Would it not be safe to say that basically all country and western, blues, rock & roll (traditional), jazz, hip hop, r&b, funk, soul and so on are "American"? Would not anything else be "influence".... IE British Influence, or European Influence (continental), Asian Influence...
To me, virtually everything in those genres is 'foundationally' American. The baseline if you will.
Pop and other genres are of course a tad more "international", but when I think about the genres above, it is "American music". Some artists like Springsteen might be a bit more flag waving or sing about Americana (IE nationalistic) but overall... it all is.
That being said, there are bands that make me think of the UK (Like Tull) because they have a more traditional influence to their music than American, and others that do not (like Yes) which are neutral (IE I could not guess where they were from).
I guess what I am saying is, for me "Amercian" is the automatic attribution for most of the genres of modern music I listen to, unless there is something distinctly non-American about it.
