Music, artists or songs which encapsulate America?

I was talking with a friend about musicians or artists who describe or give a sense in their songs of what it is to be English - outside of the English Folk genre, there aren't that many that come to mind..Ray Davies (The Kinks), XTC, Pulp, Ian Dury, Jethro Tull are a few.

So...do any artists describe your life in America, make you think 'yeah, that song's about me', or is America too vast and diverse to be nailed down in song?

    John Mellencamp
    Bruce Springsteen
    Tom Petty
    Janis Joplin

Those are the folks who make me think of life in America. None of them make me think "that song is about me", but somehow they capture the spirit.

The rest I can't recall...probably because of the first two. Oh the "Fish cheer" seems to pop-up often. Is that a song? Prolly no.

To the 'English' list I'd add:

The Beatles (particularly in the films)
    The Jam, of course
    The Worzels.
    Chas 'n' Dave
    Billy Bragg
and probably Pink Floyd because Gilmour sounds terribly posh when he talks.

Yeah, I gotta go Dylan and Tom Petty on this one.  Springsteen speaks for the masses, and even if I'm not a major fan of his music, I think it exemplifies for a LOT of people what it means to be an American.

How about Little Feat?  EmmyLou Harris, Lucinda Williams... I could go on.

    OK, yep, I thought Springsteen, Petty, Mellencamp, Dylan and the Beach Boys might get a mention. I wonder if this might fit;

In The Neighborhood - Tom Waits

It even features CJ at 0:54

Not sure this can be easily done ... America is at least 2 countries and the tastes in NY stink in SF and vice versa ... and of course .... even worse ... the rest of America has never heard those bands, but they sure know Garth Brooks and Dollie Parton!

I really think that bands that more personify the variety of tastes and work ... I would think ... are:

    Chicago
    Grateful Dead
    Bruce Springsteen
    Michael Jackson
    Bob Dylan
    Miles Davis
    Frank Zappa
Beach Boys (definitely! -- added later)

I think that as we hit the 90's and the Internet begins to filter in and kill off the music corporation controls, which England still favors with the BBC still ... not as open as they could be ... albeit they are not afraid to play an artsy band ... something that does not happen in America where the radio/industry controls make it very difficult for anyone to do something different.

But the Internet pretty much made the hard rock that became "metal" ... and I would say that bands like Dream Theater is quite American ... albeit trying hard to expand into more music than Americana -- something that "fans" that have little music knowledge are often not willing to readily accept and inderstand.

This is less of a problem in Europe where arts have a massive history and even rock musicians are given the benefit of the doubt as artists ... in America they are just more punks, or people that are trying to go against the thread of the mainstream ... and artists are not accepted ... here it's money and art be damned ... at least over there they say "art for art's sakes" (with a tickle to 10CC) .... but here they say ... you stink! ... but they will buy a Mapplethorpe for millions! --- and that's a big issue ... if something sells 200k copies in the New York area ... it becomes a "star" or a "hit" ... and the rest of the country couldn't careless!

America ... sometimes ... has no culture ... if it did, the government would take care to ensure that some semblance of culture is maintained and continued ... instead, they let the arts die! ... ohhh .. except some oldie out there for the Kennedy Center ... so the richies have an excuse to have another cocktail paid for the government! -- that's art for you!

But the sad thing is that the likes of Miles Davis, Frank Zappa and others, deserve some credit -- but they will never get it ... because The Boston Pops doesn't play them! And the Kennedy Center will never get to hear them either!

Well that's all very interesting Moshkaie...but I was actually asking what music resonates with Americans to the extent that it describes their life.

I do wish you'd stop trying to shoehorn your views on what constitutes 'proper music' into every thread.

I would also add the the above lists:

    CCR and Grand Funk

If you are going to include American / Canadian bands like Steppenwolf I would have to say Mountain

If you want to step out of the rock genre and include jazz cats like Miles Davis … jazz is an American art form

pretty much any American blues musician

    The Carter Family

    Dave

8.5 PE 64, i7 Studio Cat, Delta 1010, GMS and Ludwig Drums, Paiste Cymbals

Not in the slightest. I was talking to you, not 'everyone else'.

