Unbelievable - no way to now how this would have affected Cakewalks future, but surely it would have generated much needed positive buzz about Sonar and help heal it's perception issue - it might even have opened up some educational sales. Sad.

Will definitely check out overture, as it seems a very generous offer.

Interesting! Prior to Presonus purchase of Notion I was hoping Cakewalk would somehow integrate Notion. The second option was Overture that also seemed like a logical choice. It seems it wasn't that far away after all...

Thanks Don, that's a great deal!

Thank you for the insight, and offer. When Gibson stated they were going to pursue a position in the "consumer electronics" market I had a pretty good idea of what their problems stem from. A lack of understanding about the market they were in. Music production and CE have no direct correlation (despite the fact that music production creates content) The fact that Phillips was mentioned indicated they are no more informed of the market they are aiming for, than they were about how to let Cakewalk succeed and make them money (and no, not at the level of a highly successful CE line). The last year with Cakewalk had me saying, this is what intelligent software development is about, I was truly impressed and talking it up to every connection I had.

The consumer electronics market is saturated, Phillips is a marginal company at best and to think that getting into that market is a saving grace indicates a poor understanding of marketing and business strategy. Oh, and a half billion in debt.... 'nough said.

Thanks for the update, the offer and the humanity,
Kevin, a very happy, and yet disappointed SONAR user. :)

Got it, was good value at first blush. Runs laggy as all get out on my very well specced setup. And it's the only program that does.

Downloaded the demo about an hour ago to have a play with it.  This is an excellent product and would have gone a very long way to dealing with the Sonar "Staff" issues blighting that side of an otherwise superb DAW.  Oh, well, all too late now.

Anderton
Well I had started a thread about this, and Karyn wanted to merge it with this one, but it disappeared. It figures.

Anyway, Don is the real deal and so is Overture. This is what I was alluding to when I posted that I was pursuing a notation solution. I'm sorry it didn't work out.

It is still unfathomable that embedding even a liability free / lightweight version of Overture into Sonar was dismissed by Gibson.

In light of these recent revelations, I want to apologize to the Cakewalk staff (if any of you are reading) for any implicit or explicit blame that nothing was being done on the Staff View front.  I can only imagine how the Bakers must have felt being so close to a solution and not being able to say anything about it.

I may be blowing things out of proportion, but I believe this could have done well for Sonar, maybe even change some minds.

I decided after X3 that I wouldn't upgrade anymore unless I saw some SV love.  In retrospect, I have mixed feelings.  Sonar has a unique collection of features, which after looking around, are not all available in any single DAW.

Even though I had just bought Notion during the Black Friday sale, I tried the demo of Overture 5 yesterday and was impressed enough that I bought it.

The addition of even some of Overture's technology to SONAR would have been the icing on the Cake(walk) for us Staff View users.  Thank you to Don Williams and the Cakewalk staff for their efforts and thank you Don for your extremely generous offer.

Thanks again,

I think the biggest revelation for me is that the Bakers outright lied about the acquisition by Gibson. It was plainly stated here on the forums that Cakewalk would still be in full control of Sonar sales and development. Obviously, that wasn't true. How many other bad decisions were made by Gibson?

Got Overture 5. For $50 bucks it's a steal. When I write in midi notation is the only thing I can work in. Reaper and Sonar notation editing are both lacking. Thanks to Sonic Scores for the offer.

After about three hours of playing with this today I've decided that, for $50 (about £37 in real money), it's got to be a bargain !  I think I'm going to get a lot of use from this.  Thanks for the special offer, Don, much appreciated.

I was talking to Don a lot yesterday while setting up the thread for him and moping the forum floors. I asked about proof of ownership, redeemable codes and such.  The original "cyber week" $75 deal expires today,  I'm convinced he told me until 1st Jan for the Sonar Special....   I just can't find where he said it..    I've not had much sleep since Monday.

I've been using Musescore on and off for a couple of years now and Overture for about three hours today. I have no experience of Notion though so can't comment on that.

MuseScore's big plus is of course that it is open source freeware. I find it's interface to be a bit clunky and, cosmetically, basic. The facilities for playback of your compositions is also very basic, being more or less restricted to Soundfont player.  I would have to say that the Overture interface is a lot easier to find your way around. This is partly because of the superior layout and, as much as it shouldn't matter, is nicer to look at !  I have found that the actual note input process is easier than MuseScore, with a wider range of options and more control over the page appearance. Replay is far superior to MuseScore- you can scan and use your VSTs for this. I have been able to use my Garritan Personal Orchestra 5 VST as the playback device, including the keyswitching facilities. For example, in the background you can set up the pizzicato articulation symbol to automatically insert the pizzicato keyswitch each time you insert the symbol on a stave - cool ! There is also a reasonable level of MIDI editing available including a PRV view and a basic but functional audio mixer for the playback facilities; VST effects can be used if you need them. However just don't expect something with the degree of sophistication of SONAR/CUBASE/Logic etc.

As it's free, MuseScore is clearly going to be good value !  The full price of $249 for Overture is probably more or less justifiable in view of it's considerably superior facilities; at the current sale price of $75 on the Sonic Scores website (at the time that I'm writing the post) it's a bargain. At the $50 "Sonar special" price it's a no-brainer, assuming that price is still available, of course.

Well I'm trying it out and really loving it!  Very nice - and linear view with the midi on the staff is awesome.  Been looking for that for a long time....

But I get this crash, twice (below) one on "linear view" and the other during selecting a layout.  Now I may have been banging on it pretty hard not knowing what I'm doing so hopefully it's rare.

Well it's working okay for me, but my gripe is that I can't access my East West Gold Symphonic Orchestra samples. I can locate my Ivory II piano samples in the browser, but can't play them. I've read that some sound sample programs will work with Oveture but not all....apparently they are still working on it and to expect it in the future, I don't know when though. It is a cool program, I imported a 5-6 track midi file and it plays it perfectly. I'm liking it !!!!

I should update that their support appears phenomenal.  Already an email from Don asking about the crashes.
Also, after researching - I've changed my audio device to my RME ASIO and have had (as yet) zero crashes now (and I'm banging on it pretty hard).

I got tired of the crashes and uninstalled. I never had v4, but picked this up some time ago when v5 was in beta. It's been one on-going crash fest. Now, I can't even get to the point where I can try it. It scans VSTs on startup and crashes during the scan.

I am testing the demo today.  Setup audio with my ASIO device and it runs fine.

Scanned my VST2 folder and most of them were found OK.

The GM player works well, and Overture does a very nice job of importing MIDI files.  I have a few GM oldies on my drive that imported into a score easily.

I also tried replacing the GM player instruments in a song with SampleTank 3 instruments.  You can create a multi in ST3 with the instruments loaded that you want, then go through your track list in Overture and assign the output devices to ST3.  Select 'Software Instrument' as a new instrument output for the first track.  Then when adding additional tracks be sure to select 'Existing Instrument', otherwise a new instance of ST3 will be used.  Line up your MIDI channels in both and off you go!

I think I am going to get this!
