So this is their big hyped announcement for new mastering tools, an I-pad app? What a big let down. I was expecting T-racks 5 or something new and cool. http://www.ikmultimedia.com/news/?item_id=7771 EDIT: OK, I see that is is available for PC too.

Well this explains the promo videos. I noticed that they focused around the console of controls he was using so I guess this was a little foreshadowing of the type of program they were working on.

I'll wait for a sale...Ozone Advanced currently fills my needs quite nicely... and the fact that I have the IK Mastering EQ and the Stealth Limiter, which I can also use within 07A...so no hurry for this....

My interest would be if I could use it with Cubasis on the iPad. I have ozone and that's fine with me at this point. But I just downloaded the demo iPad version, to see what it is all about. potentially this is quite a nice product, depending on it's uses and versatility.

After reading it it seems to be of the FG-X ilk with a few more controls. If one did not have any mastering software this could be a great and presumably easy tool for mastering not Mastering.

There's of course some information on our site, might have been missed. Short version - it is about the signal chain down to the interaction between the gear at a new level, the gain staging of the whole chain, and how things are tweaked by the award-winning engineers at Lurssen Mastering - especially Gavin Lurssen himself. You also have the ability to make tweaks as this is not just a one-trick/one-knob pick-a-preset and go type of product or experience. OK that was not so short of a version. Here's the site info, though, slightly longer: From http://www.ikmultimedia.com/lurssen Lurssen Mastering Console is a totally new approach to digital audio mastering. It provides a complete emulation of the entire mastering processing chain used by world-renowned mastering engineers Gavin Lurssen and Reuben Cohen and their team. This chain includes tube equalizers, solid state equalizers, limiters, de-essers and solid state compressors. The simulation of this chain reflects their “whole chain philosophy” — a belief that outstanding audio mastering comes from the careful selection and routing of gear, and the subsequent interactions created by those choices. Lurssen Mastering Console models and recreates the interactions between the individual processors in its chain down to the actual gear hookup schematics themselves. This approach effectively gives you access to over 25 years worth of knowledge in the form of workflow secrets, special techniques, signal chains and technical knowhow.

Can't argue with that! OK, maybe with " a totally new approach" based on 25 years of experience. But that would just be pickin' nits. I'm looking forward to hearing it. And seeing how you jammed vacuum tubes into an iPad. Not saying I'm skeptical, mind you, just curious.

From the press release screen shots it looks like they are using 60, 120, 3k, 6k, 10k fixed EQ and from the text those levels aren't even automateable (only the input and push). While I do believe most internet forum babbling mastering engineers are full of hot air, I don't see how any ME (good or bad) would be happy with that limited set of choices. If 20 styles, 2 drive knobs and 5 EQ bands is all it takes to master something then I'm set. Kind of sad IK isn't supporting Android on this. I'm think I'm going to stick with the Ozone and the T-Racks stuff for my mastering. This doesn't seem very compatible with T-Racks world model though, kind of a new direction for IK. But maybe its been coming for a while now.

This is obviously aimed at the hobbyist market, not pro mastering engineers. Same with Waves' new Greg Wells plugins (and their other Artist Signature series), Toontrack's EZMix "Mastering" packs, and similar products. Ease of use, instant results, and cool graphics are the name of the game here. This isn't a knock on these things; for folks who aren't experienced with traditional tools and techniques they're great. But I doubt they'll replace the old ways anytime soon, or achieve the same results. I'm assuming we'll be able to demo this. I like trying out new software, whatever its function, even if it won't necessarily do anything that my existing tools can't already do. If it gets good results quickly, I may be interested. I may have missed it, but I'm wondering if it will be incorporated into the existing Custom Shop / T-RackS platform, and if it can be purchased with IK credits. Cheers, Eddie

Yeah we would! I would pitch in on bail and pay good money for a copy of any mugshots. Can you imagine Bapu being processed? "Do you have an alias"? "I have everything they make." "No, I mean are there any other names you are known by?" "Oh, yeah, Bapu, Stan Dupp, the man with everything, the guy who can't spell for s*#t, Bapuji, Fizzy Pickle. Want any more?" "No that's enough". "And Juan; don't forget Juan!" "And Fred...or thread...I forget".

Looks like there are some more controls, they put up some more detailed information on their website after my last post. Not a lot more controls mind you, but a few. I can't help but think they missed the chance for a real revolution though. They modeled this studio's gear and mastering chain but they didn't model the most important piece of equipment at Lurssen - Gavin Lurssen himself. OK that's crazy right, but seriously these tools don't need to be realtime. It could take an audio file and analyze it. Measure the attack rates. Look at the power at various frequencies. It could collect info from the user about the type of music and the intended direction of the master. Just like real mastering engineers do. Then using all this processing power to figure settings to drive all that modeled and emulated equipment. That would be a new and unique mastering approach. This, this is just some more analog equipment simulated by software with some presets designed for generic music categories. As for being aimed at the hobbyist market the PC version has a retail price of $300. That seems a bit high for the hobbyist market. Even $99 for the iPad version seems high for the hobbyist. I actually like IK a lot. I have and use a lot of their products. I just am not tracking with this iPad/mobile focus they have these days.
