one thing that helped my when i got my last acoustic (taylor 110) was having another guy at GC play it for me while i listened from a couple feet away. that sealed the deal for me - i liked the way it sounded when i played it and when i listened to it. a lot of guitarists never actually listen to their guitars being played but that's what the mic is going to pick up unless you put the mic next to your head (which some people do).

the day i got it i was determined to try out a bunch of guitars. it was the second one i played. i tried a few martins, even the $2,000 ones, and kept going back to the $500 taylor (labor day sale). it sounded better and more importantly played well all over the neck without buzz and with good intonation. i knew a good deal when i saw it and bought it.

I did the exact same thing last week at GC except I didn't buy it. It really sounded good. I played the Martins, the Breedloves and the more expensive Taylors and they sounded great but not $1200 better :)

well it definitely didn't sound better than the other taylors, but i liked the sound better than the $1500 martins. i think that had to do more with strings than anything else, the martins just sounded dull. with some elixirs i'm sure they would have sounded a lot better. but it was not only the sound but the feel of the taylor that really sold me on it. it just played like an expensive guitar - for $500 or so.

just bought a Taylor. Spent almost a whole day going to many stores. Try before you buy. I have 3 Takamines--very nice--especially for the price, but have used one for recording. Taylor is king for that for me.

i think that in general, the taylor tone is probably the easiest to work with in a mix. it may lack some "character" but most of the time an acoustic's character gets mixed out anyway. even with my cheap taylor and cheap mics and untreated room i can get a good sound that fits well with a minimum amount of EQ that sounds good in a mix.

Jack,

I agree, the strings on the Taylor sounded brighter and fuller to the point that I asked the GC guy what they were and promptly bought a pack. They were the Elixir nanoweb lights with a .012 for the high E. In my old age, I have opted for lighter gauge strings for playability over tone but noticed that I haven't had to sacrifice much tone.

yeah i used the elixirs quite a bit and their tone is bright but good overall. i actually found with my taylor though that it was too bright, so i got some DR strings and that gave me pretty much exactly the tone i wanted. i don't know what the martins were strung with (probably martin strings ) but it didn't complement the guitars, that was for sure - probably just old strings or something.

I went to the Ed Roman Guitars shop here in Vegas today to get some work done on another guitar and there were some brands there that I have never heard of.
Rainsong Acoustics
Baker
Compass Rose
Eastman
Larivee
Parker
Some really nice designs and composite-carbon fiber models.

I don't think I saw any Mosrites Mike. I remember the name though. Weren't they a 80's guitar?

:-)

They were a early 60's guitar rediscovered by bands of successive generations in the 70's and 80's.

Semie Mosrite had a colorful history and produced them off and on from the 60's onward until his death in the early 90's.

There are lots of Japanese clones. At some point Mr. Roman claims to have established the right to the "Mosrite" name for U.S.A. distribution and he was commissioning small runs of what appeared to be high quality reissues of the original models.

I have, on occasion, hoped to have a chance to give one a test ride but it seems he has batches built on a infrequent and inconsistent basis.

best regards,
mike

He has numerous Mosrites listed on his web page for sale. I'm sure he has some in the store.
