Legendary Synth Solos

Some of my favorites..

I love Brian Eno in Editions of You

Totally unmelodical. Then again, it is on a VCS 3.

Or the synth intro into Hawkwind's Silver Machine. Wait that is a VCS 3 or an AKS there. I cant get a good view but watching the guy turn the knowbs, it has to be an AKS. Otherwise it would look like battleship.

OR What do you want from Life - the Tubes. (sorry the video is cheesy on that one). Gotta wait on the solo here - worth the wait.

I think they are using a 2600 on that one - you can hear the spring reverb.

Frankenstein - Edgar Winters - another classic.

I prefer the sounds of synths that sound like synths - not the ones that sound like violins or pianos.

You? I already know there are gonna be Wakeman and Emerson fans galore. Hey diversity is the spice of life.

    Wow...

Blast from the past. I had forgotten that I had an Ultravox phase when I was kid in my late teens early 20's. I wore the same hair style, the pointy sideburns and even at times the thin mustache. I had the baggy pastel sky blue pirate shirt and the pants with the double belts.

Man, what a great time the early 80's were. Men cleaned up, we were allowed to have a sense of fashion and style and colors were not burnt orange, brown, and depressing like the seventies.

Its funny I was just thinking about them the other day while wondering what old music I had on tapes that should be replaced with CD.

    Cheers
    Shad

I read that was pure serendipity. Emerson was doodling in another studio while Lake was working on the song. Lake heard the synth bit, liked it and threw it on even though Lucky Man was already a finished mix. One of the most recognizable and copied synth leads was just an impromptu doodle.

I like the clavioline solo in Del Shannon's "Runaway". For years I thought it was a Farfisa, turns out it was a one-of-a-kind custom synth.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I second that one. Brilliant writing, I think he did most of it on an Arp pro soloist...which by the way was just offered as a VSTi, very inexpensive and very true sounding. I just got the demo.

    Lee Michaels, Stormy Monday

I saw Lee in 1969 at Selland Arena in Fresno, CA. Truly an experience - I was only 16 at the time, I was truly mezmorized.

If you don't know about Lee Michaels, this is the music of two people - absolutely unbelieveable - it was Lee Michaels with Frosty on Drums.

Frosty died two or three years ago, last time I heard, Lee was living in Madera, CA, about twenty miles from Fresno, where I live.

    One of a kind.

    Frankenstein is an ARP 2600.
    Lucky Man is a Moog.

The dead give away is the cheesy reverb in the 2600. The Greys had something like too little signal being sent to the springs and too much amplification post, if i recall. I have a grey. The reverb is part of the characteristic sound. Not a good reverb, but a very memorable sound.

Fresno/Bakersfield - which one is better? Been to both. Fresno only once. Bakersfield more times than I care to remember. And I was neither pickin nor grinnin

Well, if my math is right, I was born in 1953 - yep, I was sixteen.

If you've been to Bakersfield once, you've been there more times than you need to.

Yea, Fresno has a bad rap - but it's home.

Even, if it's not a synth solo, I would add the intro of Firth of Fifth.

"Selling England by The Pound" is in my top 10 album of all time.

Quite similar in some ways to Mr Eno's version on the Roxy track

He didn't have the Prophet 5 then? Also, wasn't he one of the 'lucky' ones to have the dual-manual Prophet 10?

Heavens no - "Lamb" was circa 73-74, the first Prophets didn't hit the streets 'tll.... 78? 79?

And yeah - he did have a P10 at some point, don't know how long that lasted, not the best piece of hardware ever made....
