Not that it has anything to do with OS's but in our own little microcosm we have seen how popular user hacks can be with Duckbar. I don't personal use it but it sure makes a lot of people happy.

And that's with closed code. With all the programmers and tweakers we have around here imagine all the nutty things that could happen if the Baker's actually gave us a sandbox version to play with.

I reject the entire premise of this thread. Microsoft did not follow Cakewalk with its new Win 10 scheme. Cakewalk did not give away Sonar 2015 to all that use X2 and X3. That derails the entire topic.

Back to Win10 for 7 & 8 users ... did I dream this, or is there some fine print somewhere that says the 10 box will be req'd to take auto updates?

I recall reading that somewhere too.

With Windows or OSx or even Linux distros like Ubuntu that are intended to "do it all" and mimic those other OS's it has a million and one things going on. It is always ready and waiting to handle whatever you throw at it. Which is great for multitasking.

But it also takes a lot more resources, causes a lot more potential conflicts and interruptions and is just generally unnecessary if all you want to do is ONE specific task.

So when is the iDaw coming on market?
It probably never will - we will rather see hardware assisted tasks, like UAD, SoundGrid and Avid HD stuff to target the bottlenecks - even for iPads.

From the days I was managing Novell network servers and compared to Windows servers - Windows was a joke really, so much overhead and not much power on the network cables at all. Novell was such well written optimized code for that task - Windows just a personal computer put as a common resource. Into 2000's I could run Novell server with an old 386 chipped computer before it started to be overloaded by requests. And Novell had very well integrated undelete systems that worked on all files, not this joke that recycle bin still is.

I wouldn't mind seeing such an optimized daw that just works - expandable with just network connections.
Don't know if companies specializing in building daws remove the 90% of services and crap not needed - or even they are allowed to by Microsoft/Apple. Once removed, the next update will probably put it all in action again.

Its not that anyone copied anyone else. It is a concept who's time has come and most smart companies have concluded that the days of monolithic software development are numbered and are adopting a more agile strategy.
I met with some MS folks at NAMM and they were quite interested in us switching to our membership based program and had some questions about it.
I think its a pretty positive thing for them to do and like our program it will be a win-win for them and their customers. The way I read it it seems like the Windows OS itself will be free going forward which is great for most users. My guess is what will possibly be subscription fee based is stuff like Office 365 and other enterprise based tools that will come in the future. I highly doubt that they will ever deactivate the core Windows OS.

Overall I think this is a great idea. Free Windows means more OEM's will adopt it now. It will do away with piracy of Windows and ensure that people have a stable platform since they will be releasing updates on a smaller scale and therefore potentially more frequent - just like us. Not sure how they will handle the higher end enterprise sku's and whether that will also be free.

Looks pretty good to me.

It's just this thing about Windows - Microsoft has been fined multiple times in Europe overusing their position on the market. Any other MS product maybe, but the OS - if they violate their positon again they will be taken to court, no doubt.

In principle MS could do what Avid do now, trying to use it's position to dictate any terms.
It's a bit problematic already, you buy a new computer with the same OEM Windows version for the same money MS ask just for upgrading your XP or whatever. I don't know if it changed in recent years, but that was the case I last bought a computer, 2010.

Besides, Vista and Windows 8 - nobody wanted those. If MS do tiny steps updating OS that is changing our daws, just creating issues - look at updates of Mac that need constant fixes in software it seems - I would seriously start looking for something else - else than Windows and obviously else than Sonar.

Sun Microsystems and Oracle that bought Novell if I remember correct, no tiny players those...

Some collegues I talked to were thrilled about the graphic interface of Windows servers managing it - if that is part of it. Novel were old command prompts basically.

This is pretty much the same argument that was made by many when we announced our model. That updates would be unstable. Its an incorrect one since updates in this system are typically far smaller and have much less risk of errors than you would get if you bought a new version. The same applies to MS. In fact they have been releasing smaller updates for many years - every week has windows updates after all and it doesn't break anything 99.9 percent of the time. With this model they will be far more responsive than before when you had to wait months for a service pack.

