I always loved the attitude of the "solo" in Nice n' sleazy by the Stranglers - it comes in here at about 1.30 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYqllpnyWrY

+1 for this and possibly anything by Dave Greenfield - the guy's a (seriously underrated) genius.

Among my favourites are the solos in Straighten Out and Walk On By

Steve

Hi Steve

Yes have to agree about him being a seriously underrated genius. As a keyboard player myself, and being more interested in Punk than Prog, he has definitely been one of my heroes. As you say, "Straighten out" and "Walk on by" are fantastic as well, and I still love the solos on "5 minutes" and "No more Heroes".

I've not bought any of their albums since Hugh left, but I have heard good things about their new one, so might have to take a risk and see what it is like.

Riding The Scree - Genesis, Lamb Lies Down. But then, anything Banks did was unique - all the more so when you consider that his only synth during that period was an ARP Pro Soloist - a preset little bugger with very little in the way of control.

He didn't have the Prophet 5 then? Also, wasn't he one of the 'lucky' ones to have the dual-manual Prophet 10?

I have one of those. It is gigantic. It weighs about as much as a volkswagen.

You are definitely a collector of the old stuff. Please tell us you don't have a New England Digital Synclavier (anybody know what happened to FZ's old one?), a Fairlight CMI, or a the big Yamaha GX.

Andy

I gave up after La Folie myself Andy - I think they lost the plot a bit, they certainly lost the edge that the earlier stuff had in spades.

I saw them at the Malvern Winter Gardens in '78 (at the tender age of 15 or 16) when they were touring Black And White and they were just amazing - I know they were happy to ride along the punk wave but these guys were seriously tight and very good musicians. Incidentally, the support band were The Skids - as the room wasn't that full I managed to get quite close to Stuart Adamson and was mesmerized by his guitar work - his untimely death was a sad loss to music.

As to the stuff they've done after Hugh left, I found About Time at a car boot sale for 50p and I also bought Norfolk Coast on the strength of the reviews. The latter is a very good record but with both albums, all the songs sound like the Jean Jaques Burnel songs on the earlier stuff; the songs and the albums in general would really benefit from Cornwell's influence.

I also bought Fire And Water [Ecoutez Vos Murs) on spec, an album by Greenfield and JJB which was on offer at HMV or somewhere for £2.99 or so - what a waste of £2.99!! On the other hand, if you come across Hugh's solo album Hi-Fi that is worth getting - just his voice and the signature Telecaster make it a delight to listen to.

Without doubt, Rattus Norvegicus is in my top 10 favourites of all time - probably top 5 if the truth be told

Steve

Can we extend it to keyboards in general? Absolutely gobsmacking solo by Jools Holland on a track by The The, Uncertain Smile. (starts at 3:25). From what I heard, recorded in one take. Incredible.

If you include Hammond organs, that opens a whole new vista of notable performances. Booker T Jones, Steve Winwood, Keith Emerson, Jon Lord, Rod Argent, Felix Cavaliere, Rick Wakeman, Rick Wright, Al Kooper.

Favorite Hammond solos:

Mathew Fisher, Whiter Shade of Pale
Felix Cavaliere, Good Lovin'
Dave Greenslade, several tunes by Colosseum
Alan Price, House of the Rising Sun (OK, that might have been a Vox Continental)
Al Kooper, Like a Rolling Stone

Some would claim the B3 is not a synthesizer, a point of view I happen to disagree with.

EDIT: Forgot the grandmother of B3 virtuosity, Ethel Smith. Look her up on YouTube.

Wow, everyone's been quoting many of my favourites:

Lucky Man
Cinema Show
Firth of Fifth
Riding the Scree
And You And I

If we were talking about favourite piano solo's, I think Emerson wins hands down

Trilogy
Take A Pebble

In my mind, although I loved an awful lot of Wakeman's stuff, KE was a much more accomplished pianist.

Not to forget "Piano Concerto No. 1" from Works Vol. 1, though I'm not sure it would qualify as a "solo"

BTW, Emerson does numerous awesome synth solos all over Brain Salad Surgery.

Son of my father - Chicory Tip - Way ahead of the game

Wow. That fired a synapse that's been dormant for many years. Here's the version that I remember.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KSLfhx_10M

I couldn't have been older than 12 or 13. The synths and the flanging on the drums just amazed me.

Around the same time I discovered Tomita, when his 'Snowflakes are Dancing - The Newest Sound of Debussy" came out. I think our town's "teen" AM radio station played his version of "Arabesque #1" exactly once, and I was there to hear it.

And here it is!

Not a solo per se: Pete Townshend's terrific synth work and orchestration on Quadrophenia.

Edited for spelling.
