Thanks for that link, KPerry. I'll read that next. The mklink seems to be a good thing for me to learn.

Paul     I like the idea that I am using the whole simple volume for these 3 drives and suppose I'll think 2Tb is small, soon! LOL

Whoa Michael !!!
"I like the idea that I am using the whole simple volume for these 3 drives"
Please tell me you have NOT partitioned 1 hdd into 3 separate drives? !
That most definitely is NOT a 3 drive system.
I'm sure the "experts" will chime in here, but that is not the "best" way to handle it.
It will "work", but that's not the same as 3 separate hard drives.

No, Tom. I went to a 3 drive setup in 2004 and even my laptop has 2 500gb 7200rpm's + an external 1Tb.
I have a WD 1Tb C, and 2 Seagate 2Tb drives as my CW Projects and Library drives. No partitions.

No I meant that I am NOT partitioning these 3 drives.
Michael

ps I understand the 3 drive concept, though I wonder how/if  SSD's are another story...... I don't have any SSD's, yet.

Lets now return to our "regular" program still in progress.
I'm sure that the DimPro installer will "prompt" you for the "Multisamples" location.
What it does not do is let you chose where the .prog files will go. (these are in c:\ProgramData\Cakewalk\Dimension Pro\Programs folder)
Interestingly enough the Session Drummer3 installer puts the "Programs" folder in "Content" on the Sample drive (if that's what you've instructed it to do; way to go Cakewalk!).
This is one of the "niggles" that I find with Sonar. Preferences>Folder Locations is a start... BUT
When presets, .prog files, keyboard shortcuts, instrument definitions, etc. are all on the C drive;
If (when) you have a melt down, you have been hosed!
That's not to say your data drive or where ever you are keeping things can't fail.
But one simple/central backup point would be nice (essential really I think).
users\me\roaming\blah blah, etc., etc., etc.; is just a bit (more than a bit for me) tedious.
Does anyone really back up; users\me\appdata\roaming\Cakewalk\Sonar X3 Producer; REALLY ??
Question for Dave; are you keeping your DimPro .prog files in with the Multisamples?

Whew! Michael, glad we sorted that!
I think that SSD's are great for anything that is "write once"; Sample Librarys obviously.
Audio drive, I don't think we are there yet, although I'm sure some are using them; to tempting not too!
Even the OS, unless you move the page file to a conventional hdd, I just think there could/can be "issues".
And I'm pretty sure that 32gb of RAM does NOT prevent Windows from pitching a file now and then to the
page file. That stuff is "hard coded" somewhere, and she goes "looking for Mama" anytime she gets "confused?".
But, I'm no expert!

No. Program files are less than 20 MB, versus 3.6 GB for the samples.

Total agreement about the wouldn't it be nice if everything was in one place sentiment. But that's not the Windows Way, and hasn't been since the invention of dynamic link libraries. I'm coming around to the idea that the best backup strategy is full-system snapshots to an external drive, augmented by DVD/CD backups for individual products.

I have been doing Acronis True Image backups to my external drive and intend to "migrate" that drive to this studio desktop. I don't even know if there is a Windows 8.1 backup. Is there? Hmmm.

Dave    if/when you back up your CW projects, do you bundle them or not?
Tom      I did think I might explore an SSD for the library drive, "down the road" a bit, as I have other studio items that I want sooner (or NOW!)

Michael, Go at least 1tb (ssd for the samples), I went with 500gb and that was not enough...
Dave,
"everything in one place sentiment. But that's not the Windows Way"
Preferences>File Locations; Cake (hopefully) can direct Sonar anywhere they want; can't they?
Whoops, got a little off topic, sorry

Thanks  Tom, that is what I was thinking and why I'm waiting. I have a short list of things I'd rather have first.

See http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/2673527 for the registry details for all bundled CW synths. As before, I suggest spending a few minutes and learn how mklink works. Some installers do not honor the registry hacks. All installers work with directory junctions.
