updated mix 10-3 http://soundcloud.com/bats-brew/moonshine-ver3-1 i think this one is a better version, with edited solo guitar tracks, new panning scheme, a lot of small tweaks that add up to dial it in more. but i might have reduced the bass guitar a bit in the mastering, still not sure about the low end translation now. of course, it never ends. LOL that would be an easy fix, i think it's ok in the mix, but i used Multiband comp on the mastering of this one, and did not on the first one. even tho i set it for a long attack, and not much compression, it might have smoothed it off a bit too much. still on the fence with that one.

Just listened on low-end PC speakers and sounds fine, mixwise. The songwriting is nice, vocals great, guitar playing great. Caused me to go listen to some of your other stuff -- listening to Pali Face right now...that is some serious fretwork! I like the tone & effects on the guitar -- Channeling David Gilmour.

Dude! If moonshine will make me sound this good, I'll take TWO gallons! This is "guitars done right". Might like to hear your voice a scoche louder...don't hide it. Awesome.

I forgot to mention that your song loosely reminds me of some Poco I used to listen to back in the 70's...and they sounded great.

cwestmont nice man, thanks low end pc speakers, yep, that's a set i don't really have to check against, so it's good to know there is some decent translation there... i have a set of speakers from my old jam box, some panasonic boom box speakers: i've been thinking of throwing these on top of my monitors, and switching them over to the headphone amp i'm using (a yamaha natural sound reciever)..... now, that pali face thing, i wrote and recorded back in 1999, that was done standing very close to an extremely loud and wide open 60 watt mesa boogie head and cab, i use that song as my demonstration for working with controlled feedback from proximity effect and yea, gilmour would be a touchstone there thanks for listening!

hey guys/gals, thanks for continuing to check this one out, i thought it had faded away, and missed these recent comments night fox thank you for listening... the guitars were making me 2nd guess.... because, it's a single guitar part, but it's played 4 different times, on two different guitars i liked the phasing of all the strings together, with the different timbres, made it sound almost like a 12-string, even tho it's a standard 6 and i thought it may be overkill, when really one guitar tells the story... but, the way it's panned, and played slightly different from each part, i thought it would fill out nicely. so, i'm glad it's working out Janet thanks, i appreciate that! marcus glad you like this mix... i used a Taylor 414 full sized auditorium for the parts panned hard left and right, and i used a Seagull Mosiac Artist for the 2ndary rhythm parts that come and go and fill out the midrange, and they are panned more like 50% left and right. a single mic on them, i just position myself til i hear it good in the monitors/cans i know where the sweet spot is on the taylor, the seagull was a bit trickier.

Heya Bat, great tune, sounds excellent on my HR824s. I get the feeling I still mix too quiet on my final mixes. Cheers, Tony

tony thanks for listening.... glad you cranked it on 8's, i assume if i had low end issues, they'd show up quicker on an 8" woofer. i mix loud and quiet... to determine how things sit. and i check mix with headphones (akg K240 II) and earbuds (sony MDR-EX71SL) which go down to 6 hz. and so if you want to have "LOUDER" mixes, which i assume you mean 'more upfront' and not necessarily louder 'energy wise', you might want to experiment more with compression and limiting. you can do some pretty great limiting across acoustic guitar sub buses, for example, with the right settings, keep them very transparent.... but get the overall 'up frontedness' happening, which might help out the feeling of having mixes 'too soft' or 'quiet. thanks again!

Awright... this mix sounds smoother and more refined... Vocals and guitars seem a little tighter... and a different effect on the lead guitar... yeah, this is happenin'...

thanks nat!! i thought this one had faded away....... i walked away from this mix several times, to come back to it with a fresh perspective. i stripped out quite a bit, which made it easier for a listener to get into. i hear all this cool stuff, 'possibilities' if you will, while tracking... and i go with them, knowing that i'll edit it out later. then, i end up liking all of it, not wanting to edit it out. LOL thanks for commenting
