If ya want, Lynn, send me a wav of this track to master. I think with a few small tweaks I might be able to let this shine a smidge more.

Lynn, Well, I never thought anything I had to say really amounted to much in this forum, but you just proved me wrong. I do like the new mix much better and the reason why is because now I can clearly hear all of the instrumentation much better. You may want to bring the vocal down just a little tiny bit, as they are way up front, but that is only my opinion, as they seem over powering to the rest of the piece. This is a very nice song and very unique to your voice. I really enjoyed this remix, you did a nice job.

Peace and blessings, John

John, you inspired me to think beyond to norm, and I think that the song is better for it.  I  know the vocals are a touch loud until I listen in my car.  With some road noise in the background, the vocals rise above it.  I learned this trick by auditioning about 50 commercial CDs and discovering which elements disappear, and which elements are audible.  Nevertheless, it's something to consider.  Your choice of headphones are terrific, and I'll bear that in mind in future mixes.  Thanks for your input.

All the best,
Lynn

Yesterday, on Cinco De Mayo, I received  a remastered version of this song from JamesYoYo for which I am very grateful.  I put both versions in post #1 for your perusal.  I have learned much from this project, and I want to thank all of you again.

Hard to go wrong with a Yoyo factory remix. I remember this tune, he really brought out your inner Steve Miller

Is that a reverse reverb effect on the guitar?

The differences are subtle... I do hear the difference... the 2.1 version with James mastering sounds better to me... I made several a/b comparison listens... There seems to be more depth in 2.1... Id love to hear James describe the differences...

Great work again Lynn... a terrific production, made a little more perfect by the Yoyo touch... well done guys...

First of all, Makke, I didn't mean to overlook you, but thank you for your kind words.

Robby, that is indeed a reverse reverb on the guitar that I did manually.  James surely helped to bring it out a bit more.

Frank, I would like to hear what James did exactly, but I think he scooped out some low mids for clarity and definition.  Perhaps he'll chime in.  It is a learning experience for sure.  Thanks for listening, yet again.

Lynn

Here is the third installment of my upcoming compilation CD.  I posted this song about a year ago, took your suggestions, remixed, and then tabled this song until recently.  Since I posted this last, I've added a pair of KRK Rokit 8s and a Focusrite VRM box to my mixing environment which I used extensively in this latest mix.  Hopefully, my mixes will translate better over different listening devices than before, but it's up to you all to tell me if this is so.  Your help is always invaluable to me.  I want to thank you all in advance for your time and trouble.

Remixed on 4/30

Lucky Star 2.0 can be found here:http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?q=hi&songID=11914967

On 5/5, I received a remastered version of this song (Lucky Star V2.1) from JamesYoYo which can be found here: http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=12308225&q=hi

I appreciate very much his interest and involvement in this project, and I leave both versions for your perusal.  Thanks again for all the help.

Huge thumbs up Lynn. Loved the first version, can hear the polish difference. I am in identity crisis mode, so, not been foruming much, saw this though and had to have a listen, as it was by far one of my favs. Personally trying to get into a work ethic mode in the studio now it's set back up.. was hard. New couple of mixes up but won't raid your thread :). Nice to hear your work again.

Cheers,

Tony

Cool song Lynn.

The original sounds excellent to me, and James's mastering job is the icing on the cake.

Great song!!!
Sounds like it was mixed with KRK Rockit 8's.  Don't be afraid of them...experiment with lots of mixes and different types of songs and get to know to how they translate. Don't be afraid to add some low end to the mix either. It took countless mixes for me to get proficient at mixing with my Dynaudio monitors.

Hi Scotty, I'm glad you liked the tune.  It'll take a while to get used to the Rokits, but I'm plugging away.  The jury's still out on them, but they're a vast improvement over my old Alesis.  My VRM box has been a big help, as well.

James, thanks for stopping by and taking a listen.  My latest mix has some of the low mids scooped out like Jamesyoyo's, but not as compressed.  This whole project has been an enormous learning experience for me.

This is a frikin awesome song Lynn. Really good. The mix is pretty good, with the exception of one of the toms riding on the bass in the upper range that is fatiguing. It is exasperated by James' mastering, though overall James did tighten up the mix nicely otherwise. IMO that area really needs to be addressed to warm up and complete this stellar song. Really enjoyed that, thank you.

I shopped for some monitors to play my Motif through and ended up buying Mackie MR5 monitors. I did a side by side comparison with the Rockits, the Mackies won out with a tighter response. They were only about $120 each after discount. I found the Rockits to be muddy in the low and low mid range. Maybe the filters weren't set properly on the ones I tried out, who knows?

Hi Shad, thanks for the positive remarks.  I'm glad you brought my attention to the bass and percussion mix, as I'll be taking that into account when I do the final mix.  Good ears!

Scotty, sometimes I think the Rokits are a little harsh in the upper mid range, but I have them set up in the middle of my room, away from all walls, so the bass response is better than what I'm used to.  I may shop around some more.

You must be my Lucky Star
'Cause you shine on me wherever you are
I just think of you and I start to glow
And I need your light
And baby you know
[Chorus:]
Starlight, starbright first star I see tonight
Starlight, [starbright] make everything all right
Starlight, starbright first star I see tonight
Starlight, [starbright] yeah
You must be my Lucky Star
'Cause you make the darkness seem so far
And when I'm lost you'll be my guide
I just turn around and you're by my side
[chorus]
Come on shine your heavenly body tonight
'Cause I know you're gonna make everything all right
You may be my lucky star
But I'm the luckiest by far

hehehe

this reminds me a bit of king crimson, mixed with peter gabriel and U2
i like the vocal approach...
i like all the breath capture...
love the guitar approach as well...

the solo is really neat, the reverse effect is cool

i listened to the remastered version first...
it sounds dull to me, like everything from 8khz up has been rolled off....
could be the player.....

then i listened to the 2.0 version, and i think i like that one better, the voice had more presence.

mix wise, i want to hear everything brighter...
the percussion needs more 'attack'.... not volume, just eq on the high end.
the bass seems too smooth, as if it is limited..

i think if it had a chance to breath more, on this particular song, would really help the song rise and fall more....

if you want to dial the vocals in..... get rid of a lot of the effects...
and go in an manually edit each waveform, at the end of every phrase, cut them all off at exactly the same time.

you have a lot of vocal 'run-overs' at the ends of phrases.
i battle this a lot on my own stuff.
but a very cool tune for sure

Bat, you've pointed out things I've not heard nor considered before.  Adding high end to the overall mix is not that difficult, as this would take place in the mastering.  The vocal run-overs are the kind of catch that only one with experience and golden ears would likely hear.  I've added this advice to my learning curve and will take this into consideration in the final version.  Thank you very much for taking a careful listen and imparting your advice for my help.  What a nice way to start the day!

"Adding high end to the overall mix is not that difficult, as this would take place in the mastering."...

NO, don't do it there, ever.
always do it in the mix.

never rely on mastering to do ANYTHING, except to give you modern commercial volume level.
and even that, is subject to debate.

you are going to want to do this on a track by track basis.

and you will want to spend the time to figure out exactly what tracks need what frequencies, don't do a blanket pass and high shelf everything...
