This is a far better solution than having hardware dongles like some software mandates.

This is nonsense. You're talking about copy protection on a product that is being given away fro free. Why should it even enter the discussion.

What happens if we don't want to be part of the collective and simply use what we paid for?

Have to say that was the first thing that occurred to me. It does seem a bit pointless. I guess I'm happy that the software is still alive, but I see no compelling reason to install the "new" version yet and as it's 64-bit only that also gives me a problem with some 32 bit plug-ins that I still like to use, so I'll reserve full judgement until further info is forthcoming. So far, unless I'm missing something, I'm not seeing how the existing customers are being "valued" as it was suggested that they would be.

Then you have a decision to make. The activation process was part of the purchase. If you want to access the activation servers for you legacy products, you will need to have a BandLab account with the same e-mail address so they can migrate your data.

SO you're saying that all the legacy software is now managed by Bandlab and accessed via their servers? What about the stuff that's not a part of Cakewalk by Bandlab that is currently accessed via CCC?

...A cheap wireless dongle or a network cable can do the trick for just when you need to do an update or activation...

Wifi doesn't work well in my studio, due to obstacles between the room and the router. When I need a connection I temporarily connect via a 20 metre ethernet cable running along a corridor and diagonally across the lounge room. It's always a bit inconvenient and it's also a trip hazard, so I only ever set it up for short periods whenever there is no alternative, e.g. for authorizations. I prefer to download installation files on a different computer in another room.

You can use 32-bit plugins over the bit-bridge with CbB, as this is possible with the last Splat version. But I don't know, probably that is not what you want ...

Keep in mind the OP is asking for an alternate method to activate BandLab Cakewalk. You have your own thread on legacy activation. Let's keep the two separate.

Have you tried Powerline ethernet? They are quite reliable these days.
