Impressive perhaps a little left biased but I know the original was also.

Always liked George H and this song. I was only listening through laptop speakers, the vocals are coming through very nicely.

You went for the hard pan like the beatles :-) 5%... We're headed there... Margret Thatcher, "the iron lady" famously said, "The trouble with Socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money." She hit the nail right on the head.

I like it, it feels like it wants to be wetter? And I may pull that cow bell down a bit. Who produced this? Christopher Walken?

My favourite Beatles song!  Excellent job on this one gentlemen!!!  That panning took my by surprise but if I remember this number (it has been a while since I heard the Beatles do it) it was panned something just as you did.
    Great job!

    Nice job on the cover.

I picked up a copy of the Beatles remastered box set with all their stuff..... I can listen to it when I'm listening on speakers that are close together. That radical panning is horrible IMHO.... I heard that someone in the studio doing the remastering mistakenly sent it out like that to the replicator and it wasn't supposed to be that way.

Your version sounded good as I was listening to speakers set 12" apart.

Re: Michael (Spacey) and Warren (evadianepug) cover TAXMAN 2014/09/05 14:05:55 (permalink)
Since I don't hang here I appreciate the feedback though I feel I should say the only
reason I did this is because I was asked. I was in the middle of a guitar build but as Warren said, I enjoy doing
Beatles tune with him and did explain when I got the way he liked it I was done. I was sure if he posted it there would be plenty of great suggestions for improvement but I was not going to be spending time with it.

Unlike and like Bat...I have a lot of complaints lol.

Paul did all the guitar work, George was pissed I guess- about taxes and asked for help. Well I didn't take the time to work out his "feel"/ accents on the first little bit of the lead. It's the same notes just not the right feel.
All the parts were done in "one takes" so I wasn't going to go back and patch the goofs. One may notice there is a bass note note missing a one beat...stands out like wart. Oh well.

I complained to myself that I didn't own many more different types of guitars. I think the guitar parts suck.
I complained about using Guitar Rig 5....haven't recorded in some time now and all of the software guitar stuff I tried all sucked. I wish Fractal Audio Systems had bought Cakewalk and they did something like Pro-tools did with the Eleven rack. It caused me to wonder what percentage of Cake's customer base are guitarist...it seems it would be a very big percent and if that's true...I don't have good things to say about Cake or Gibson. But, since I don't record much I quickly got over it.

Paul did some very cool stuff on this tune. He doubled the bass part and on the original recording one can hear it pan to center when vocals are resting and pan hard left when the vocals are there. I think the double part is tracing chords but I couldn't figure out what the heck he did. I'll ask him when I see him.
Not to mention he did one of the best leads I think they ever did. JMO though.

I did (try to) pan everything as they did.
I also worked out the time/meter for every measure. If one cares to they can load their track and our track in a project - line them up and it will match beat for beat and the meter is all over the place.

I would like to say that Warren listened to a LOT of crap from me and was a perfect gentleman. He gave me a reason to record and I appreciate it and wished I would have been healthier and more focused...but that's life.

Yeah, the panning is a bit weird in 2014, but hey, it is what it is (or was).   Everything does sound fairly authentic, and I particularly liked the vocal harmonies and guitar solos.

    Thanks Jimmy.
I hope I was clear that even though it's not a work in progress that I still enjoy and appreciate
hearing what others think about all aspects. Very cool to have others ideas for consideration.

I went to the trouble of matching the meter because I felt that many projects I've done that sounded so
mechanical was due to the lack of "human". I can't say for sure that it helped but maybe once I do a project that
includes focus on volume and accent programming with humanized rhythm I'll be able to tell.
Not that I think it will ever replace the "magic" that happens when live musicians play together but may help
lesson the "mechanical" sound I hear.

So...I wonder if in the future tracks may offer the ability to be in different time signatures and meters?...seems that if musicians were doing the programming that many of the important aspects of making it would already be part of it all. Surely the push and pull...the drive the poly rhythms aren't such an unknown.

I just can't imagine playing in a band and each member having perfect timing and from start to finish of a tune.
I know if I wound up in one I'd have serious dependency issues and problem turning gig money into bail bonds.
And to have them all screw up the meter together and exactly the same.?..who programs this stuff to be so perfect and not give us a way to screw it up? If people aren't screwing something up then it just can't be real...so how can it sound real? Maybe I should just limit my concerns to tones, volumes and panning.

One of my favorite Beatles songs. I think Nowhere Man is my favorite. Paul is definitely one of my favorite Bass players along with "Geddy" Lee and Chris Squire and others.

Not to get off topic of your song but in response to your comment about timing, I still listen to my old recordings from the 70's and 80's where we didn't use computers and just played and recorded the way so many did for decades.  The feel is awesome.  I only had one MXR stereo compressor and a couple of spring reverb units I uses for stereo reverb.  When I import those mixes into a DAW, the levels are good and the EQ spectrum holds up.

I love the fact that you are going for that live feel.  It's great and an important lesson to impart to the younger ones.  They should try not to rely too heavily on loops and VST effects and really concentrate on the source first.

Ok, the Beatles are my favorite band...I was the weird kid in high school in late 80's that listened to Beatles and Metallica, pretty much every day.

You did a great effin job.  Your harmonized vocals sounded great.  Kind of lost me during the interlude, or whatever you'd call that part, something happened to the vocals there and the sharpness of the melody was obscured.

Loved how you panned the drum set to the left, true to Beatles mixing.  I thought they were mixed just a tad low, but hey, I'm splitting hairs here.

Guitar playing and sound was totally great.  Sounded like you went back in time to get the sound.  Bass sounded good too.

Nice job, sir.  I look forward to more Beatles covers from ya'.  Now I want to go back to my cover of Baba O'riley...I got the old music itch now...

Wow Warren, you and Michael knocked this one out of the park, great stuff!  I love that you did mix it like the original.  I will let a little secret out here....I've never been a big Beatles fan but I've always liked this tune.  Fact is I am starting to like them more these days.  Nice job on the vocals, you sound great!  Nice stuff guys.

    Hello Warren and Michael ,
you guys did a great job on Taxman ..
I happen to like that you guys went and accomplished the type of mix of the era ..
I'm a Beatles fan from way back when I was a kid and saw them on The Ed Sullivan Show and that's how I remember hearing them
one thing I love about when Warren posts a song here in the songs forum ,  he always brings the fun and mojo to the table
