I sure wish that would have been it.  Sorry I don't have any more ideas - guess it's something they will hopefully address.

Have you tried using something called jbridge?  It seems to be some sort of program that manges using 32-bit plugins in 64-bit Sonar, and 64-bit plugins in 32-bit Sonar (and other hosts).

I think they have some sort of demo/trial version - wonder if that would assist.

Yup, I swear by Jbridge for *some" 32 bit plugs....Bitbridge for others. Its a real trial and error process to work out what works with some and not others. This whole thoughtset brings down the crashes to less than usual but I'm afraid they still happen....

Its a real mystery why SONARDPR.exe does this for some and not others.

Some people think its M-Audio drivers but it isnt, it happens to others as well.

Its a mystery and the Bakers dont acknowledge the problem at all. Like I say, I have been barking on about this problem for ages.

Thanks, cecllius2.  I will stop suggesting making that change to folks who are experiencing the hanging Sonar issue.

Even the Cakewalk tech guy said he was not sure, just that it seemed reasonable to try, as there are some flaky driver things out there.

Unfortunately for me, I think your post may have gotten me promoted to the 'gives crappy suggestions' list that one of the other posters has.  My apologies to that person - I shall strive to redeem myself someday in his eyes. :)

I'll beat a dead horse although Cakewalk will just turn a deaf ear like years past, and some forum members will come sweeping in to blame everything but Sonar.

This issue is obnoxious, period. Cakewalk once said this was "as intended" and tried to blame drivers of hardware when I submitted this as a bug - I find it hilarious that it occurs with Roland hardware. Even if some hardware companies do write poor drivers that make this situation more likely to occur- sitting on your snobby high horse while your users put up with frustration is an obnoxious solution - way to go Cakewalk with another serving of our way or the highway. Sonar is the only DAW that I have ever seen hang like this with no way to kill it, while literally every other DAW I have tried can at least be process terminated.

The right technical answer is to work around this and NOT sit waiting indefinitely - put a timeout in your code like every other sane application on the planet.

Sadly it seems that Cakewalk has become very rigid about certain things in the last few years and has lost some of their ability to be nimble and versatile. I suppose that is the price of progress.

Does anyone else have a motu interface that can confirm that this is not an issue? I went looking today and I almost ordered one but I had a bad feeling related to a thought that this might not solve this problem.

Just to be clear.  It may not just be M-Audio drivers, but for me on my two machines the difference is M-Audio vs. MOTU.  Both are firewire and both are using TI chipset Firewire ports (which is the preferred ports).  I vaguely recall that a couple of years ago there were a lot of users on this forum complaining about the problem with this hang up, and I vaguely recall that most or at least many of them were using M-Audio devices; however, I also vaguely recall that there were some other brand audio devices that also had this issue with Sonar and device hang.  When I switched from M-Audio to MOTU my issue with the device hanging went away.

One more observation--a number of users back "then" were also complaining about Sonar hanging related to midi drivers.  There was some discussion about it being USB midi devices that were causing the hang.

If some one is having this issue, they should try to eliminate any culprits by removing them one by one and seeing if that device is the one that is causing the hang.

To the guy asking about MOTU, all I can say is that on my I7 2600k machine (see my specs below) that my MOTU 828mk3 hybrid has been solid as a rock.  The only issue I have had is if I leave my DAW on for a couple of days, and make the mistake of putting it to sleep, that sometimes I have to turn off and turn back on the MOTU. This however never happens in a regular use of my DAW within an average session of several hours use.  BTW, there is a thread that is fairly recent about MOTU 828mk3 here on this forum; the consensus was that it is solid.  I will try to find it and add it to this note. [[On EDIT: FOr the guy asking about MOTU, here is the link to that thread about MOTU : http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=2678166 ]

Again, this is just my 2cents, my experience.

To all concerned....

you may be looking for a monster where the problem is a peanut.

I've been a sonar user since  version 3 and this has been a long standing issue

involving the show midi input in the taskbar preference.

turn it off and see if it helps.

just a thought.

