Mixing headphones
What headphones do you guys use to check your mixes with? I know that this has been asked many times before, and I know that we shouldn't mix on headphones alone, but there may be some new models out that you guys just love. Thanks.

Headphones? None. Ever. A mix done on headphones will only ever translate to THOSE HEADPHONES. Please don't put yourself through the abuse. Mix on 2 (or more) different pairs of decent speakers and enjoy life.

Here's a link http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/K240mk2/ I use AKG K240's to check my mixes. If they weren't given to me as a gift, i would have never bought them. I cant see spending that much on cans. I was using a cheap sampson set. UP Im glad i have the AKG's though. what a difference it makes and my mixes are progressing better since i got those Cj

What headphones do you guys use to check your mixes with? Sennheiser HD280Pro, which do double-duty as tracking cans. A bargain at a hundred bucks, no other headphones offer better isolation. But they are not high-fidelity. You cannot make EQ decisions with them. Almost everyone will warn against mixing on headphones and cite the perils of doing so. But sometimes you have no choice: you have an awful room, you have roommates (awful or otherwise), you have noisy/sleeping neighbors, you live under the flightpath of an airport. Sometimes you just need the clarity of headphones for diagnostic purposes. I think it's completely reasonable to use headphones as an alternate reference. Along with the recroom hi-fi, a portable stereo, multiple car stereos and some cheap plastic computer speakers I also compare mixes on the Sennheisers, stock iPod earbuds, Shure in-ear monitors (I like those the best!), 2 models of Sony headphones, as well as Audio-Technica hi-fi headphones. The Audio-Technica ATHM-50 offers a nice balance of comfort, accuracy and reasonable price.

Sennheiser HD25's - a fair bit of bass extension but a bit toppy - wouldn't ever mix on them, but great for checking fades, pops/crackles, breath noises, panning, guitar clunks etc.

If you want to check your mix use open headphones. I use AKG K701 (K702 is out with detachable cord). Had to play them in for 300 hours (put them on and left for work :-), that made a huge difference in "warmth". But they are expensive. I'm looking for some new closed headphones for tracking. Anyone reccomend Sennheiser HD 380 Pro, AKG K271 MK II, BeyerDynamic DT 770 Pro or something else? And I need a new headphone amp. What about Samson S-Phone?

I use an ATH M40. It is nice for sub $100. Over is the M50 - better. For tracking and checking mixes. For a headphone amp - if you are looking for a multi-out the Presonus is good for about $100. Line in, line out, 4 headphones out with vol control and a mono button. Plenty of juice to hear over those pesky drummers for a C-note. @

And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

I track in AKG K240 DH and the mix is so close to my mackie hr-824s that it's a breeze to finish it up when I switch to speakers. I like these phones so much that I bought a spare set for safe keeping.

You cannot make EQ decisions with them. I use these at work. They are good for tracking as you say, but they have a massive high end boost that makes them unusable for checking a mix. AKG240's are a reliable industry standard and I have used a pair happily for many years, but my favorites now are the Yamaha RH10MS. The isolation is just as good as the Sennheiser and the audio is very smooth and trustworthy. It even has the S-Logic technology which causes the audio to be projected on the ears at an angle, mimicing the position of speakers (for the most part). Best part, you can find them at fullcompass for around $100. Great deal. Edit: the description on these say "surround headphones", but that is a little white lie for marketing's sake, these are stereo with a sense of forward direction.

Lots of AKG fans here, I see. I used to count myself among them, but that was for pleasure listening, not recording. I find them uncomfortable after a couple hours. The Sennheisers can be worn for a long time before they start to annoy, and the ATH-50's are so comfortable I could probably wear them all day long. I'm still an AKG fan sonically, but the older I get the more I value comfort in all things. Sedans with heated leather seats now trump sports cars and pickup trucks.

Hands down the best pair of headphones I've ever used for checking mixes would be Sennheiser's HD600. I personally own a pair, and can without a doubt say they by far beat most of the competition out there as far as monitoring headphones go. They are an open back design, which lends a far more natural and accurate sound. In fact, when fellow studio heads come over and use them, they tell me the headphones sound just like the monitors, except right over their ears! Be sure to only use them as another reference source, and you'll realize how much tighter/stronger your mixes are!!

But I guess everyone had a different head Hands down the best pair of headphones I've ever used for checking mixes would be Sennheiser's HD600. I don't doubt that, Sennheiser makes awesome products when they try. (MKH800) The Beyerdynamic headphones are supposed to be very good also, and they look like the would sit on your head like a cloud.
