MIDI Note Event Chase on Play

This is a good example for rather small changes that make working with Sonar much easier. Finally, you can start play back anywhere for midi instruments with key switches, and the key switches are applied (if they are still pressed).

Hi. I got to play with it yesterday for the first time, and I really like it. Makes quite a difference, I agree.

I love it.

It is something I have liked in some other Daws, and am so pleased it is now in Sonar. I no longer have to freeze tracks with sustained notes when I am working, which is great.

Platinum just keeps getting better and better.

Did you install the early access in CCC? If so, right click on SONAR and choose rollback to 2017.01 early access.

I want to be happy!

What is midi note chase? At first I thought it would highlight my notes in the PRV as play went along which would be nice, but no.

Is it the ability to start playback in the middle of a long sustained note and have that note sound?

TIA

Yeah but what would they call that ?
Note Chase II?

In my nsho, this "play note when it should" feature should never even been given a name.
Just, there, we fixed it.

I'd call it Active Note(s) Indicator

Incidentally, with Midi Chase, what actually happens when you start playback in the middle of a long midi note?
Does it initiate the attack part of the sound again (easy to program) or does it pick up to where the note might have evolved to (would make more musical sense but I can imagine this would be a real bugger to program)?

The note-on starts at the cursor location.  So, if the note is 4 beats long and the cursor is at beat 3, the duration that plays is only 1 beat.

Hope this helps,

That's exactly what I thought too. I was like: "Hey it isn't working!" I almost started a thread about it until I saw this one!

I do think the name is pretty weird. More like 'midi event tail reader'

It is theoretically impossible to program. I have made a mistake once, assuming most synth with random generators bind random sequence to the time line (like anyone does in science). That is possible, but no one is doing that for music.
In case of midi chase, that is not only that. Notes can influence each other, for example if currently sounded note was in legato with previous note, etc. So I guess the result is not worse the effort required, they will have to "dry run" the synth all the way from that note start till the current time line and still without warrantee it sounds correctly.

I don't know, the name made sense to me as soon as I heard it. It's "chasing" the note back to the start when you hit play.

I guess "MIDI note pickup" wouldn't be a bad name either.

In that case I guess you could think of it as the start of the note 'chasing' the playback head.

Note or controller chasing is what other DAWs call it, so it's fairly standard.

The first 3 books in "The Musician's Guide to Home Recording" series are available from Hal Leonard and http://www.reverb.com. Listen to my music on http://www.YouTube.com/thecraiganderton, and visit http://www.craiganderton.com. Thanks!
