  • How to? Insert silence ..

Simple question, I hope -- how to add a few seconds silence at the end of an audio clip?

I make audio tracks by running a bunch of midi tracks through a bunch of VSTs (kontakt).     Frequently I want to work with a section, rendered using "bounce to tracks ".     But then I want to modify that audio 'clip' by inserting a few seconds of silence at the end of it, so that I can use the underlying audio file and not have an abrupt ending.    I can't just make the bounce selection longer, in some cases, since the music continues with material not wanted in the selection.     In order to add silence I've been calling up an external sound editor just for this little purpose ... surely there's a way within sonar?

[edit]
btw, dragging out the end of the clip, hitting just the right spot and finding the blue bar, makes it appear that there is silence at the end, but it isn't saved into the audio file ... I suppose one could rebounce that clip, dragged out, into yet another clip .. but again there is probably a better way.

Did an internet search, apparently this has been asked before:   http://forum.cakewalk.com/Insert-Silence-m2011111.aspx

Got the usual crew (different folks, 5 years ago) giving workarounds and criticizing the OP for his/her abyssmal ignorance, but essentially saying that insert silence and set to zero are not Sonar functions.   I used it all the time in Samplitude, SoundForge ...

I usually just drag the last played clip out for what ever time I need.  I find this very helpful when the last playing clip is midi which allows the synth time to play out the note with proper fade.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, that works at the end of the piece,  but it doesn't help when I want a recording of WIP, stopping somewhere in the middle of the piece  ... the midi notes continue, so if the selection is extended, I'll be getting more notes ...

Dragging the clip out, then using "bounce to clips" on that dragged-out clip works, but then I get yet another audio file to wade through (just did it .... #400 from this one project).     What I'm seeking, I guess, is a destructive edit of a clip's audio file ...

Wouldn't / shouldn't

Arm the track, record few seconds of silence, bounce to clips or tracks

work?

It doesn't work with MIDI, obviously, but it should work with audio.

Have you tried dragging out the length of your midi tracks prior to rendering?

I think a video I made holds a concept that will help you. It is in this thread http://forum.cakewalk.com/Navigation-Workflow-Tips-m3220999.aspx

The concept that I think will help you starts at about 6:45. Just apply those concepts to your clip. You can export or bounce your clip, track, or entire project. You can have as much silence as you want.

If you have any questions on how to apply these concepts to your specific situatio/need, let me know and I will help.

Thanks Charles, I'll take a look.

Perhaps I'm not clear, having again gotten a suggestion to extend the midi clip:  this is for work in the middle of a project, the midi stuff goes on and on but for the moment I want a rendering only of a certain portion.   And I'm not concerned with preserving reverb trails or anything like that ... just want to do what I said: add silence at the end of an audio track, and do it fast.

Anything that involves 're-bouncing' the resulting audio is necessarily a many-second process ... while in samplitude, just for instance, I can "insert silence" with a simple click ... half a second and it's done.   And of course, recording the silence in real time, then adding it to a clip, then re-bouncing ... sure it will work, but the time commitment is long enough that I would get distracted and come to the forum here and ask how to do it.

You could record silence to create a clip that you place in your media library.  Just before you bounce, whip that silent clip out and place it at the end, stretching/shrinking as required.

Now when you bounce, this will be included.
