The most recent project I worked on has stored the audio data in the Global Audio Folder rather than in the project folder.  It didn't do this for any the previous projects.   This is a pain as I used to back up/restore by copying/pasting back the project folder with all its contents.  Also the global Audio folder is on my SSD which I try to keep lean.
 
 So far as I can see, the old "Per-Project-Audio Folders" tick box doesn't seem to exist in Platinum.  Anybody got any ideas why Sonar would have started to use the global Audio Folder?  I haven't been playing with the preferences....

Yep, same thing happened to me when the new start screen was introduced.  Did you update recently?
 
I had recorded about 15 projects before I realized what had happened.  It was a pain to fix. Here's what I did.
 
1. Go to preferences, go to advanced, and uncheck "Show  Start Screen on Launch."  You probably don't really need t do this but I did it out of irrational anger, and it made me feel better. 
 
2. Open every project that you have done since the "change" happened and use the Save As command.  Make sure to check the box "Copy all audio with project." The per project audio folders is no longer listed under File - Audio Data in the preferences.
 
 
3.  This should save all the audio to your project, but will also leave it in the global audio file too.  So then you need to decide if you want to delete all that.
 
Took me a long time to sort out, and I was told that it was my error because apparently when I updated I was asked if I wanted to save my preferences.  Here is the thread.

Thanks for this - you are right that this started happening since an update.   I'll work through your work around tomorrow.  I guess I am lucky I didn't get too much further with new projects...

With the new Start Screen, the default behavior for Per-Project Audio is DIFFERENT, depending on how you start a new project.
 
1.  IF you start a new project From a Template, such as the Normal template, or one of those, then you WILL get the usual Per-Project Audio behavior, where Sonar will automatically create an Audio folder within the project folder.
 
2.  IF INSTEAD, you do NOT start your new project by clicking on the New From a Template option on the Start Screen, Sonar will NOT automatically create and use Per-Project Audio and it will NOT create an audio folder within your new project folder.
 
It's a little bit disconcerting, and in my opinion could have been implemented a bit more safely, but if you always get in the habit of using one of the project templates, you won't get bitten by Sonar failing to use Per-Project Audio.

Thanks to both of you for this.  I now have the audio in the project folder for the song I was working on, and I can also see the difference between New Project and New Project from a Template, so I know what to do going forward.
 
I am glad I didn't get too far before realising what had happened as it could have filled my SSD to the point where it caused system difficulties or to the point that I needed to restore a song from a backup which had no audio!  
 
When I update, I update and assume that everything will be OK - which I can now see is a rather naive way of going about things.  Where should I look to see where such new features are listed?  The obvious web pages tend to deal with "big" things like Drum Replacer or Rapture Session...

There are usually release notes associated with a new maintenance update for Sonar, but I am not sure if those would go into enough detail to have explained this particular issue.
 
I DO recall that they had changed it to default to Per-Project Audio, and that the option to change that was removed, but I do not recall seeing anything that had explained that you had to choose to start a new project from the Project Templates in order to get that Per-Project Audio to happen.
 
I had actually learned about in the same manner that you did - in terms of realizing that a new project all of a sudden had NO Audio sub-folder, and that clips had been placed in the global audio.  THAT was when I learned that it working or not depended on whether or not I picked to start my new project from a Project Template or not.
 
Glad you are running with a clearer understanding now of that piece of it all :)

Thanks Mr. E Bone, your words are not taken lightly.  I am pleased that Mr. Richard, or you, did not have to deal with it as I had to.  I work fast, and though something looked amiss, I felt secure that everything was copacetic.

Ok, but what about us that don't want per project audio folders but are now forced into them if we want to use a template?

Yet again, some programmer saying, "I think they want it like THIS" when, in fact, they don't want it that way.    It would be good if CW studied medicine:  "DO NO HARM".
 

Oh, it definitely caused some grief, until I figured out what had happened.
 
I DO think it would be good if there were a way to perhaps have a default option checked, or a setting in Preferences, to accommodate those who may not want it on.  Perhaps you could submit that as a Feature Request.
