Lots of crashes with Producer X2. One more upgrade, or switch DAWs?

I've been using Producer X2, and experiencing regular program crashes.   I'm using Windows 7, 64 bit, on a machine with 16g of RAM, SSD HD for the program and a separate internal HD for data.  7 core processor, Roland Octa-Capture interface, and running with a minimized operating system (non-essential startup stuff disabled).  I've been using Sonar since version 8, and while there are tons of new bells and whistles being added with each version, the frequent crashes are really killing the creative process, and I'm trying to decide whether to try one more upgrade, or write Sonar off as a learning experience and switch to something else.  Has anyone had any LESS trouble with Producer X3 than X2?

Re: Lots of crashes with Producer X2. One more upgrade, or switch DAWs? 2014/02/19 18:25:59 (permalink)
After posting here with my gripes about X2 Producer I was informed by the guys who help out here (thanks) that X3 has sorted things out. With this in mind I have ordered the latest X3 Producer upgrade and am hopeful that it will be as good as I am told. I also had to weigh up my options to see if I had to move to one of the many other DAWs available. I do feel that I have just paid a lot of money for being one of the many beta testers for X2 and am now paying for the X2 bug fix upgrade (X3), which, for me, came too soon after X2's release. I didn't want to buy the X3 upgrade with it's bundled extras, I just wanted a stable X2. My Sonar 8 Producer worked great but moving forward at that time seemed to be the right way to go. I am hopeful that I have made the right decision and the good guys on this forum will be able to answer any of my questions as they arise. I am aware that it is uncomfortable for some members of this forum to listen to gripes rather than straight forward operational questions but it's still relevant as other posts have mentioned the same tissues. I look forward to being very pleased with my pending X3 Producer upgrade and perhaps helping with some of the questions posted here. My experience with MIDI programming started when MIDI was a newborn baby back in the 80s and I've been with it, and the introduction af DAWs, ever since.

Thanks for your post, petgod! I'm hoping for something that will install and run right, without a bunch of fiddling around with ini files, playing with my registry, leaving my computer vulnerable to attacks, and making it useless for any other kind of work.  Hope the gamble pays off for you!

Cheers,

In my opinion sonar x2 is very stable! I have found over time that whenever I had problems with sonar instability the answer was always somewhere else. In 90% of cases in the 32-bit plugins ... or install / uninstall invalid programs . I run projects in sonar x2 over 100 tracks with enough plugins and sonar works perfectly. Take a look more closely in areas of 32 bit plugins ... you might find the answer there ...

HP EliteBook 8460p Intel core i7-2620M, 2,7 ghz, 8G RAM, Win 10 x64, CAKEWALK by BANDLAB, SONAR PLATINUM, M-AUDIO PROJECTMIX, ALESIS IO 26, TASCAM US 16x08, TC ELECTRONIC KONNEKT 24 D, ROLAND V SYNTH, ROLAND XP 50, M AUDIO PROKEYS 88.

Thanks for the input on the plugins.  I guess I could locate all of the 32 bit plugins that came with Sonar and disable them?

If you did a default X2 install, the 32-bit plug-ins should be in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Cakewalk\Vstplugins directory. You could remove that from your VST scan path as well (or even move the folder temporary to assess what you are using that is 32-bit).

X3 has been very stable right out of the chute for me, easy install, and it also shows you in the browser which plug-ins are 32-bit which is helpful. The X3 platform alone is worth the upgrade IMHO, all the extra goodies are just icing on the cake.

ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC), i7-8700k, 16GB RAM, GTX-1070Ti, Win 10 Pro, Saffire PRO 24 DSP, A-300 PRO, plus numerous gadgets and gizmos that make or manipulate sound in some way.

@petgod1 - I repeat my offer to help you with whatever your problems are.  I still do not quite understand why you posted under the other thread, then chose not to engage, even after several folks said they would help.

In any case, the offer stands - just please post each issue as a distinct thread, so they don't get mixed up.

I had a stable X1, X2, and X3 - folks with major problems seemed to have them largely due to 32-bit plugins in 64-bit Sonar, and various driver or system problems.

There were certainly bugs, and still are, but not really widespread crashes.

To the OP here - lots of folks will help you with anything that pops up.  It's a good forum full of good folks.

X3d has been one of the best releases I can ever remember, and there will be at least one more maintenance release coming - in March.