Yeah, Windows has been incremental with their constant (nagging) updates every month anyway. I kind of see that maybe it could be a problem if they did a major overhaul but since they are calling it Win 10 if they add something significant I'm assuming there will be a point added or whole new version.

IDK... I've got a good feeling about this release. You can always tell when they are just piddling around and when they are putting out something serious/long term. This feels like a long term investment.

Also from what I'VE read the new model is more gearing toward being a vehicle for them to sell add ons which is why is going to be free for up to date users.

Now if they said I have to verify every month or always be online or some other ridiculous scheme they go frack themselves but I don't think that is what is happening... yet.

The model works well if you fix regression errors quickly and kill a chunk of legacy bugs until one by one they die. Which is generally what has been happening.

If Windows 10 will be and remain free, it will probably be ad driven as there is no such thing as free.

Notation, the original DAW. Everything else is just rote. We are who we are and no more than another. Humans, you people are crazy.

1) why do I read about Linux on a board about a windows DAW, in a thread about people afraid that Microsoft would make a monthly fee for using Windows? Which is wrong!
2) Why do people hate Microsoft that easy? I hated Microsoft before, but then I bought windows and found out it wasn't that bad at all. In fact, they are a good company.

When I buy an operating system I don't expect to keep on paying. I already subscribe to Adobe and Cakewalk.

If the aim is cut-down piracy then okay that's pretty wise but what about people who can't always be online or use the OS without access to the internet?

In the climate where people are already concerned about their privacy forcing them into a corner, won't help matters and will promote OS X and Linux instead.

Huge difference.... CW lets you pay it out without credit so that you own a license at some point, not a rental like Adobe and now MS.

Today, as people retire or whatever, and can no longer work, they still have an older machine to use.
With their new model, people that move to a fixed income will be forced to do without and go back to paper and pen pretty much, or use an ancient, unstable and unsecured machine.

MS isn't moving into a charity line of business, they are moving into a new way to get more shares, and keep what they have in a new age they are helping to create for themselves only.
They are simply greasing the pocket the wallets in, not just the wallet itself now!

Notice it's not the players in heavily competitive sections of the field.... it's Adobe and MS .... those that don't really have real alternatives and competition in existence atm.
And no company or individuals needs to stockpile 80 billion dollars and still fight to pile more.
Immorally stacking mountains of greed is killing us all slowly.

Yes other photo and video fx programs are out there, but at this point none touch Adobe' suite.
Same with the OS market.... and it may breed great competition, and awesome updates, in the future, but years means so little to those with limited and fixed income now.

There's no comparison to CW's payment plan at all, who also are not here to be a charity.
They have also shifted the game with offering a third-option, while helping themselves, and accessing and expanding part of their customer base with a wider consumer footprint, not a wider corporate boot.

The only thing comparable is the "faith and hope" in the promise of "more better later"!
But Cakewalk don't stick you if you even feel they aren't holding up their end .. you can walk away and still have something in your hand to show for your long hours of picking noses for someone else.

It always takes a degree of faith in something to allow cash to be pryed out of anyone's hand, any time, for anything, but when your only option is to offer things like updates that were once free and an on-going stream of faster fixes, unseen new content and add-ons, you better bring one big bertha pry-bar. lol

I'm glad Cakewalk is innovative, and steadily carving off a chunk of their market for themselves, and using bigger and badder chainsaws doing it, but they can't compare to corporate-hog MS under Bill Gate's domination.
CW is user-driven from the start, and as a company, they seem to like it that way.
More like NASCAR than Golf ... they are part of the music-community crowd, not on the other side of ropes.
That's gold to me.

CW now introduced a new option to the subscription model, and practically relies on their own unseen content and product development for their own future and reputation.
They not only put themselves on the line, but also offers a legitimate "out" to their users ... take your ball as-is and go home if you wish, ... and if they have that much faith in their company, no matter who holds the brand, then I have faith in them as well, as people.
Maybe one day long after Gates, MS might change..... but I have no faith in them at this point not to charge "per bounce", every time we play with our balls. lol.
