gmpI don't want a situation where I can't use Run as administrator when I need to, so let me know what your suggestions are.

I still think it's easiest just to add Desktop to the Media tab's drop-down menu. This also makes it easy to drag files to the desktop.

Thanks for sharing that. Actually I've never used the Media Tab before. I almost never drag from the desktop. 99% of the time I'm dragging from a mapped network folder that's on my Win 7 computer. Do you think I can add that folder to the Media tab? And if so will I still have the same problem of the files not being able to be imported into Sonar if I'm using Run as administrator?

Shoud be able to add any reachable folder to the browser.

WRT the question about registry hacks, there is no one solution. Each plug-in that requires elevated privileges is a separate discovery process. It should be the manufacturer's responsibility to publish the information since they choose not to update the software.

In my other post about the general error I was getting, there was a suggestion to start using Run as administrator. So that's why I started trying to use that, not for any plugin issues

http://forum.cakewalk.com...ont-save-m3255348.aspx

I also have another recent post

http://forum.cakewalk.com/64-bit-Platinum-cant-find-plugins-from-old-projects-m3253603.aspx

This is the one that I'm having plugin problems and wanting to do a registry hack if necessary. essentially I have some 32 bit plugins that load fine in Platinum 64 bit with BitBridge, but Sonar doesn't find them when loading old projects. I get the missing plugins window.

I understand that 64 bit Platinum has this problem with all 32 bit plugins from old projects. This is why a registry hack may be the only solution to tell Sonar "no these plugins are not missing, you're looking in the wrong place". I need some guidance on a registry hack before attempting that.

Running as administrator masks configuration issues. Some you may have created, some are created by unmaintained software. Elevating privileges is easier than sorting out permissions issues.

I would suggest calling support for the "General Error" problem.

When it comes to relying on old unmaintained software, you are on your own. The registry hacks generally involve altering the permissions in a parts of the registry so the plug-ins can write to them. There is no single solution. It depends on the plug-in. There is a larger problem relying old software. At some point in time, the software may just stop working entirely. The products are already out of support and not maintained.

So for now you must run as administrator and deal with things like the copy probem or disable UAC and deal with the security implications. The media browser should be able to handle the clip copy issue.

I like the way you added Desktop to that list. I tried to add a network folder and couldn't figure out how to do it. Can you explain how you added desktop?

When you have it say on the 'Audio Library' click the Folder icon with the up arrow that is beside it on the left hand side, and keep going up until you can get to the desktop, (or where ever you want to go to), then click the save button on the right hand side of the drop down, then you will have 'Desktop' (or whatever) in your drop down list

Thanks, that was easy. I think the reason it was hard before is because I moved all Cakewalk Content to my D drive and the names showing up in the media window did not know where I moved Cakewalk content. So clicking on those names just gave me an error message.

Since this was the very first time I've opened the media browser, when I rebooted the next time I had my regular folder tree in there and it was easy to navigate to the folder I wanted. The save button tip was helpful once I found the right folder. What's really cool is I have an FX folder on my D drive that I also put in the media browser. Now I can do a search for "wind" and see all the FX that have that in the name - pretty cool.

Thanks,

Yes it is nice, I didn't know you could do it let alone how to do it a couple of minute before I posted the above. I read it, and seen Mr Andertons pic, and said to myself, "that would be handy, I want that" then spent a couple of minutes figuring it out, and there you go

The problem has to do with using a process with a lower security level (Windows Explorer) to pass a file to one with higher security level (Sonar running as administrator). That is considered a particularly dangerous behavior, because it opens opportunities for malware to exploit the system. The same thing will happen with Notepad run as administrator. A drag attempt using Windows Explorer with the sign on user account's security level will fail to load a text file into Notepad run as administrator. At the same time using File Open in the elevated Notepad will allow you to navigate to the file and open it in Notepad with no problem, because by default the Administrators Group has read access to just about everything. If Sonar as administrator opens the file itself, it uses its read privilege to do so without encountering the prohibition against taking it from Windows Explorer at the user account level.

I expect you would find no problem using Sonar's built in explorer (Media Browser) to locate the file, just as you would find no problem using Sonar's File>Import>Audio to load it. The safest and easiest answer is not to disable UAC, but just not to drag and drop. I never encountered this problem myself because I never use Windows Explorer drag and drop to pass files to an application. I generally keep my stuff buried deep in the file system, and by the time I go to the trouble of opening a Window with both the application and the file visible at once to set up the drag, it is just easier to navigate there from within the application. I also find that traversing the system in this manner imposes a discipline on my mind that helps me avoid losing track of where in the file system things are. All open windows look pretty much the same. File Import also gives me better control within Sonar on where exactly I want the imported stuff to be placed.

I have quite a few folders listed in my browser, some of which do not contain any data which I want to see in the browser.

So how do you delete these folders? The little 'X' at the top right doesn't seem to do anything.
