London is being overrun...
with phone booths. I am not making this up, just repeating what I read in the Sunday paper. Apparently, in some places phone booths - er, boxes - are lined up every 100 feet. And the telecoms are lobbying to change the rule to allow them every 50 feet. I think I speak for the entire rest of the world when I say "WTF?".

Yes, I think you'll find that's utter bollocks. BT (British Telecom) are gradually removing them, and they're allowed to do that without consultation if there's another one within 1300 ft.

suppose I should comment, been a Londoner for forty*cough* years , 10 minute drive from abbey road if the road is clear (to put in context) there is a bit of your story that shows a cafe, run out of 2 boxes.. the person who has them keeps the stuff in the boxes themselves, *BUT* the local council is demanding he's serving the coffee inside the phone boxes, which .. well is impossible.. and they are fining him a lot everytime, they see him for conducting his business on the pavement. the phone boxes are now also used for BT wifi hotspots , even home routers have a 2nd channel that is separate that BT customers can access. it's handy if my home connection goes down, so why I went with them. if it's a loophole to get around how the advertising space is charged for, esp. west end , it also doesn't surprise me. A lot of the boards in prime locations now are animated / pixels instead of the old fashion rolls. They probably still have them ones on a roll / loop. hence why many business's work out of storage units instead of a real shop, the rates for a shop are crazy vs a storage unit.. and well charity shops and a certain coffee chain avoid paying the true amount they should, so loads of them are around now. many buildings I grew up with like studios and , including the church my folks were married in , that became a community centre now sell for millions as private homes, that people with deep pockets buy. this is now what the church my folks got married in looks like .. I used to go there when it was a community centre / dance hall , I was friends with the steward's son who ran it. http://www.hamhigh.co.uk/property/is-this-10m-property-the-most-expensive-house-in-kensal-green-1-4434953 Although a dutch friend, his music studio is a converted church. so I will be priced out of london sooner or later , thanks to dodgy foreign money in part.

Many Londoners would argue that its not the Figgn' Londoners filling the place up. The Welsh may argue that Wales is being filled up by friggin' Londoners. Brightonians, would argue that Brighton isn't being filled up by friggin' Londoners, but they are by all the properties and renting out at Friggin' London prices.

When I lived there 30 years ago, 20 million commuted to London every day from the home counties and surrounding areas... and that was in addition to the tourists. I'm sure the figures are much higher now. Personally, I always found Londoners to be extremely friendly, and very cosmopolitan. When people in other parts of the UK refer to "Londoners", they're usually talking about people from the South East of England in general, who (generally speaking), are not nearly as cosmopolitan as those living in London itself.

That figure is nearer 300,000 than 20 million. I've found people in London and the South East to be exactly no less friendly than people from other parts of the UK. The whole idea that Northerners are more friendly than Southerners is a lie made up to make them feel better about living in a post-industrial wasteland.

I wasn't saying that they were less friendly - I lived in the home counties for nearly 20 years - but I did get the feeling that they were more stuck in their ways, and less interested in other cultures. I had long hair in the 80's, and would constantly get "judged" or stereo-typed by people in the town my parents lived in. The villages were even worse (actually, I think villages ANYWHERE in the UK are like this). I never got this in London, where people really didn't care what you looked like.

That pretty much describes this area. There are people in Newton Stewart that have never been outside of it. I had a customer who told me she'd been to Dumfries once, on the bus, but never again...

Seems similar to many cities here with influx of newcomers, although phone booths are slowly disappearing here because of cell phones. Living close to certain things becomes desirable. Real estate prices go up. This crowds out the smaller guy.Only those with more money stay in the city which drives the prices up further. Many commute, the rest want no parts of it. I am really in that last group. I commute to a desirable city. I could live there if I wanted a huge mortgage. I decided I would rather drive there and live in the country....me and about 100,000 others Can't wait to retire.

London phone boxes have three functions.
Urinals for drunks. Space for posting prostitute's calling cards. Phone calls.
Mobile phones and the internet have diminished their importance for the last two, but not the first.