Once again, thanks for the reply Bob. The reason that I posted here was that whatever I tried, I could not get back to my original posts? I haven't asked for any help yet as I am waiting for X3 to arrive and will get up and running with that and then no doubt will have a few questions for this forum. In reply to the previous post, unfortunately our ADSL speeds in South Africa are so slow and our costs are so high that I steer clear of large downloads. I was happy to pay the extra to have the X3 discs couriered to Johannesburg. Needs must etc.
Thanks, Pete.

Hi All, while I understand that the 32bit plugin/64bit OS is a problem, the main X2 problem seems to be around cutting/pasting, sliding tracks etc....? Thats certainly the problems I've been having.....

@petgod1 - yeah, I could not get to those earlier posts of yours either, for some reason - quite weird.  Thanks for the explanation.

I would suggest that if there are non-Sonar causes to your X2 troubles, such as 32-bit plugins and such, these problems may well still occur in X3, so I STILL highly recommend you post each X2 issue as a separate thread, so that we can get some of that figured out and resolved.  PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do this, or you may get quickly frustrated with X3, potentially needlessly, and lose more time, potentially needlessly.

@MarkieMark - can you post your issues as distinct threads too?  Maybe there are some workarounds or resolutions to those that we can find for you.

We are eager to help, if you guys post your specific issues so that we can try.  :)

Thanks Bob. One issue was with clip dragging which I'm sure I've seen mentioned before and I'm hoping that this is one thing that has been sorted with X3. It's more eratic with multiple tracks that seem to just drop randomly onto other tracks or one single clip that, when dropped, will hide itself under another track.
Cheers, Pete.

Bob, et al,

Thanks for your responses to my original post here.  The only third party plugins I'm using (i.e. those that didn't come with Sonar) are Melodyne and Ozone 5, and they're pretty hard to do without.  As I said earlier, I'm looking for something that will run right without constant babying, and I can tell from the large amount of complaints in this forum and elsewhere online that it's not just me.  I'm just an amateur, with very limited time for music creation, and going online every ten minutes to report another Sonar crash is a huge time-burner, to say nothing of having to restart the program and start over again from the last save/autosave.

As far as reporting every glitch in a forum thread goes, what exactly is the purpose of the error reporting function in Sonar? It looks like Sonar is emailing a report, I get an autoresponse, then nothing.  If these reports aren't really providing input to the development team, can I at least disable them?

I guess I should just go ahead and download the trial version of X3 and cross my fingers...

Re: Lots of crashes with Producer X2. One more upgrade, or switch DAWs? 2014/02/20 18:01:46 (permalink)
There are a bunch of things that can be annoying, for which there are either workarounds or solutions, and you will nearly always get much faster response time from the forum than from Cakewalk staff - though they also frequent the forum.

It's just that there are more of us than them, so the chances that one or more of us can help you is greater.

The on-line error submission process DOES work - things do get internally worked and prioritized and reacted to, and while it may seem as though things are not responsive, it may just be a time it takes to get to it kind of thing.

Again, the forum has seen most of the kinds of things that can trip you up with all of the versions of Sonar, so I suggest you post the issues and let us help you.

There is a GIANT bunch of accumulated wisdom here in this forum, and folks will bend over backward to assist you, if possible.

Most errors are not crashes, and most can be fixed or gotten past, so please post each of your issues as a separate thread, so things don't get mixed up, and let's get your current version fixed up.

Please note that if there are system things affecting your current installation, then you may well continue to have those issues in X3, even though they may be caused by something outside of Sonar.

I look forward to helping you - let's get started.

There are a bunch of things that can be annoying, for which there are either workarounds or solutions, and you will nearly always get much faster response time from the forum than from Cakewalk staff - though they also frequent the forum.

Thanks, Bob! This is going to be a project, I can tell.

The first thing I would to is update to X2a. All of the errors show SONARPDR.exe, version: 19.0.0.306 the current version is 19.1.0.351.

I'm still short a few posts of being able to do PM.  I've been trying to get downloads from Asus all day, but the site isn't responsive.

Yep, that's the right model, but i still can't get a response from the Asus website.  I've got the latest build of X2 installed now. Will try late tonight/early tomorrow on the Asus update when maybe their servers aren't so busy.
Many thanks for your help, guys!
