That's great news. It looks like a young and innovative company.

As long as they don't change Sonar into an iPhone app!

I'd be OK with them squeezing SONAR onto an iPhone.... as long as the Desktop Version remains the flagship. I'd also welcome a Mac version, too. And a Linux version. It is now their product, they can do whatever they want with it. Personally, the more they do with it, the better for all of us.

I likely won't buy a "Reissue" of the existing SONAR, since I have that already. If a new version offer compelling new functionality, I'm up for that - pending cost factors.

They deserve to make money on it, but they need to earn it.

It's important to note that they didn't buy the business. They only bought Cakewalk's IP, and therefore didn't take on any of Cakewalk's obligations.

Doesn't sound to me like all they bought was the IP

To me the news are great. Anyway I don't think they will honour lifetime update owners with lifetime support. But I ask myself if (1) our Cakewalk SONAR installed versions will now be updated to (lets suppose) "BandLab SONAR" with a bit of support, or (2) will stay as they are until they die like a foreign software, while BandLab works on a new 1.0 version. None of us have the answer. Lets await for more news.

For those who haven't noticed yet... Bandlab has introduced themselves (through what appears to be a new administrator for our forums) in a Sticky thread. It's definitely a good sign that they are keeping an eye on our discussions and sentiments.
They already guarantee that current Sonar owners will not need to pay any money to crossgrade to the new flagship product. That does seem to imply though that they do not intend to continue working on Sonar. Worst case, that new flagship may be some dumbed down online DAW with a lot less features than Sonar, but we'll have to wait and see.

"BandLab is the easy-to-use, all-in-one, social music creation platform."

They have their own DAW for online creation w/ your virtually-connected band.  Read more at:

and it is free (for the time being).  I can see them using SONAR and the Cake synths in their new on-line premium DAW, and they already have a pre-existing user base in SONAR-users.  No matter how much you slice it, it costs $150 a year for every user to update a DAW, so even if you have a life-time updates (BandLad bought the code, not company), they can pull you in for cloud storage and all your "friends" online.  And I bet they continue w/ a "free" version.  Altogether, it looks a lot better than SONAR just laying there, rest'n like a dead parrot.

Hey Rocsee, Meng here - definitely listening as much as we can!

Actually, the reason why I am not using the word SONAR when referring to the new flagship product is not because it's planned to be a different product, it's just that we're doing the legal/brand work to make sure calling it that would be the right thing to do and wouldn't cause any confusion in the market given the circumstances. You can take it to mean "future version of SONAR, or whatever it might be called".
