Yup - there was NO need for the liquid cooling.  I just tossed it on in a flurry of giddy spending, as this was the most extreme computer I had ever built.

I do like how cool it does run, nonetheless, but for anybody considering a new computer, I would say get it if you have money left over and want it, but make sure you get all of the other stuff you want first, including things like upgrades to Melodyne, pizza, that new batch of Pineapple Express, whatever.  :)

I like a small closed loop liquid radiator.  A LOT less weight hanging off the motherboard and it takes its air directly from the cool outside instead of heating the CPU with the in-case air (the graphics card is usually right next door).
Good overall case airflow is necessary as well.

They look pretty neat too.

Now, I NEVER said I didn't LIKE it :)  I only said I didn't need it.

Now I got to get me a truck load of those fancy led case lights, and maybe some hydraulics, some new rims, and some fuzzy dice...

I was under the impression that you were referring to real liquid cooling, not the toys I'm talking about.  The real stuff has to be a hobby and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone (or those fill-your- computer-with-liquid aquarium/computers).

...and I wasn't arguing with you

i don't mind that you guys hijacked my thread as it makes really interesting reading :-)

as regards the original problem: cakewalk meanwhile contacted me to provide the crashing project, which i uploaded a few days ago - will keep you guys posted when I get a reply ...

meanwhile i will refrain from any further changes to the system because
  • (A) there's a new thread almost every day now about a corrupted project or not functioning project in X3 (some of which were created with X2) and
  • (B) my system has been really stable since X3c (no crashes while working) - there's just the fear that remains that the project won't open next time ...

I apologize for participating in the hijack and was laughing for the same reason... we got off track BIG time there!

I am very concerned about the OP, and for the same reasons you mentioned... too many threads popping up on this and the fear of "when will it happen to me??"

A real "root cause" would be wonderful to know.

And it's always a different reason, often away from Sonar.

There's just the fear that remains that the project won't open next time ...

That's why you should always keep up to date everytime you install new software (drivers http://forum.cakewalk.com..ver-Boost-m2928792.aspx
firmware, windows update, sonar itself). Software by definition is unstable. 99% of the time updates make your system more stable (nowadays), and when (in the extreme occasion) it makes it worse you should always be in a position to roll back from a backup.

Glad it's working for you, if it happens again and Sonar does not find a reason please please disable your overclocking if only for a few months to see what happens...

Cheers...

Alex, I'm starting to wonder about the CPM you earn for advertising for driver updates. You're starting to sound like you sell those for a living ;-)

Didn't you just upgrade to X3 only 3 days ago? Problems described in this thread weren't instantaneous. I was working long hours with X3b and X3c before this problem first surfaced, and now after many additional hours they have not reappeared, yet it has happened twice to me and with similar symptoms to others ...

I do not want to be the devil's advocate but the same thing may yet have to happen to you. If it does, we can review all recent auto-updates which may have caused this since the common denominator (which would be the DAW software) has already been ruled out, hasn't it ????

OK rather than update your system and drivers etc I suggest mind melding with the CPU and software ;). Best do nothing! If it's broke don't fix it :)
I mean you can backup and roll back right?

The same things BTW have happened to me (often in fact) and I have always found solutions. And where upon I could recreate an issue ruling out third party possibilities I would log the issue with Cakewalk. Once (with X1C) I had to wait for X1D, after I could clearly reproduce an issue.

Actually I spent a whole day fixing instability with X3 when I installed it, it turned out to be third party drivers (something that wasn't happening with X2). You don't seem to even want to explore this possibility.

YES - I have dealt with corrupt projects and crashing in the past.
But what do I know :) I must be lazy ;)

(the reason why I have a stable system is because I get my hands dirty).

And Robert please get this out of your head, just because the symptoms are the same, it doesn't mean it is the same. In fact most likely it isn't going to be the issue. You are looking at this far too simplistically. I've seen you posting in multiple threads (with similar symptoms to yours) trying to get people to look at your issue, and most of these threads (not all) seem to be resolved.

Anyway good luck only so far one can go...
