Nice catchy number.  I don't dance 'cause I can't dance worth a diddley but this made me want to get up and dance.
Very nice production indeed -- you had a good mix of sounds to keep one's attention focused on the song.
Good one!!

Thanks Freddy.  I can't/don't dance either!  As far as the song goes, I just tried to keep it moving along without too many repetitive parts as many other dance songs tend to have.

Dance tracks are not generally my thing but this has a decent 80s vibe to it. Production is top notch.

I concur with bapu.  Not usually my style but it comes off well.  The funny thing is, even though there are certain styles I might not listen to, I do find it interesting to dabble in *any* style.  It's like a city bloke riding a horse; not comfortable or familiar, but fun to try out all the same.  Maybe I should give this style a whirl for the fun of it (though I may alienate my fan-base; both of them).

I for one, DO like dance music (actually, I like anything that's musically melodic), and you've done a very good job here. I also like mixing genre's of rock, dance, and classical etc...so, listening to Mind gap was right down my alley. Well done on the top notch mix!!! I lestened through headphones and it was a treat. Keep up the good work and would love to hear more.

Thanks for giving it a listen Peter.  I think it's good to step outside our usual style sometimes.  In this case, I think I kept it simple enough to be able to pull it off.  In the larger view, I'm still trying to develop my style for electronic music, having come from a long rock/pop background.

Thanks so much Mesh, I'm glad you liked it!  To be honest I'm not sure how many more dance tunes I'll do in the future.  Maybe none more.  Or maybe a bunch.  But I probably won't do another one for a while.  I'm trying to focus on more downtempo/groove/ambient type stuff.

Hey thanks for taking the time to listen Gary!  I looked up your reference to "19" and found this on YouTube.  I can see there are some similarities there!  Although 19 is quite a bit more political, while Mind the Gap is... well... meaningless? :)  In any case, thanks for the complimentary comparison!

Thanks Clint!  No audio loops were used in this song.  It was mostly synths, although I do admit there were one or two arpeggiations and some MIDI loops for the drums that I used.  Here is my track list:
  1. z3Ta+2 "Club Organ DSF" (arpeggiator)
  2. Battery "Nein Oh Nein Kit" (I think there were 9 different MIDI loops that I edited together)
  3. Massive "Swagga" (performed)
  4. Reaktor - GoBox - "Hold the Line" (beatbox, edited)
  5. Massive "Acid Raw" (performed)
  6. Rapture "Acid Guitar Solo" (arpeggiator)
  7. Kontakt "Street Knowledge Kit" (MIDI loops to add a little more rhythm underneath)
  8. Battery "Nein Oh Nein Kit" (performed, just to add some extra hi-hat)
  9. AAS Player "Far East Radio" (performed)
  10. licensed audio sound clip "Mind the gap"
  11. Stratocaster guitar (performed, using Guitar Rig "Country Twang Driven")
  12. Ibanez humbucker guitar (performed, using Guitar Rig "Stoned Rhythm")
  13. another electric guitar track that I decided to leave out
  14. Massive (created my own patch for this "bass stutter" sound, and performed)
As you can see, I've been favoring Native Instruments Komplete recently. ;)

There's something nice and homely about the very British sounding "Mind the Gap" announcement, which is pretty cool for someone coming from PA...

It has a great 90's vibe, it works very well as a composition and is produced immaculately.

Who cares what genre it is, this is good music. Period.

As for the title (and announcement), I was previewing clips from my immense licensed audio archives (The General) and was looking for something "train" sounding.  When I heard the PA announcer with his "mind the gap" warning I was immediately hooked and had to place it into the song. :)  I figured it would resonate with Brits (and others) and maybe make the song a little more memorable, i.e. whenever they actually heard a similar announcement in a train station.

Cool track! Everything fits really well and the sound is spot on. Lead synth has a nice "round" tone that's edgy enough but not too much, if you know what I mean. I really liked the guitar break, the sound was a lot different from the rest of the track but fit right in.
Great job!

Thanks rscain!  Yeah, I've found a few really nice synth sounds, although I can only take so much credit for that.  There are so many good patches out there that often the hardest part is summoning the patience to find one that's good.  Thanks too for your comment about the guitars.  At first that bit was just a drum solo, but I thought it needed something more.  After I added the guitars I wasn't quite sure if they fit with the rest of the song, but lately I think I agree with you - I like the contrast they add.

Yeah, I guess it does make a difference sometimes, but I have to admit that tools like arpeggiators, EZ Keys, Melodyne / Autotune / V-vocal, and not to mention huge loop libraries (both audio and MIDI) have become so good lately that it's hard to produce anything without them.  Of course it's easy to OVERuse those tools sometimes, so we must be vigilant about that. ;)

Good stuff Walt
Love the section where the guitar sound comes in - the track takes on a different feeling at that point but I miss it when it's gone

Thanks Daryl!  Yeah, I struggled with that middle bit for a while.  It was initially a drum solo, then I added some synthy bass stuff underneath (which found its way into most of the rest of the song).  But it was still needing something, so I went back to what I know... my trusty stratocaster. :)  I guess I could have done something more like a distorted lead, but I kinda liked the spacy verb/delay thing as I was flipping through settings on Guitar Rig, so then I wound up keeping it.

WOW!  Now that is a great first attempt.  Love the opening riff with the percussion claps. I'm really liking the guitar parts you added during the break.  The mix is sounding good on my end nice separation of the highs and lows.  If I had to nit-pick this piece and this is really picking it, I would add more effects to give this piece some depth. I hear the effects you have added but it sounds a bit dry on the synth riffs during the breaks.  I would leave the effects alone on the percussion claps but add some to that synth during the breaks of 1:11-1:18 and again at 1:55-2:11. This is not my norm of a listen so I really shouldn't be giving any suggestion on dance tracks.   I'm really glad I gave this piece a chance.  KUDOS!

Thanks so much Kev for listening and commenting.  I'm no expert on dance music either, to be honest.  I'll give your suggestions a look next time I jump back into that project.  Thanks!
