Hi Dan, Thank you so much for listening to M81. It appears that I have done a good job with this. The only problem I am left with now is, what do I do next... I'm going to struggle to top this one, for sure. cheers andy

Just to echo previous comments, I think you may have outdone yourself with this one! Eight minutes of slowly evolving music over a constant rhythm bed aint easy to pull off... but you did it well. Everything is clear, the mix is wide, and your choice of synth tones is spot-on IMO.

I always like slowly evolving instrumentals Andy, it stems from listening to Tangerine Dream when I was about 13 . this is really well done, there's enough tension and release to keep the listener interested throughout. Sounds really nice through headphones too.

There is an vintage synth vibe going on here that if implemented wrong could have been unpleasant. That is not the case with your song. This is great. Its a wonderful evolving flow with just the right amount of mounting intensity.

Ah! A fellow TD fan I must admit, I do not listen to their stuff that much any more, and if I do, it's more than likely going to be Rubycon or Phaedra. Really enjoyed this track. Love the way it's always evolving throughout and never feels like a copy/paste add a part construction (I'm totally guilty of that all the time!!) Would be interested to know how you keep that kind of movement and change going through the drum tracks as that was one of the things that struck me when I listened. Chris - SquareSpiral

Hi Andy, well, i'm going to join the lovers of this track too. It moves along nicely, I have played it twice so far. Not too much, or too little instrumentation. It plays extremely well balanced on my studio KRK Rokit's, and also translates well on a pair of my Audio Technica ATH-M50's. The kick drum is never lost, or overpowering either, so I have to say, it is a very professional sounding mix, congratulations ! As for musical feel, well, and I hope I am not slated by you for this, but it has a 'feel' of Jean Michel-Jarre, certainly in tempo, but also arp pattern feel, but with instruments of ever so slightly different timbre and therefore time and place. However, I could honestly say that if I was given this to listen to, and told it was a JMJ track previously unreleased, then I would not have had any problem believing it to be true. Thanks very much, very inspiring.

SquareSpiral Really enjoyed this track.
Thanks Chris SquareSpiral (I'm totally guilty of that all the time!!)
Well... Same here really... I cut and paste stuff around and then go back and change bits here and there. Add/delete notes... Change velocities... And I'm always adding automation in order to keep things moving nowadays... It's the only way that I can keep my electronic stuff even slightly interesting SquareSpiral Would be interested to know how you keep that kind of movement and change going through the drum tracks as that was one of the things that struck me when I listened.
Ah... Yeah, I'm glad you noticed that Chris. I spent a lot of time on the drums... They kick in quite early, for one of my longer pieces, and carry on almost to the end, and although there is a general pattern for the kick and snare, it does change ever so slightly, to get a little busier in each part. I think the addition of the cymbals certainly helped and I'm glad I added them. As we said above, we cut and paste, but I always try to make it sound as though part have been "improvised," even though much of my work is programmed. I do play the odd lead part and record as MIDI, so that I can "fix" things, as I did for my Nessus tune. Thanks again for listening Chris cheers andy

The Kiosk Project Hi Andy, well, i'm going to join the lovers of this track too.
Hi Garry, I'm so glad you happened across my new tune and that you enjoyed listening to it. I've always been a fan of JMJ and I remember getting Equinoxe when it first came out in 1978. So, although I usually quote Tangerine Dream as my main influence, JMJ is up there too, along with early Kraftwerk. Mucho thanks on your comment regarding my mix... It has taken me a while to get there... I can only thank all the peeps here on this forum that have helped on a couple of tracks I uploaded earlier. If it wasn't for that, M81 would be up to its third revision by now LOL. As it is, I do appear to have nailed this one haha! Pretty much everyone here has said good stuff about the mix, although it might be still ever so slightly leaning towards the bass end cheers Garry, and thanks again for listening andy

It is really beautiful but, alas, for me, too long without a video reference or lead vocal or instrument. I will say it has a captivating sound. I am this way on all electronica. I love the instruments and the sound but as the Pogue said a while ago, my ADD kicks in. Since I am an old guy with roots deep in the blues and rock genres, I get a bit lost in some of the newer stuff because I need things to be in there to go the whole 8 minutes, though I did. NOW, buddy, about your intro post. STOP IT! You are a great musician and need not apologize or qualify yourself. You can lose listeners just because you told them to leave. They will know whether or not to "turn around and leave" or stay and listen. I haven't been familiar with your stuff cause I've been in and out for months. Your post seems negative and that isn't necessary. Of course, this is only my opinion, buddy. You have ventured out a bit with that other song you did and need to experiment on that too. You have talent, so, no more "warnings" on your posts! Of course, that is up to you. Keep crankin 'em, Andy!! (BTW, I can't say I haven't done the negative thing in the past and a very talented guy told me what I'm telling you. That was 7 years ago, gheeeees)

LOL! Thanks Julian, and thanks for dragging M81 back onto the Front Page evadianepug I am this way on all electronica.
Hi Warren I know you're not a fan of this stuff, so thanks for popping in here anyway and offering words of encouragement... I really appreciate what you are saying. I will be the first to admit that, yes, I am a negative person. At least on the surface. And it must get kind of boring when I come here to dismiss my own work before anyone even listens to it. I will try to take on board what you've said and be more positive in the future cheers andy P.S. Again, thanks to every one who has listened to M81, even if you didn't comment. I've been busy on SoundCloud doing the usual "networking" stuff and up to now M81 has accrued 243 plays, 36 likes and 5 re-posts. I know I should be preoccupied with stats and what have you, but I just can't help it. And in the past 30 days I have accrued nearly 500 listens... I've been on SoundCloud for over two years now and in the last 30 days I have doubled my plays...

Hi Tony Thanks so much for listening and enjoying M81. The video isn't up to much... Andy, This is a great piece you have created and is quite serene and peaceful to listen to, yet moves along very nicely and slowly building to completion. A tad long, but when you are kicking back and your eyes are shut, you want a longer piece of music for the full benefit of the relaxation. Peace and Blessings, John
