I am still on Win 7 so I have not had the problem described here, but this might help:

One solution is to disable onboard HD audio in the BIOS.

Cheers, Peter.

In my case, it was nvidia's HDMI drivers, not the onboard sound card which was reenabling with each W10 update. I think Slartabartfast posted the answer.

This happens with every W10 update

That's ridiculous!

I have also experienced this with a win 8.1 update.

I use a laptop and do not disable the on-board audio devices ever.
When I go portable sometimes i rely on the on-board WASAPI drivers so I do not disable.  (get pretty decent latency too.)
Is there really much of a performance hit ?

As far as I can tell, what gives the biggest hit are the "HD" drivers that graphics cards install so that gamers can be happier than audio people.

Yep - although not as big a hit as Craig saw with his AMD/ATI drivers, the impact of my NVidia card's HD audio drivers is significant, for sure. I also keep my onboard audio card enabled for windows sounds and don't  notice a big adverse impact  but always disable the hdmi (HD audio) drivers which do appreciably affect the latency/buffer size i am able to run at.

Thanks for clearing that up, looks like a problem I do not have.
