Lucky Star 2.0 - remixed 9/27/12
Hi, everyone. This is a new song that I've written and recorded over the last 2+ weeks. It's a mellow rock song dedicated to the one I love. I stayed withing the box, using only X1, Jamstix, and Superior Drummer. The strings at the end of the song come from Dimension Pro. I hope you enjoy it, and since it's still brand new, I'm open to suggestions in all aspects. Thanks for taking the time to listen. You can find it here: http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=11862494&q=hi 9/27/12- I have remixed this song in X2 using some of the new goodies. I made the lead vocal louder and replaced Perfect Space with the new Breverb. I also treated the percussion with the new console emulation in Pro Channel. It is titled " Lucky Star 2.0". I left the original for comparison. It can be found here: http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=11914967&q=hi&newref=1 I want to thank all that took part in the co-production of this song. Lynn

Yeah! What a great song. I love the orchestration that keeps on driving right through the piece with all the variation to keep the listener grabbed from beginning to end. And the lyrics are wonderful. I am always reluctant to give quality composers like you any suggestions - but I will anyway! Perhaps just bring the vocals forward a bit and drop the orchestration back a bit when you are singing. My speakers aren't that great and perhaps it works better on quality speakers, but your voice became a bit drowned on occasion - and I really wanted to hear you! Love it.

Sounding really good to me Lynn. Bass is totally right on. I would only have hoped for a rhythmic change in the percussion on the chorus. Not a crit, just personal taste. Great song.

Lynn- I am so impressed with this! Sounds like something off a Peter Gabriel album. There really isn't much to critique technically; this is one to simply enjoy. Ya know, the chorus reminds me a bit of Mr. Mister too (the 'Broken Wings' band from the 80s..a song i have always really liked) The prominence of the bass is great here as well as tonally it has nicely rounded corners around all that full-bodiness. String outro is a neat touch. Very well done. funny at first i thought this was going to be a Madonna cover ;p -Daren

I like it, kept me intrested all the way through. Malcolmb sorta touched on something there about the vocals" being drowned out on occasion", I'd say its from whatever modulation effect you have on your voice when it sweeps into the lower tone of your voice causing that. Really like the Bass...what are you using for that? Keep it up. Kev

Malcolmb, you have good ears, my friend. I will boost the lead vocal because it became apparent to me when you pointed it out. Thanks for the suggestion. Daryl, thanks for having a listen. I appreciate your comments. Makke, thank you very much for stopping by and your comments. Ed, I appreciate your comments, especially about the bass. As for the rhythm change in the chorus, I thought about that and decided to go with a textural change there instead, for contrast. I will revisit this later. Thanks for the idea. Daren, thanks for your kind comments. The reference to Peter Gabriel and Mr. Mister are too kind, but, in truth, I did have Peter Gabriel in the back of my mind when I recorded the vocals. What a great inspiration he is, and good ears to you for hearing that. Kev, you and Malcolmb are right about the vocal being too low in spots. The chorus effect did sweep away some definition, and I'll address that soon. My bass setup is simple - I used a Fender Prophesy bass into a Focusrite Platinum Voice Master preamp with no EQ and light compression (2:1 ratio). I thank you for your time and invaluable ears. To all of you, thanks so much, my friends.

Lynn, I don't think it's some much an issue of the over all vocal volume, but the lower freq. setting of the chorus effect itself. I would set that freq. a bit higher before moving the vocal trk fader..just my 2 bits. Kev

It said this was Indian music? But I don't hear a tabla or anything? Are you sure you got the Genera right? I didn't care much for the drum sounds and the percussive synths. But that's just personal. The lead guitar is pretty cool, and your voice has its typical quality which I find very pleasing. Kind of Steve Miller meets Roger Waters (to me). The drums and percussion, seem to need to do more during the verse, and on the chorus, they're just buggin me. The song is cool though, and very original, good job.

Kev, that's a good idea about changing the lower frequency of the chorus to bring out the vocal. I'll start with that, and I'll bet you're right. Good ears and good catch. Robby, I'm not certain where you're getting the Indian music concept from, but I suspect your tongue is planted firmly in your cheek? I think you're gonna have to learn to live with the percussion as is because I feel that I achieved my goal in that regard. Thank you for pointing out the guitar and vocal. As well as you sing, I'd love to hear your voice on a song of mine. I still love that Bad Company song you posted a few weeks ago. Take care.

This is really nice! I like your style here. Everything sounds good here! Love the bass! My only crit would to make the end more legato rather than staccatto. IMO, it sounds abrasive. Other than that Well done!!! Great song!!!

GREAT piece! Love the flow of the percussion work playing with the bass line. I agree with the others on the Peter Gabriel vibe. The guitar tones also add a Police/ Andy Summers overtone. Your vocals add warmth and the harmonies are smooth. Looking forward to hearing your next piece. Kev

It's not very often that I like something a lot on the first listening but this is one of those songs. At first I thought it was some kind of latin dance thing and then the vox came in and my whole perception changed...I thought wait a minute, this is either early Genesis or Peter Gabriel...not just the feel but the quality of the voice...damn! Then at about 01:00 it takes a half time feel....and I thought oh hell yeah! I love the sparse bass line...the elec. guitar in the ride is real right? I mean it's not something I might have is it? I thought the ending was pretty weird and out of context but I've thought the same about a lot of genius works. Overall I'd pay a buck for a hi-quality recording...very nice and creative Lynn! EDIT: oops I was writing my comments as I listened and had posted this prior to reading all the other posts so it looks like I'm not the only one that thinks Gabriel/Genesis qualities (I would take all those references as a huge compliment)...again, very nice and please PM me when you release the CD

Mike, thank you for having a listen and replying. The vocal has been addressed but not posted. Check back in a week or so. Guitarpima, it's good to hear from you. Thanks about the bass. I actually wrote this song around the bass track. As for the strings, I tried legato first, but it sounded less natural to my ears than the way I went. But, I think more experimentation in this area is justified. Thanks for your time. Rikkie, that means a lot coming from you. Vicente, thank you for coming by. I really had something of a dilemma with the ending, and I tried out several variations before going with this. Sometimes it's just a crapshoot. Again, thank you so much for you comments, and if I think of something better, I'll let you know. Kev, you truly flatter me. I had Peter in the back of my mind when I recorded this, but I just simplified the guitar part as much as I could because my fingers are getting stiffer all the time. Thank you. Randy, I've been following your music for some time on these various forums, and I'm glad you dropped in. Thank you for your kind comments and taking the time to listen. The guitar is just my 1975 Strat miking a Line 6 AX2-212 with a Shure 57 into a Focusrite Platinum Voicemaster. As for the ending, I will spend some time with that in the next few days. I just want to avoid my typical fade out. And, to all, Peter Gabriel was a large influence on me, and I can hardly believe that I evoked him to you, But, I am so grateful.

Excellent vocals. Nice chord progression and melody. It could use more guitar, but otherwise very cool tune. Vocals could come up a tad in spots but then I like to really hear the vocals, so everone will probably not feel that way. I wasn't all that wild about the ending. I would like to hear it build into big ending. This is one of my favorites of yours, there is some good writing here. Keep singing!! It's good! Well done. Daryl

Daryl, thanks for having a listen. I've been rethinking the ending for several days. I know there's something better just outside my perception at the moment. I can think of several alternatives, but nothing that shakes my core, yet. It'll come. Thank you for your kind comments. If I played guitar as well as you, there would be more guitar. At the moment it's better to play up to my strengths than weaknesses.