How can the answer be 'none? Are you saying that there is no music that speaks to an American of his life, that makes him conscious of where he came from, his lineage and his history?

Just to clear, the question wasn't -  'what is American music'? or 'what music is valid?'

I'll try and explain a little more - when I listen to a song called 'The Fall of Trees'  for example, the hairs on my arms stand up, because it resonates deeply with me..I get a sense of being 'English'

    You'll find it here;

    http://www.myspace.com/timothywilkinson

I'm asking if there are songs that give similar feelings to my American friends...could be Aaron Copeland, could be Miley Cyrus, I'm just interested.

My apologies for mis-understanding the question ...

You might want to listen to Chicago 1 and Chicago 2 ... I always thought that in Chicago 1 they were almost saying ... we're Americans and this is our country too, which was a very big theme at the time in 1968 (I lived 3 hours north in Madison, Wisconsin then) ...

I liked a couple of Credence Clearwater Revival's songs ... what's that song called ... Forgotten Son ... it's a bit on the harsh and vicious side ... but it brings the point home strongly. And I can relate to it ... at the time ... they had the first draft lottery, and my birthday came up ... #9 ... so that song stood out for me, even though I am not an American but I have a Green Card ... which means I am an American .,.. only not on that Green Card.

The whole Woodstock thing is very American for me ... I never felt that kind of electricity in any concert or music that I have seen in Europe, or Brazil ... the sad part for me being that too much of that music was taken from granted and did not mean much ... except a big trip ... and I always thought ... this is the saddest thing of all ... most of these people couldn't careless what the music is about ... they just wanted to get stoned and trip man ... and I have a problem with that ... I was never a druggy (way too psychic for it), and already an artist and writer ... which means music and the arts MEAN something to me ... where in America ... it doesn't! ... and this was an issue in High School ...

I remember we took a trip to Chicago on my Sr. year ... and on the same day we went to the Chicago Art Institute and it has this massive Goya in the front and other stuff ... which I loved of course ... and then we went to see Man of La Mancha with Richard Kiley ... which everyone loved but I didn't care for it -- Americans love the pastiche musicals because they are not real! -- hehe ... and right after we went across the street to see Yehudi Menuhin and Ravi Shankar in their East meets West tour ... which of course was the highlight for me ... and a total far out experience ... but everyone in the bus thought it was stupid ... which kinda tells you that sometimes Americans are so washed out by TV ... that "art" means nothing to them ...

I sometimes say ... too much of the "American" stuff is superficial ... and not as good as it could be ... and I tend to agree with the literary and artistic definitions ... Ginsburg is American, E E Cummings is American, Faukner is American ... and I thought that things like Crosby, Stills and Nash are actually very American ... some truth, but mostly superficial ... still very nice and neat to listen to ... and enjoyable as all heck ... but sometimes ... empty!

Just like Good Vibrations ... Beach Boys ... nice, neat and all that ... but it is superficial. It really is ... what a lot of these people are like ... sometimes ... not all the time ... and most New York'rs will probably take exception to that ... but I can not find a song out of New York ... that speaks as loudly ... other than Born in the USA? ... and even that ... I think some of his other songs are actually more about his neighborhood, would be more of his American'ism ... than the actual song Born in the USA -- but the song made sense then, and it was a fall out from the VietNam war ...

    Hope this helps, Pedro

I'm glad some others mentioned Grand Funk. To me, they were the American rock band in the early seventies, as opposed to the Beatles, Stones, Zep, Who, Kinks, all the English acts I liked.
Steppenwolf is from Canada?! I didn't know that. Still, American. United Statesian just doesn't sound right for us.
Monster seems to encapsulate the idea of America as a place to go and be free. Then the monster of greed and corruption rises from the muck, but that doesn't stop folks from having a desire to come to America and breathe free, "far from the reaches of kingdom and pope".
    Or to make money.

...not to exclude my fellow Northern North Americans, I'm adding Neil Young.  Yeah, I always feel a certain sense of American-ness when I'm listening to him.
