Yes indeed....the feature works with MIDI, but not an analog input ;-(

So....would this be a feature request, or am I not doing something to enable?

,,,,and having layers in take lanes would be nice, but not critical imo.  Would be nice for editing if you goofed up a layer.

You don't have the Mute Previous Takes option enabled, correct?

Also, are you using Punch Points at all?

correct...and no.  NOT using punch points, you do not have the option to select "mute previous takes" either.  That option is "greyed out"
But in any case...the mute is NOT selected nor using punch points.

Like posted above, using MIDI, previous takes are heard as the segment of music loops.  An analog input is not allowing this kind of monitoring.  ONLY hearing what is being played at the moment.
AFTER recording, of course with SOS recording, ALL is able to be heard.  But for "building" a loop, of course without hearing previous passes, it becomes more difficult to achieve exactly what you want.

The above description of a "looper" does exactly what I'm describing.  I do have a JamMan looper, which allows you to build on successive looped passes, while hearing everything.  I guess I'm asking if Sonar has a "looper" so to speak, built in... (yes when using MIDI...NO when using non MIDI sources, it seems).

What if you stored each take in its own track(not lane but track)? Instead of recording directly to a singular track. Then bounce all to one track to finish? Might be easier to edit out bad passes. If it works.

Why does this work for MIDI and not analog?

it does work. hence the reason I edited my previous post. im not sure why its not working for you.
I can use sound on sound to record several takes over and over and hear them on each pass as they layer in the same track. haven't tried it using take lanes.

I use this on almost every project to thicken up guitar solos. rather than record 4 separate solos I use sos and create a wall of guitars for the solos. sometimes do the same thing with small vocal sections.(back up/gang vocals)
rather than wasting 5 tracks, just put them all in sos and hear one after the other.

I think you're missing what I'm asking...or I'm beating a dead horse.  I've tried every configuration possible. YES, I can hear what I'm recording and yes I can hear ALL the takes, AFTER I stop record mode and then playback.  But I can ONLY hear the "live" take and not what was recorded on previous passes of my loop.

To try and give an example.    I can't really play Clavinet style keyboards well, but I know what notes make up a nice syncopated rhythm.  If I do several passes, I can keep adding on new Clav parts, BUT I need to hear what I previously did.  The only way possible I am seeing is either (1) Use MIDI or (2) stop after each pass and monitor the previous takes, while recording new Clav parts.  This does not work in LOOP mode using SOS...either with "single track" storage, new tracks, take lanes, or whatever.
Somebody described it perfectly earilier.   Recording like a guitar looper.  You can keep adding and hear the cumulative effect.
PLEASE>>>  if I am wrong, tell me what boxes to check, when I right click on the "record" button.

I'm surpised this hasn't been addressed by the Bakers in all this time, but maybe more surprised it doesn't come up on the forum more often.

Here's the workaround I came up with 6 years ago:

http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/2083051

To summarize:
- Insert a delay capable of very long delay intervals in the audio track, and set the delay equal to the loop length.
- Set the Feedback to 100% with a 50/50 Wet/Dry mix.
- Enable new layers (now lanes) on overlap, and record away.
- Each new loop will be repeated endlessly by the delay, but each recorded layer will contain only what you played on that pass.
- Use a keybinding to stop the audio engine after stopping the transport to kill the delay feedback.
