I created a more compact list of all the new features, their descriptions and the videos showcasing them (as well as some of my own descriptions based on the vids) and posted it all here...

Some cool stuff, Baker dudes. The MixRecall looks invaluable. Just wish I had some cash.

Which brings me to a question that probably won't and from a marketing standpoint shouldn't be answered but how long is the $149 intro upgrade price going to last? Unless I pull a proverbial rabbit out of my arse it's doubtful I will be able to upgrade until the late summer.

Cheers.

So, being an owner of the TOP of the line Sonar Producer Xe, what is the upgrade cost to the new Top of the line Platinum?

As far as I can tell, the $149 upgrade is ONLY for the "professional" or mid-range product.

Pricing for Platinum is $500 (nearer $600 out here) so I would hope there is a significant rebate for people who already have invested in the flagship product already.

The full upgrade to Platinum (the top tier version) for you would cost $149. It apparently will be going up to $199 at some point.

Cheers.

Through January and possibly February (the end date of the promotion has not been specified), the first year for SONAR Platinum is $149 for X3 Producer owners. After that it will be $199.

Well if you guys are happy to pay for features that we dont even have a clue about yet thats fine by me, I don't ask or expect everyone to agree with me you have the right to vote with your wallet just like I do.

Greeny, please read this page https://www.cakewalk.com/Products/SONAR/Whats-New

Ryan, this is a one time situation. You are announcing coming features at the cusp of the changeover, and you will need to have a constantly updated list of features of the then current version to entice new customers, but once launched into the membership addiction cycle, someone who has invested his money will not be able to realize he no longer thinks Sonar is worth the price compared to the competition, without losing a considerable investment. The driver for innovative features will be competition with other DAWS, but that will be less of a driver since you will have a bunch of locked in customers who will need to wait as long as a year to bail out. And once they bail out, they will presumably have to pay full retail (not upgrade) to get into the next version that does make sense to them. They will not. You will have permanently lost a customer from the chains of the system. Your previous generous upgrade policy with down-pricing near the end of a version lifespan was a much better deal for many of us.
btw Nothing in the new features listed offers me anything I would pay a dime for, but I am probably not your typical user.

Aw, shucks. I'm getting the feeling we won't be seeing many if any sale prices either because it will essentially be a perpetually new product.

A Beep can still dream tho... or stop being such a broke turd. Whichever. lol

Cheers, scook.

Its not a subscription - its two different payment options.  You can either:

Pay $149 and own the software outright (and get whatever other content they chose to release over the next 12 months).
Pay $14.95 per month for 12 months and at the end of 12 months own the software outright.

Their choice of the word "Membership" is very telling here - think X2 content club for the 12 months of updates.

Nice and simple. It seems their is no drop out facility as is the case with ( for example ) UNREAL ENGINE game dev app. With unreal you pay €19 per month. Pay for it on month 1 - install the full app. Drop out on month two. You can use away the software for ever. BUT you will not get any updates. How ever you can drop back in for another month - say month 6 and the software will update - drop out again for a while, but now you have the updated version from month 6 on your computer to use for ever.

I think with new Sonar it is a dwardzala says - Either pay $149 for a year and OWN the full software up to the version at the end of that year. OR pay $14.99 per month from the get go BUT you will not own the software until you pay for 12 months at $14.99.

Once a year of paying and ownership is up the whole thing starts again with another $199 per annum or $19.99 per month. If you drop out of the monthly payment option at any time LESS THAN A YEAR you lose the newest version and revert back to the version you had at the end of year 1 ..

Thats my reading of it.

brconflictFor the time-being, however, If I could just export/import those Mix Recalls to other Projects, that would be handy enough. Would save me a few hours each time I start a new mix session with a whole new band/artist. I could mix down one song to taste, and then, rather than use that as a post-taste template (a sweaty process for me), I could simply grab all the Mix-Recall mixes from that session and choose which one to start with in the next song/Project.

This would be a great feature!

For these Mix Recalls to work wouldn't you need to have exactly the same setup (number of channels, busses and same effects) anyway? Isn't it easier to just save your preferred mix as a track template to start up the new project with. Or save it as a project template?

Project templates are so limited for this. You really only get one shot at it. What I want, is a feature, where you have 12 songs, and have completely mixed them all. After that, the artist decides they want the bass to sound radically different, or want you to change reverb settings for the vocals. With a PSG, assuming you've got a few PSGs set up in a Project, and the other 11 songs are contained in this PSG, you could click a single button in the song/Project you made the changes to, and those changes can (selectively, depending on how the PSG is set) update those changes to the other 11 songs without even opening them! Would this be cool? I believe it can be done.

Changed the post...that section didn't appear when I clicked on an earlier link...must have been a page loading issue. I can see now it is $149 for an upgrade (introductory) price.

Looks great and as usual I'm in, love the subscription idea.

2 questions.

1.Does this mean that X5 will be a staggered release or is it just that the updates will be come in smaller updates rather than the usual service pack style?

2.Is there improved OMF Support and improvements on the video capabilities?
