Hi,

I'm struggling a lot. I'm trying to add sustain to a midi files. I found a plugin called sustainfix from tencrazy.com. And it added sustain but the sustain lasts way too long.

So what I'm basically looking for is a way to add sustain to a midi track and to be able to choose how fast the sustain fades away. Is it possible?

Thanks for any help. I have a lot of midi files. I recorded them with my keyboard but I didn't record the sustain. The sustain I used is the same for all notes. I have a VST I'll use to record the midi files, Kontakt 5 and galaxy vintage D as piano. I was looking if I could add the sustain effect there too but haven't found out how either.

Hi Mike-

There aren't really degrees of "sustain" in a MIDI context. A MIDI sustain pedal, for example, is either up or down, off or on and typically sends CC #64.  A value under 64 is off; anything over 64 is on. In other words, it's a switch. I'm not sure what you mean by "how fast the sustain fades away" if you're talking about MIDI sustain. There's no such thing as "fading" a MIDI sustain; either the notes are being held or not.

Oh, and welcome to the forum!

Hi Mike-

I replied to you, but my post has disappeared. If it doesn't show up soon, I'll repost.

Some synths respond to controller 72 which is release time. Have you tried this?

Off-topic, but that happened to me 20 mins ago in another thread.

On-topic, have you considered running the MIDI through a vst (Kontakt) and using audio effects?

Thanks to all for helping. The release time did the trick!

It may be well known to others ...but incase you don't know MrSustain ...

I found a way to toggle sustain, without a pedal, from the PRV  Controller Pane the other day ...

Further controls too ... but not 72.

The release time referred to is the release time of an ADSR or similar envelope generator controlling the volume envelope - how long a sound takes to fade once the key is released. On some synths the release time can be controlled using MIDI CC 72. On others it's a different controller, and on some you have to turn the relevant knob yourself.
