Lucky Star 2.0 (not the Madonna song) - REMASTERED by jamesyoyo on 5/5

Here is the third installment of my upcoming compilation CD.  I posted this song about a year ago, took your suggestions, remixed, and then tabled this song until recently.  Since I posted this last, I've added a pair of KRK Rokit 8s and a Focusrite VRM box to my mixing environment which I used extensively in this latest mix.  Hopefully, my mixes will translate better over different listening devices than before, but it's up to you all to tell me if this is so.  Your help is always invaluable to me.  I want to thank you all in advance for your time and trouble.

Remixed on 4/30

Lucky Star 2.0 can be found here: http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=11914967&q=hi&newref=1
On 5/5, I received a remastered version of this song (Lucky Star V2.1) from JamesYoYo which can be found here: http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=12308225&q=hi

I appreciate very much his interest and involvement in this project, and I leave both versions for your perusal.  Thanks again for all the help.

Lynn, I really like the song and the arrangement.  I listened on phones and monitors and over here it seems to be lacking bottom end.  I can never explain exactly what I mean but the bass seems very trebly.  Now, that might be what you are looking for.  Nice tune!  If what I'm hearing is the kick, it too is very trebly.  I would wait till someone else comments because my ears are acting up lately, or my judgement!  :-)

    Lynn,

I remembered liking this song more when you posted it before and thinking it had more of a Peter Gabriel vibe than V2.   Luckily, you left the original Lucky Star on your music page and I went back and listened to it.   The original seems to have a more natural rhythmic interplay going in the percussion section and the bass, whereas the V2 version seems to be more mechanical or MIDI sounding.    That cool interplay of v1 seems to be missing to my ears.    Definitely a really good song but I liked the original version best.

I don't remember the song. I like the song. It is unique.

I have to echo the bottom end comment. I like the ending!

    Nice!!!

Well, I agree with you about the low end.  Mark, thanks for pointing out to me the original version was still there.  I'd forgotten that I left it on SC, and it was helpful in my remix.  Warren and Robert, I went back and put more low end into the mix to get it closer to the original mix.  I'm still  feeling out this new monitor system of mine, and your feedback helps.  The new version is up, now, and I hope it sounds better to your ears.  Thanks for your time and help.

Lynn, Very nice song. What I heard on my pro headsets is in the beginning the vocals started out kind of dry and could use some stereo imaging throughout the song, not a lot, but some. The drums could use some dynamic expansion and the over all mix could use a touch of Harmonic excitement. Once you have all that done finish it with a limiter, making sure the vocals stay up front and are nice and clear. This is just my opinion, but it is a nice song, just needs some tweaking so it stands out.

    Peace and blessings, John

    Hi, Lynn,

I remember this very cool song from a while back, and although I missed the first mix of the new version, this current mix sounds fantastic!

The song has a really unique vibe, excellent playing and vocals, and the instrumentation in the mix sounds really great with everything sounding nice and crisp, and in it's own space.

Great song and excellent mix, Lynn, very well done!

Cool tune Lynn. Lots of good stuff happening in there. I thought the vocal melody was great over the other instruments.

    Very well done.

Mark, I really appreciate you kind comments.  You've been doing pretty well for yourself, too.

John, after listening to you latest productions, I have to pay you your respects.  I'd like to know what kind of headphones you are using so that I can hear it like you do.  I did run the vocal through a light chorus that spreads the vocal over the center of the stereo field.  Rather than use my harmonic exciter, I boosted the EQ  @ 5kz to avoid harshness.  As for the percussion, it could come up a db or two.  Thank you for you insightful and detailed analysis.

Frank, honestly, your own production skills have impressed and influenced me several times.  I'm just trying to keep it as organic as you seem to do effortlessly.

Bob, the same thing I said about Frank applies to you, as well.  Your consistency is what I hope to achieve.

Scott,  thanks for dropping in and contributing with your kind words.  We may be neighbors, as I live in the Emerald City.

It is a very interesting piece and it sounds great!  I would lower the vocals just a tad bit.  Yeah, it has some Genesis or Pink Floyd influences.

Shawn, thanks for the comments about the low end.  That was my first concern, and after the first few comments, I was pointed in the right direction.  Your contribution is valuable to me.

Vicente, thanks for taking the time to listen and comment.  I appreciate your observation on the vocal level.  My goal is to have it just barely sit above the instruments so it won't get drowned out.  I'll be listening to this more carefully the next time I pull it up.

I must have missed V1 of this.  If it was just about a year ago, that was when I was making my big cross country move.

Though I can't compare, I can say that I really enjoyed this version.  Really good song that was well arranged and performed.  The mix sounded just fine to me.

Although I do not know the first version, the new version sounds just great to me. The vibe reminds me a bit of Thomas Dolby's "the flat earth" - it combines organic with electronic music in a very natural way!

Lynn this is fantastic. I enjoyed this immensely. Listening on cans it sounds very well balanced, I love the vocals (reminiscent of Peter Gabriel to my ears) and everything in the mix sounds clear.

I don't recall v1 (going to go and find it on SC now) but v2 I like!

I am grateful for all the responses to this song.  One post by theguitarplayer (John) had me thinking, though, and I did my best to try his suggestions.  This latest mix is the result.  I hope this is in the ballpark, and that it keeps the original flavor as well.  Thanks again for your help.  The new mix can be found here:http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=11914967&q=hi&newref=1 and in post #1.

    Really nice Lynn.

Only crit I have is the tik tokish keyboard line in the verse is kind of loud/distracting.

Really cool song, Lynn. Though the idea of you doing the Madonna version really piqued my interest!
You always have great ideas and this tune is no exception.

Thank you so much, James.  Though, you never know about the Madonna version.  I could easily hear a lounge lizard/blues version of this.

    All the best,
    Lynn
