Mark Wessels update
I emailed Mark yesterday to see if he was home from surgery, since he hadn't posted here about it yet. He is in indeed home, but in extreme pain. Here's how he put it: "It feels almost like someone put a rusty shovel in a fire and got it red hot, then swung it with all their might and buried the edge of the blade in me, and grabbed the nerves with fish hooks and pulled them out and scraped them with a cheesegrater...or a kind of sharp, burning pain." Just makes you want to go and get back surgery, doesn't it? I'm sure he'd appreciate a note or a good joke or something to pep him up in his recovery. Mark, get better soon! Your dry sense of humor is missed around here. :-)

Get well soon Mark... and don't even try to mess up that back for a few months. Take all the Physical Therapy seriously... but only what is recommended... avoid the extra pain is gain stuff. My Brother in law is a PT and ironically just had this surgery 2 years ago... he's doing great but found taking advice from another PT difficult. ;-). I had never known him to not have back pain... he's like a different person now. all the best, mike

At first when I read this I thought it was a comment from someone after listening to one of my song postings. Pain meds are your friend, Mark!!!! Just don't get too used to 'em...

Hang in there, Mark. If anyone says that they "feel your pain", I believe you're legally allowed to ensure that they do. If you're surrounded by caring family and friends, relax and let them care for you. Treasure their compassion and generosity while you heal. Cherish them as they tenderly meet your every need during your recovery. Then, see how long you can keep this going once you feel better. You may be able to ride this gravy train for some time. They may begin to suspect, but you can stretch this out for awhile if you're creative. In an unrelated bit of trivia, I'm beginning to suspect that Bapu really has been capable of applying his own ointment for the last few weeks.

Today is the first day I felt strong enough to surf the internet, so naturally I'm testing the shallow end first. Janet, thanks so much for checking with me. You're a true friend. I have family members who could care less of my status. I've only received a phone call from my brother in Costa Rica, and nothing from my other siblings, whom I called before the surgery to let them know. Reece, thanks for your PM. It has warmed my heart to know so many here have wished me well. I've had quite a few significant surgeries in my life, but this one is the most challenging to deal with. As for my description of the pain: "It feels almost like someone put a rusty shovel in a fire and got it red hot, then swung it with all their might and buried the edge of the blade in me, and grabbed the nerves with fish hooks and pulled them out and scraped them with a cheesegrater...or a kind of sharp, burning pain." , I have to apologize for that, but I thought it best to sugar-coat it for Janet, lest I gave her an accurate description of how bad it really was. I appreciate the friendship you have shown me (except Randy, of course) and wish I knew you all in "real life". Thanks my friends. P.S. I'll send a photo of the surgical incision with the 16 staples to anyone who wants one. Free.

Ahhhh.....so great to feel the love from you Mark. I've been doing some checking on the interweb, and apparently after a serious back operation, its recommended that you begin a series of abrupt twisting motions while holding 10 pound weights in each hand with your arms outstretched. These should be done while standing in stocking feet on a smooth hard surface such as vinyl or hardwood. Best wishes Randy

Place mats from the dining table scattered throughout the house. Toilet paper rolled off real and onto floor. (this was Sparky's doing. Other cat is too mature for potty humor). Most of the mail off the counter and on the floor. So not bad. They don't destroy things, they just like to rearrange a bit.

Glad to hear you're out, still praying for a speedy recovery. My cat looks just like the one in the beer box, I've been coming home from work to a similar mess as well. The toilet paper is more like confetti so isn't real useful after she's done with it. When I first walk in from work she starts running up and down the stairs making a sound that sounds like a baby crying. I offer her my coat sleeve and she just lays into it with both back and front claws as I'm petting her exclaiming "go on and get out of that cat devil" I think I'm being punished for the weather...

Thanks Steve. They are great friends Grant. But some of them do seem possessed most of the time. Today Sparky was showing off with his toy playing skills for the nurse that came by to change my dressing. She had cleaned the wound and was putting the new bandage on when she jumped and cried out "Sparky!!!". He had thrown one of his toy mice at her and it landed on her lap in the middle of the bandage procedure.
