  • Touch screens or not (p.2)

I'm sort of neutral on touch screens. I have a tablet with touch and its very nice. However my desktop has two non touch monitors. I also have a Mackie Control. I can't see it being replaced by a touch screen.

Touch is handy for some actions under Windows 10. But a touch device is not essential in my view. Sonar is touch aware and it will do well with a touch screen yet some things are better done with a mouse. The tablet has a keyboard that is detachable with a touch pad yet I opted for a bluetooth mouse to go with it. One reason the mouse has a wheel and two buttons. Combined these things add ease of use and flexibility to the touch screen. Obviously a touch screen by itself will work but not as well as a mouse or in the case of Sonar a dedicated CS.

I have a ...
... Tablet PC with touch - I love it for live shows and all the power you get from such a small thing, but I don't use touch as the screen is too small / resolution is way too fine (only in case of emergency e.g. if bluetooth keyboard is not repsonding)
... Touch screen mounted to the wall in the rec room, which I use occasionally when rehearsing for live shows. Here it is much better just to use your fingers to arm tracks, jump to markers and do all the transport interaction... mind you, even here you can't live without a mouse (just try to go into preferences and change something ... or try adjust a few faders by 0.2 dB) ... and your arm gets really tired after a while ...

Currently, I would not want to swap my control surface for one or two touch screens; I wouldn't want to be looking at these bright screens all the time, I would have to swap the desk underneath to make ergonomics work ... and what apparently no one else cares about: I wouldn't want two perfectly flat reflective surfaces right underneath my face when mixing ...

We lost the old screen-space efficient 8.x interface to make Multitouch possible, and now nearly nobody uses it?

I love my touchscreen. Not for moving faders. That part is hard to do accurately .
For navigating and button pushing it's awesome.

There was a lot of discussion on this thread I started when I bought mine:

My grandkids think every screen is a touchscreen. Including the TV, the LCD display on the synthesizer and my glasses. What is it about glass, which despite having no texture, is as irresistible to touch as a bunny's fur?

Personally, I don't care for touchscreens. They're just too imprecise for almost everything. Maybe if my fingers were smaller...

I've no interest in touch screens. I want my monitor in its usual position which is just out of arm's reach and at eye level, i.e. pretty much the worst place for a touch interface to be. But maybe if I ever had a computer purely for music use and had enough space where I could afford to take up most of the desk area with an inclined monitor, I'd consider it.

I am using the v-700 mixer with sonar. I find it hard to imagen that a touchscreen will ever replace the solid feeling of faders and knobs. But even with the v-700 a lot of mouse and keyboard is involved.

I've tried Sonar using touch and I went back to mouse instantly. I have to admit that the screen I was using was a bit to small for it to probably be ideal. Could be better with larger screens.
