Hey all, I Need Help setting up Akai (pro) mpk25 exhausted all searches on the web.

please post a detailed list of settings for all of us Akai MPK installers, you will be a rockstar in our eyes.

Please specify if you have actually set this unit up or not - as it defies convention

Akai has a "Sonar preset" word on the street is that it does not work - didnt for me
Sonar x1b has an Akai mpk49 in the dropdown - i tried it to no avail (for transport)
i have tried every midi config - and then some
found this and attempted it  -fail
http://www.indabamusic.com/people/872915734/blog/8228-configure-the-akai-mpk25-to-work-with-sonar-8-5-

Akais website and installation disc have NO SUPPORT for Sonar yet there is a Sonar preset hmmmm.

I cant seem to get the transport buttons to work - they are not detected while trying to "map"
-IE
click on green box - press button - still waits and sees nothing.

the device install lists the device as USB audio device and USB Audio Device (2)
why on earth cant they get it to be named correctly -?
as well, which device does what - in - out - or moreover why multiples?

I am ready to get a different controller that "snaps" right in - any suggestions ?

Thanks a LOT!
EOE

I don't own that keyboard.. BUT how does it do the transmit buttons? I mean you can tell sonar to use MME buttons for the transport i.e. play / rewind.. have you gone into that and tried to do a midi learn?

as for say ACT.. have you also set it up as a generic control. then gone into the ACT settings, see if it's listed , then do the ACT learn side of things for synths?

I know there is an editor for some of the Akai stuff, but even if Akai downloaded the demo of 8.5 they could get the bulk of it working for X 1 .

sorry I can't be more help, but in most cases you setup the transport and ACT/synth controlling as 2 separate things.

endoverend, I've got a basic setup of the MPK25 in which the transport buttons work.  You may already know some of the steps below, but I'll go ahead and list them just in case.

First, the Akai MPK25 internal Sonar preset does not work as you suspected.  You'll need to create new new preset within the MPK25 for Sonar X1.  I set mine up under preset 16 and named it Sonar X1 (brilliant, no? ).

Next, in Sonar under Preferences/MIDI/Control Surfaces, add an ACT MIDI Controller selecting the appropriate MIDI devices for the Akai MPK25.  Apply and close out the preferences windows.

Then under the ACT Module on the Control Bar, make sure the control surface you just added is selected and then click on the setup button to bring the ACT settings window up.  You'll need to create a new Preset, so start with the MPK49 preset and then after you make the following changes, you can rename it to MPK25 and then save it under the new name.

Under the Controllers tab, here are my settings for the each of the cells in R row, S row, Shift-B row and B row:
R1-R8 I have setup to control volume utilizing the Bank A, K1-K12 rotaries on the MPK25.
S1-S8 I have setup to control pan utilizing the Bank B, K1-K12 rotaries on the MPK25.
Shift B1-B8 I have setup to control movement between track groups and individual tracks.  (I use the S4 button on the MPK25 as my Shift Button.  However, you can use the pads to the left of the LCD or any other button that transmits a MIDI signal for a Shift button if you like.)
Finally, I setup B1-B8 to control transport functions.

Under the Options tab is where you tell Sonar what function to assign to each rotary or button.  For Rotaries and Sliders (although it says sliders, you can still use the rotaries on the MPK25 since it doesn't have any sliders) you only need to select the overall function of Volume and Pan respectively.  For B1-B8 and Shift B1-B8, you;ll need to select the specific function for each using the dropdown windows.

It's probably best to start with the Options tab and then go back to the Controllers tab to MIDI learn each button or rotary cell.  You'll have to click on the function name of each cell heading then move the rotary or press the button you want to control that specific function assigned to that particular cell to let ACT know which rotary/button to use.  For MIDI learning the Rotaries and Sliders functions, to keep things simple, Bank A rotaries on the MPK25 assign to the Rotary row and then Bank B rotaries on the MPK25 assign to the Sliders row.

Finally, be sure to first Shift learn whichever button you want to use as the Shift button before assigning the Shift B1-8 row.

I hope this helps.  I apologize for my wordiness.

It can be tedious to set the MPK25 up, but once you have it setup, it's definitely worth it.  It's a great little controller.

Hey , Thanks for the replies.

I am taking the Akai back to the store as there are no easy setups ready to go with the unit.
it is like "making your own bicycle" - i would rather buy one already made and tested.

very lame that Akai did not make a ready to go preset for Sonar -their loss.

Its all about ease of use to me and the Akai mpk25 is NOT user friendly.
  - i will buy the cakewalk controller and have it snap right in, what was i thinking?

in the akai menu set it to transmit midi and MMC. and set up sonar's control surface with MMC to control your transport and set another setting with ACT so you can use the knobs and faders . You should have no problems.

I'm not the author of the original question but "THANK YOU". I just purchased a B-Stock MPK25 from the guys at Sweetwater for next to nothing. Their customer support is AWESOME so buying B-Stock isn't an issue.

I just received it yesterday. I have a good Macro understanding of midi but my Micro understanding is weak at best. Your reply to the original question helps more than you can imagine.

Most Appreciated!

You might want to check out AZ Low in this thread - http://forum.cakewalk.com/Utilities-for-use-with-Sonar-m3238243.aspx

It's an alternative to ACT that I find more straightforward and frankly more dependable. I have an MPK Pro 88 and ACT was giving me fits. For me, AZ Low is a better choice. YMMV.