Thanks for your help cecelius2, This Motu is on my standby to buy list. If it was in a store and I was standing by it, I probably buy it. I heard saw in the other thread that a user doesn't think the pres are that good. I was using the pre on the eureka presonus strip, but when I went directly in the focusrite, I actually liked it better. I've yet to use a very high quality pre. anyway i'm getting off topic. Thanks again.

OldTimerNewComer that didn't work for me. I have a project that I'm doing and this project faithfully keeps bitbridge running after shut down. And the Sonar exe on the second attempt to close cleanly. It only does this as far as I know when there is a lot going on in a project, like lots of plugins. All I have to do is open this project and close it, it closes but still running in the task manager unable to be terminated. I tried a blank project and loaded lots of plug and close the project and it closes fine. I don't know how to narrow this down yet.

Off topic, but--I don't use the pres in the MOTU that often.  I use Grace M101 and GA Pre-73 for my mics pres.  Having said that, the pres in my MOTU 828mk3 are noticeably better than the ones in my old M-Audio FW1814.  I hear often on this site that users do like the Focusrite Saffire and Scarlett pres.  I might get a focusrite ISA One to add to my little collection; it gets good reviews.  Good luck on getting the audio device you want.  If it were me, I would do the research, save the money and buy something reliable.  If you have the money the step up from MOTU is RME, but they are definitely more costly.  Why don't you start a new thread and ask for recommendations in your price range?

Thanks for the suggestion.  Will give it a try on my office computer with the M-Audio and see if this helps.

This happened to me today. My Sonar X2 PE hangs today due to some 32bit plugins. So I did Ctrl-alt-delete to start task manager>process, as usual I was only able to to stop bitbridge but not Sonar x2, so I log off instead and log in again, Sonar was stopped and was able to restart Sonar immediately. This is way faster than restarting my computer. I am not sure this will work everytime, I havn't done this enough yet.

musichoo That didn't work for me. I now have a go to project that always leaves sonar hanging. I logged off, logged back on Sonar is still running. EDIT: I figured Sonar wouldn't start since it was running in the background but I was wrong. Sonar did in fact start, but with a whole new task running in the back ground with a duplicate of the memory used. So I open my definately gonna hang project and closed it and couldn't get back in. I can see the log off forces things to close just like a shut down. but it still leaves things in their crashed state. I imagine I could keep doing this until I run out of memory.(in my brain)

When I log back on Sonar loads by my Akai mpk88 does not show up in drivers so a reboot is still needed to put things back the way they were.

Yeap, later part of the day, this happened to me too. Sorry, my idea was no help at all. I suspect my problem is that some of my 32bit plugins didn't work with bitbridge very well. I don't know if Jbridge is any better.

Re:Let my drivers GO! 2012/10/13 19:22:21 (permalink)
I just experienced something along these lines ... may or may not be related.  I had a one-instrument-track project with a 32-bit synth loaded.  Tried to do a replace synth (from the context menu clicking on the mini-keyboard icon in the track header).  The screen went mostly white and X1 would not close.  Killed X1 and it would refused to start again until after I rebooted.

If anyone who's experiencing these shutdown problems could see if the same thing happens on replace-synth on their system, it might give the bakers a little bit better clue as to what the problem is.

I can confirm that sonar does white out when you try to replace a 32bit synth with another. howere this is different from the hanging we're talking about. White out is a crash that stops you from working. The hanging only happens when you close sonar and it's hanging around in the taskmanager, with the same results as a crash,ie. you can't restart sonar.

I can delete the 32-bit synth instrument track and insert a new one with another 32-bit synth without a crash.  But then Sonar crashes when closing the project.  I haven't tested enough to see if this is repeatable.  Also, this is in X1.  I haven't yet installed X2, and I should probably confirm it misbehaves there as well (I fully expect it to) before logging a bug report.

Another crash and SONARDPR wont release.

No Plugs or Synths running at all. Just the Pro Channel.

I was deleting audio as the project was running and bang.
