring, and remixed it and changed a few things around recently. What Child Is This >>> http://www.soundclick.com...84&songID=11253066 I played all the parts except the fiddle. Acoustic guitar(live), mandolin(live), and the dulcimer is a 3rd party Kontakt sample, bass is upright sample. Enjoy it in the spirit of the Holidays.

oh nice, just noticed this after your comment, good coincidence! Great example of different styles arranging the same song, so many influences and talent brought out in the same melody. Great job, Fiddle and mandolin add a great vibe!

By the way, I like that goal of writing/recording 26 songs... It just may influence me to try the same thing! It would be a great "song diary" (and exercise) to look back on. Thanks.

PCJ.... I set that goal based on one song every 2 weeks. Some weeks I wrote more and some not at all. And it wasn't just a "hit the quantity", it was write something creative. I kept track with a spreadsheet log. Writing this way also at times forced me to write to meet that goal. Writing for the sake of writing. Thanks for the compliments on the song.

This is really nice, Herb. I'm not sick of Christmas music yet this year. In fact, I haven't even gotten all the way thru my Christmas playlist yet. And haven't even listened to MY Christmas CD yet. Anyway, very nice. And congrats on reaching your goal.

No kidding about so many good tunes. I've heard so many on the radio and haven't even enjoyed all my own tunes (well not tunes I made, but tunes I've bought) yet. It seems like every year I think I'm gonna do tons of new Christmas music and rework lots of the old classics. Then comes January and I don't feel like it any more. And then this year I got a musicians' magazine and they boast 17 new Christmas albums this year. And that's just a small slice of them, I'm sure. Seems like everyone else has the same idea... lol So, I doubt if I'll do any more till maybe December of next year, if then.

Lovely, herb. This has a really nice blend of textures. It has an almost Ukranian flavor to it. One small nit. The dulcimer is too clean. This sounds like a hammered dulcimer, but there are no bounced notes. You are bound to get a few here and there. It would be virtually impossible to play an Appalachian dulcimer in this manner. I like the sound, but the execution doesn't feel quite right. Your guitar and mando parts are very nice, as is the violin. All in all, I really like this.

Robert, yeah,,,, the whole thing is the ducimer was played on the piano keyboard with K4 and some samples. I actually was just messing with this and that started the idea for this tune..... but I agree, the ducimer isn't played like a real one would be played.....

One of my favorite Christmas songs? Evidenced by the fact that I did a version of it! We should get everyone who's had a take on this, and put it out as an album? And call it, who's children are these!!?? :-) I liked it. And the dulcimer was a nice touch. And I hear you playing your mandolin :-D It's a fun instrument. Merry Christmas Herb!

The first thing that struck me was how fantstic the mix and production sounded: crystal clear and very pro-sounding. Excellent arrangement and the playing is perection to my ears. Can't find fault at all with this. Top notch work all-round herb.

BOTR: Yeah, I've been listening to all the holiday music and you've had some good ones this year. And I agree, the Mandolin is such a cool and fun instrument to play. I'm glad I bought it. Guitarpima: Thanks. I really do enjoy the acoustic stuff as well as the full band sounding things. Acoustic takes me back to where I started from. Blipp: Kind words. Thank you.

very nice rendition, Herb. Love the blend of instruments. I think I would suggest (and I'm sure you won't change it now) that the tempo would increase a little after the first stanza or so. but it's all good! nicely done!

Severedvesper, geeare1, Beagle, Venus: Thanks all for listening. B&V thanks for the observations on improving the song.... I will consider those things, for now, it's done and I'm really not planning to even turn on the DAW the rest of the year.... Time to take a few weeks rest from the busy schedule I have had writing and recording this year. I wrote and recorded over 31 songs this year, not counting a few non-song short cues. Less than 6 of those were covers, so that was a whole lotta writing of original stuff.
