Also, beware of ported speakers for mixing, as they can sometimes cause weird low-frequency ringing after-tones, and artificially enhanced low-end frequencies - making for a mix that doesn't sound right in other environments.
In any case, taking your mix to different listening environments will help you come up with something that is a good compromise. Just do what you can with what you have - don't over treat with acoustic treatment, and watch out for lopsided placement of speakers and for crazy reflective surfaces.
I think sometimes engineers gray up about as fast as presidents :)
