There is a setting in Preferences>Files at the last entry regarding asset files. Uncheck this and you should not be bothered by .asset files any longer.

My experiments with opening projects where these files existed, by using Save As new file name into a new project folder the file is saved with no .cwp.asset files added.

mudgel . . . nice find
Cakewalk must have thought it important enough to add this on/off feature, but I can't find it in the X3d "fixes and enhancements" documentation.

I guess mudgel is referring to the Preferences>File>Advanced>"Save Asset Manifests with Projects" line. Aslo answered at post below.

I found it by going through the preferences dialog when I installed x3d. I couldn't find any info in the reference manual or help file. Perhaps it's on the online help files. Then when I saw this thread I remembered having seen the setting and did some experimenting and voila as they say.

I have Gobbler installed so I don't know if this setting is only available because of that or whether it is in x3d by default.

Preferences>File>Advanced>"Save Asset Manifests with Projects" is not documented here:

So glad for this forum as I had no idea what this was and the online help forgot to mention anything about this.  I'm also glad I went right to X3d because not being able to turn off these files would have really pissed me off.

Thank you Mudgel for your solution:

"There is a setting in Preferences>Files at the last entry regarding asset files. Uncheck this and you should not be bothered by .asset files any longer."

It worked and I didn't expect it to be a simple uncheck mark.  The .asset files were something new since I was a Cakewalk Pro user until a few weeks ago when I needed to upgrade to Windows 8 which requires 3x or other Sonar products.

But what about the most likely few who may need to use those files for Gobbler or other future upgrades who like me just started using the new 3x after using .wrk files in Cakewalk Pro for years?  If these users didn't have hidden files activated then they wouldn't know the needed .asset files were even there.  And so since they didn't know the files were there and needed them but since they were hidden they moved the saved .cwp files to another folder one at a time for instance and then eventually deleted the old folder along with the hidden .asset files still in the folder then the .cwp files would not work correctly.

I guess my point is, these files are really small anyway and so the information could probably be easily saved within the .cwp files if the option in Preferences/Files/Advanced is checked.

Anyway thanks again for the fix.

Do you have any ideas how to make a saved .mid file default to the first channel (1) when the .mid file is opened the same as .cwp files?  All my .mid files when opened default to the last channel named "Cakewalk TTS-1" at the bottom of the channel list that is created by 3x when a .mid file is opened.  This is also something new that probably has a simple fix but I just don't know where the option is to stop 3x from creating this channel each time and then the curser going there each time a .mid file is opened instead of channel 1 at the top of the channel list.  The .cwp files default to the top (channel 1) which is how I need the .mid files to open also.

Thanks for any information you can provide.

If you go to sonar / edit / preferences / file / advanced / the bottom check box says save asset manifests with projects....deselect...problem solved !!!

Thanks Bakers for providing the option and thanks mudgel for finding it.  I'm glad to be rid of the .asset files.

My thoughts for future reference ...

It's my machine.  I'll decide whether or not I want to see hidden files.  I also have the right to voice my opinion when I think a software vendor is overstepping their bounds.

Rather than tell users how to configure their machine in ways that affect usage outside the scope of your application, or worse snark, smart-ass or otherwise attempt to belittle when you've made a bad decision - I suggest listening and paying attention to the concerns and preferences of those that buy and use your software by choice.
