Midi Guitar Moods… guitar synth work in progress ..first draft

Hello Songs Forum ,
this little clip musical clip is a collection of guitar synth ideas I have been working on recently …
this music first started out as a IK Sampletron Mellotron melody that I played on my midi guitar  ….
80 % of this song was played by me on my guitar synth ….so , be forewarned …. it's RUFF ….
FYI, ….this is just a skeleton work file that I'm gonna work up over time as new ideas come to me ….
the only parts that were not played on my guitar synth are the violin part , the drums, some regular guitar and the last musical section / closing motif ….
the music that I am trying to convey here with this clip is more or less a bunch of Mood Swings
I didn't want to break it up and make it 4 separate clips

I hope somebody enjoys it

I don't that the moods are swinging that much, well except for the section starting at 1:35, but it still works nicely IMO. Speaking of which... the section coming in at 1:35 is really cool!  Old skool prog-rock / fusion-y stuff going on.

Needs to be about 8 minutes and lots more instruments and stuff going on...lol...just kidding Kenny! Sounds good so far. I agree with Steve about the switch at 1:35, very cool. It would be cool to develop these themes further and then merge them into a final section.

For a rough draft, it's pretty cool. There are plenty of ideas there. I like this part here where it's weird with the drum bit and guitars riffs.

How is tracking with midi guitars today. The first time I ever used one was a Charvel connected to a GTM-6. Tracking wasn't good then. Almost a second later the note plays. I thought the idea was cool but didn't seem ready but that was over 20 years ago. I've heard mixed reactions not to long ago but still it was probably a few years.

Nice work!

Fun stuff. Plenty of themes to expand on. I totally dig that bit at 1:35. Frank would approve.
I got a November chill at 2:10. Gloriously cold and dark.
It will be interesting to see where you go with this. Yeah, I can see 8 minutes easy.

Hello Dan ,
8 minutes   … I would be happy just to get  4 or 5  really good minutes where it all made sense….
this is kinda the reason why I posted this clip as a skeleton, i did that to get some possible feedback on what folks might dig or not dig..
I'm happy that the switch at 1:35 seems to be going over well …those are the type of ideas I have been practicing on my guitar for my own head ….
I'm glad I happened to record it , and I'm happy people seem to like it

thanks for your feedback …it means a lot

Hello Robert ,
Yes this is only a rough draft , I didn't want to start piling things up and getting too dense right out of the gate ..
I'm not sure where I want to go with this yet and it certainly needs a lot more Love than what is here .
the section with the guitar , bass and drums turns out to be the easiest thing I did on this clip ...
I was just fooling around one day practicing a long to the drum beat ( at a slower tempo ) and I decided to hit record …..
for all my midi parts , I used a plug called Midi Guitar as opposed to my hardware midi guitar set up ...
the latency seems better ..it is a little more snappier and responsive IMHO...
thank you for giving this a listen

Hello Robert,
thanks man  oh yeah , I like Frank …I guess what I'm trying to is come up with my own thing ..like what he did.
I keep going for it …and going for it …and going for it . I sure got a long way to go before I get even close .

I feel good that I posted this…….what happened at 1:35 was something that was done just for myself .
I honestly didn't think anybody would dig it ….it never dawned on me to post it …..i guess I'm ahead of the game …
the section after that is so much wetter than I'm used to doing….yeah , I got to get with the program ….

hhhmm , eight minutes …thats the second time that came up .It just might be a very good idea for me to plan for eight minutes .

OK that's gonna be the new bullseye ….

thank you Robert for the listen and your kind words of encouragement

Hello Voda La Void ,

the tempo this music is posted at is the actual tempo I recorded all my midi guitar parts at . ( pre 1:35 )
after reading your post / feedback I put my tune in an audio editor and sped up the section before 1 :35 …to see how it would sound
you know something you are right …it did sound a lot better a little faster …thank you for the sugestion
1:35 fit nicer at it's original tempo when it came in on the faster file  …

Yes folks , once again it's the Cakewalk Songs Forum to the rescue ..

thanks Voda La Void for the listen and the kind words you said on my writing

This is very cool stuff Kenny..first section had a lovely Oldfield vibe, then Gentle Giant burst through the door at 1:35! Love the orchestral section too, reminded me of one of the first tunes I listened to here, your track 'A Tear for You..' that needs to be expanded.

Interesting and pleasant mixture of modern and historic music..  medieval chamber music moods, the electronic music ambiance and jazz rock band vibes. Beautiful melody lines and arrangement.  Sounds nice.

Well done Kenny. I have a midi guitar - play it through a Roland GR-30 - think that's what it is - it's packed away right now. I can't get that kind of sound out of it - you set up sounds really nice.

Love it.

Hey Kenny
normally I don't like commenting on "draft" and "in progress" work, but I always love your work, so I had to listen anyway and I'm not disappointed!  love the different sounds and textures throughout.

1:35 is a pretty abrupt change, not sure I like the change there, I'd make that transition a little different.  same for 2:07.  love that last segment, tho, love the choir sounds .  piano's a little "verby" IMO.

nice work Ken!  can't wait to hear a more mature version!

