MoonShine --- with updated mix 10-3
updated mix 10-3 http://soundcloud.com/bats-brew/moonshine-ver3-1 original mix: http://soundcloud.com/bats-brew/moonshine-9-17 a Spacey acoustic/electric ode to moonshine, and it's after effects. :) i just finished putting my studio room together in the new old house i just moved into.... and this is my first project in there, with new monitor setup and all, i've got a completely new acoustic environment i'm going to have to learn to mix in. this is a new version of this song, with added bass track and new mix from scratch. this is the 1st song i used my new KSM44 to track with. this features a Taylor 414 full sized grand auditorium, and a Seagull Artist Mosiac, mixed together, along with a custom build USACG stratocaster doing the electric work thru an old mesa boogie head. Bass is a Carvin LB70, thru a sansamp bass di, mic pre and compressor. it is mixed for a softer sound, and is not mastered hot, so CRANK it up. it wants to be loud, it really does. how does the low end translate on your system? this is what i'm working on with this one. i want the low end to be full, but not boomy.

This sounds awesome, as do most all of your productions... maybe too awesome... to me, the subject matter calls for an bluesier, earthy, organic vibe... The bass sounds very good in my studio and in the house... The vocals, have your unique, trademark sound, but seem to me, maybe a little overproduced for the song... electric guitars may also be a little busy here & there... acoustic guitars are great... as always, steller performances... I'll check back later... great work...

The mix sounds excellent to my ears, I'm listening on my k240's which I trust. The bass sounds great. I've got the KSM27 - love the KSM series mics. The acoustic guitars are recorded beautifully - as is everything else.

DIGI Thanks for listening, yeah, ole popcorn sutton, was definitely an influence for this song. let me know how it sounds on your big system as soon as you can listen there...... wookie appreciate the review. soft attack on bass...... i did play this with my fingers, and there are sections where i'm very mellow with the attack... there is limiting and compression on the bass (i always track bass thru a dbx compressor, then i add limiting at the bass bus level, but the attack is usually backed off, with only about a 5 ms release..) i want the bass to fill out the bottom of the acoustics, and not necessarily add percussion.

guitarhacker... thank you for chiming in on this.... i'm not too concerned with playback issues on computer speakers.... i'm really gearing my mixes for full playback systems, and decent ear buds. the PC speakers almost never sound very good. surely not good enough to tell how something is translating, i listen to pro stuff on my little computer speakers at work sometimes, and it's all over the map with translation. but it's good to know i'm in the ballpark there. honestly, i don't want folks to listen to my stuff on a little desktop speaker... i want them to take it home and CRANK IT THE PHUCK UP!!! LOL thanks again.....

notnat thanks for listening and critiqueing.... bluesier, this IS my bluesier! LOL but the comment about the vocals being overproduced a bit.. that kinda stumped me, because they are just basically raw captures, with a minimum of eq, close to dry, and simply mixed and panned. one solo voice, one 2nd solo voice mixed in and out, and 3 part harmony. that's just me singing and trying to blend my voices together, no real tricks or production other than faders up. the elec guitar, busy, yeah, i'll buy that! heheh again, that's just the way i hear it, i don't want it real clean, i want it all kind of sloppy, like a moonshine hangover. kinda the way i feel right now.......

Cool. I love the arrangement. I liked the tune. The acoustic sounds a little too muddy for my ear, but still very nice. Daryl

eric paul thanks for listening..... yea, it's pretty moving, chord wise, yet laid back in the delivery. that's kinda what i was going for with this 'moonshine' motif glad you dig it guitartrek thanks man, i have the k240's as well. i spot check mixes with them, and use them during tracking. i used the omni setting on the ksm44 for the guitars, not sure that's what i like, i'm still experimenting with that. it'll be quite a few sessions with it, before i have it all figured out.

daryl appreciate the listen.... hm, acoustics muddy, you are the first to mention that..... what kind of system are you listening to for playback? i'll have to mess around with some alternate mixes this weekend, to see what might be making the guitars 'muddy', but on my playback system right now, they're crystal clear.. in fact, i did some roll offs centered around 5khz because i thought they sounded to plasticy and harsh... and on mastering, i roll off the whole thing around 17k, which is higher than most people hear anyway... and of course, i always do aggressive high pass on the guitar tracks, anywhere from 100hz all the way up to 190hz....

I'm glad I wasn't near an open flame when I listened to this volatile song. It's amazing how different people hear things so differently, but I think this mix shines. I like the balance from top to bottom, and I especially like your vocals. Those Shure mics really do an outstanding job. Congratulations for successfully transferring your production skills from one studio to another.

Well, I'm using M-Audio BX8a monitors. They are pretty true and this is beautiful . All of it. Maybe a tad of bass rumble at times but you know it could be just a bass track alone and I'd love that! LOL Through the Sennheiser phones the bass sounds very punchy. We're doing a new song and it has a similar sound through each one. That makes me think it might be pretty good. Good enough for Mr. Brew, good enough for Pug! This stuff's pretty strong!

I absolutely love the acoustic guitar sound in this. Now I know what I need to record my Martin...$999! That mic sure captures the guitar really well. Great tune! Bass sounds great in the mix as well. I was slightly distracted by the movement of the strat as it seemed abrupt in a few spots, but that's probably just me Regards, Dan

warren- thanks for the tech info..... i DID mix the bass as deep as i thought i could get away with.. that magic 'rumble' frequency, well, i've just got to find it, and nuke it!! LOL i mean nuke it... i've got several key low end freq's i Nuke now...... and i'm quite convinced i'm right.. but it still needs more dialing in. i'll check out your new tune, is it up now? the 'life is good' tune? or is this one you're still working on? either way, thanks for listening and commenting]

dcumpian hey, i apprecate the comments! and yeah, there are plenty of good mics out there, especially for a grand, but i like the ksm44. it works for me. movement of the strat, yes, that'd be a 'production decision'. LOL and possibly a wrong one..... i'm still debating certain mix elements, a couple of places i really WANTED it to stick out, but in others, i'd like it to work with the arrangement... i like the occasional aural shock treatment, keeps the listener from getting too lazy. heheh

P.S you asked about the low end. The balance is fine on my set up (Rokit 5s or DT990 phones). I think how the low end weight gives a great foundation to the guitars and allow you to enjoy the guitars to the full without distracting. But when you listen for the bass guitar its self you can pick it out easily and enjoy its growly tone. So just right IMO

STUART thanks for listening, glad you liked it i think the idea of filling out the low end, without swamping the guitars, is what i was after... kinda what you are describing what you are hearing. i did a new mix of this during the weekend work break, and i think i've been able to bring the guitars up without changing the bass dynamics.... i'll post the new one this evening makke glad you like this one.. thanks for commenting!
