Moving Clips w/ Layers

Hey all,
Quick question here..

Is there a way to move layered clips around without it cutting off the clip its layering over? Everytime I move a layered clip, it seems to cut off the clip its overlaping, and I have to go and manually extend the clip thats been cut off.  This is quite annoying..

Is there an option somewhere that I can turn this feature off?  It's a pain to have to keep going back and manually extending the clips that I am trying to overlap.

Hopefully I am explaining myself correctly.

Thanks!

Yep.  Turn off automatic crossfading and you should be good.  The icon looks like a box with an X in it.

No, I don't think it's crossfades in this instance... I'm not at my DAW now but I vaguely remember a cursor tool setting you could use in layers that would give that effect. Check out 'comping in sonar' in the Sonar Help file.

Ah yes, I see what you mean.  I'm away from my DAW right now, but I think that is in the Options->Global->Editing pane.

If I understand your question correctly, I think all you have to do is right-click in the Clips pane, hover your mouse cursor over the ">>>" menu item at the bottom of the popup menu, choose "Drag and Drop Options..." and select "Blend Old and New" instead of "Replace Old with New". Works for me anyway. I can move a layered clip and it doesn't cut off anything from other layers.

Dwcaldwell, I am not copying clips, I am trying to nudge them while in layered form without it cutting away the area thats being overlapped.  After it cuts away, then I have to go and manually pull the clip back to its original size.

not sure i fully understand whats going on, but do you have 'track layers' turned on (icon with 3 vertical lines on each track. 3 horizontal if activated)?

Sorry if I am misunderstanding, but with the D&D option set to blend, I can nudge a layered clip as well as drag it without affecting any of the other overlapping layered clips. If the option is set to replace old with new, then I get the behavior you describe. This works for me whether or not the Track Layers button is enabled or disabled. Anyway, I hope you get it figured out.

Definitely a "Blend Old and New" instead of "Replace Old with New" issue, as dwcaldwell is telling you.  Options>Global>Editing - choose "Blend Old and New."  You're describing what happens when you have "Replace Old With new"--exactly as Don said.