Hello James ,
Yes, the first section needs to be built up some more ..ideas are starting to come to me ...
I saw Gentle Giant  some time back in the 70's in a small theater …I loved what I heard …it must of stuck w me
the orchestral section on this is just a hint at this point ..I left it bare bones to see if I want to develop it more ..
my feeling is yes ,  I would like to incorporate a few acoustic instruments playing along w the orchestra .
i wish i knew how to tap on the guitar ..i keep getting a vibe that some tapping over that would be nice
yeah , my old tune " A Tear for You "…It may be a good idea for me to go and redo that one at some point

thanks for the listen

I'm a midi guitar junkie. I really enjoyed it. Did you program any of those sounds our mostly work from presets?

StudioCat > I use Windows 10 and Sonar Platinum. I have a touch screen.
I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

Hello Ben ,

A big part of my experimenting involves seeking a balance between the melody , harmony , arrangement , correct instrumentation, all with the intended goal of accomplishing a highly individualized expression of my music ...
While doing this sort of thing , I spend a lot of my time listening and imagining what I would like to hear …
…then I just let the chips fall where they may fall

I'm happy you liked this music clip the way I posted it so far

Well done Kenny. I have a midi guitar - play it through a Roland GR-30 - think that's what it is - it's packed away right now. I can't get that kind of sound out of it - you set up sounds really nice.

Love it.

Hello Mark,
I'm using my guitar as a midi controller only to input midi data for the VST synths I used on this tune .
I think the VST synths  sound better than the few holdover hardware synths I still have collecting dust ....

I'm happy you liked my playing

Hey Kenny
normally I don't like commenting on "draft" and "in progress" work, but I always love your work, so I had to listen anyway and I'm not disappointed!  love the different sounds and textures throughout.

1:35 is a pretty abrupt change, not sure I like the change there, I'd make that transition a little different.  same for 2:07.  love that last segment, tho, love the choir sounds .  piano's a little "verby" IMO.

nice work Ken!  can't wait to hear a more mature version!

Hello Reese ,
I got a few things interfering w my music right now so it may be a little while before I can whip this one into shape …at least I'm getting to play a lot of acoustic guitar ….
yes , I do enjoy coming up with unconventional musical phrases and instrumentation , ..
in the meantime I'm glad you enjoyed most of this clip  …

gswitz
I'm a midi guitar junkie. I really enjoyed it. Did you program any of those sounds our mostly work from presets?

Hi gswitz , yes , midi guitar can be very addictive ….it is so much different than playing keys ...
I might start with a preset/ patch , but I won't stay w a preset …
I hit everything pretty hard all across the board in all areas…starting w the synth patch itself, track EQ and efx….the master buss ,
this song has already been through a number of different  DAWs to get to where it is now and that's what works for me
I'm happy you enjoyed this midi guitar outing of mine

Kenny, I really like the progression in this and all of the changes throughout.  You've made good choices with the samples, especially that mellotron/flute sound.  The change at 1:35 reminded me of Zappa for some reason.  You've piqued my interest in MIDI guitars, as I'm looking for a new guitar.  I eagerly await your next composition.

All the best,
Lynn

FABULOUS - I liked the flute sound in the beginning - and LOVED the prog section from 1:35 (like the others above).

Please PM me if you ever need any prog keyboard tracks to go with anything you are writing - I would be happy to try to help you.  :)

Hello Lynn,
I like the sound of the IK Sampletron a lot , thats where I got the patch you enjoyed .
Sure Frank Zappa is an influence of mine , he blew me away back in the day ….
Midi guitar is certainly a tough nut to crack …I wish you the best of luck if you decide to go there ...

I'm very pleased you enjoyed the progression on this clip
I'm in the process of working up some acoustic guitar parts that hopefully I may be able to add to this song at some point …
they sound pretty good so far …it is a slow process over here on my end , i might end up just doing something with them on their own .
thank you once again Lynn, for song listen and kind words

One of the best "ruff" drafts that I have heard.  I too liked that change at ~1:35.  I am not familiar with MIDI guitars (I have enough trouble with the 6 string electrics), but you certainly have opened my eyes to the possibilities.
Very nice work!

Hi Kenny,

I love it when you get outside your usual bag.  Given your level of harmonic development as a jazz player I think that you could apply some of that knowledge by being more daring with the root motions (staying away from the diatonic key-center cliches) and maybe using some of the more exotic modes in places (dorian #4,major b6, a weird altered pentatonic scale perhaps?).

Not to belabor the point too much, but here's a little "transformation" of your IV-V-vi progression (F-G-Ami): http://www.audiorecordingandservices.com/Kenny456.mp3  to give you an idea of how to render your piece unrecognizable ;-D

It's really a huge personal challenge to integrate your skill set in an unfamiliar context and I'm excited to catch a glimpse of where you're ultimately heading with this.

Love it Kenny. Especially where it transitions from the Renaissance Fair to Zappa.
